The Influence of Framing and Recent Experience on Farmer Choices in Experimental Games Depicting Risk-Reducing Agricultural Technologies

Climate change is a major threat to food security, particularly in low and middle-income countries that are highly dependent on staple crops for subsistence. The vulnerability of staple crops, like maize, in the face of climate change, is increasing due to the increasing frequency of droughts. This thesis aims to evaluate two mechanisms through which farmers may be more willing to adopt new technologies that increase their resilience to climate change: First, I evaluate the effectiveness of a new virtual maize farming game as a learning tool to teach farmers about the outcomes they could obtain under different weather events when adopting new technologies, specifically drought tolerant maize seeds and satellite-based index insurance. Second, I test the effectiveness of framing messages that induce farmers to evaluate prospects not just by the individual utility they provide but also in terms of the utility they may perceive through their family and community well-being. Thus, both, the game and framing messages created for this thesis are meant to nudge farmers’ behaviors, inducing farmers to choose the new resilience-enhancing technologies. As part of a bigger research project, the game was developed and tested with a sample of maize farmers in Mozambique in the form of a framed field experiment. Local data were collected to calibrate key parameters of the simulated game. Enumerators collected sociodemographic data of farmers participating in the experiment through a survey. A subset of the sample for the survey data was randomly selected to participate in one of the three versions of the virtual game, where each version differs by the framing message to which the farmer was exposed. A paired t-test and multinomial logit models were used to test the role of experience in the game and the framing messages in changing farmers’ behavior in the short term, within the game itself. I find that experience within the virtual maize farming game produces changes in farmers’ in-game behavior. Notably, experience with simulated drought events are determinant in the learning process. Additionally, those exposed to the framing messages related to family and community domains are more likely to adopt the new technologies compared to those exposed just to the framing related to the individual domain. Moreover, the impact of the framing varies depending on farmers’ experiences with droughts in the real world as well as during the game. These results indicate that simulated experiences through games could be useful tools to introduce new technologies to small farmers. Furthermore, introducing framing messages in these games can intensify the rate of acceptance and adoption of technologies that may help farmers to be more resilient in the face of climate change. These results only show changes in farmers’ behaviors in the short term. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term impacts of this experiment

Acompañamiento psicológico a los adultos mayores de la fundación opción Colombia - FUNDACOL

TablasEn el hogar Fundacol, se encuentran acogidos y cuidados 96 adultos mayores, hombres y mujeres, distribuidos en dos sedes. Cada adulto mayor tiene sus singularidades físicas y mentales. Los rangos de edades oscilan entre 50 y 90 años de ambos sexos. Una característica especial es el abandono por parte de las familias, como también el deterioro mental cognitivo de los pacientes. El informe es una síntesis de las actividades realizadas con los adultos mayores de tal manera que se logra vislumbrar un diagnostico psicológico con elementos para el bienestar integral. El resultado son recomendaciones para los centros gerontogeriatricos, para las familias de pacientes adultos mayores. A la vez se sugieren aspectos para combatir el deterioro cognitivo y mejorar la calidad de vida de la comunidad longeva. Con un enfoque cualitativo, el informe de práctica pretende ser un sencillo manual estratégico de atención a comunidades de adulto mayor albergados en centros gerontogeriatricos. Construcción social de la subjetividad política de niños y niñas en contexto de conflicto armado: acción colectiva en la escuela como alternativa de paz

Indagar sobre la construcción social de la subjetividad política de niños y niñas en contexto de conflicto armado, exige preguntarse por los modos en los que la construcción social genera mundos nuevos con mínimos de justicia y reconocimiento, ante situaciones de extrema dificultad; y por las formas en las que la subjetividad política se instala paradójicamente en un contexto de extrema violencia. La escuela, espacio destinado a una vida moral, digna, feliz y cultivadora de capacidades, en casos de conflicto deviene lugar de maltrato y coacción. Desde esta perspectiva resulta fundamental que este espacio posibilite acciones desde la vida cotidiana, la relación con otros y otras y acuerdos simples, que permitan la emergencia de un ejercicio político: la acción colectiva como base para la construcción de paz. Los hallazgos investigativos se consolidan tomando la acción colectiva como una respuesta ante la variabilidad del mundo deseado y de las expectativas de una vida conforme a deseos de bienestar. De allí que el horizonte metodológico de esta propuesta sea la hermenéutica ontológica política, dada la necesidad de explicitar los contenidos de la experiencia individual, relacional y social. Cabe aclarar de entrada que es la lectura en clave hermenéutica la que posibilita la explicitación de los contenidos políticos de las acciones de aquellos y aquellas con los y las que se fundamentó y vivenció esta investigación

Parental Involvement between Two Different Urban Communities

Parent involvement is an integral part of a child’s educational progress. In some cases, students’ academic achievement can be directly related to the level of parental involvement exhibited in schools. Families’ perception of roles toward parental involvement in schools may vary among groups from diverse cultures. In today’s urban schools, the increasing diversity of cultures may contribute to differences in levels of parental involvement. The purpose of this research is to address the need to promote parental participation in the educational process of their children. This study will focus on three research questions: Are there differences in levels of parental involvement after participating in a program designed to assist them with their children’s reading skills? Are there changes in the attitudes of families towards parental involvement after participating in the instructional cycle? La enfermedad terminal y el proceso teoterapéutico: una mirada desde la subjetividad

Multiple research has been generated regarding the palliative care that should be taken into account when caring for a terminally ill patient, but many of these researches focus on working with the patient from a biological perspective, on pain and physical suffering that the disease can cause, but this research tries to go beyond the biological, helping the person to have a better quality of life, both socially, affective, so the purpose of this research was to describe the subjective sense that gives a patient with a terminal illness to his treatment with the teotherapy, therefore a semi-structured interview was carried out, where he took into account: The sense and the subjective configurations that the patient has in the face of his terminal illness.Múltiples investigaciones se han publicado describiendo los cuidados paliativos que se deben tener en cuenta a la hora de cuidar a un enfermo terminal; sin embargo, la mayoría de esas investigaciones se han centrado en trabajar con el paciente desde una perspectiva biológica la cual ha buscado enfocarse principalmente en el manejo del dolor y aplacamiento del sufrimiento físico que la enfermedad puede causar. El objetivo de la presente investigación, de epistemología cualitativa, profundidad descriptiva y tiempo transversal, es indagar sobre otras posibilidades de acompañamiento al enfermo terminal desde una postura más allá de lo biológico, describiendo el sentido subjetivo y las configuraciones subjetivas que le da un paciente a un proceso teoterapéutico, durante su proceso de afrontamiento de la enfermedad. Los resultados de la investigación muestran que el proceso teoterapéutico tiene un impacto positivo en el participante no solo durante el tratamiento de su enfermedad terminal, sino después de la misma ayudando a mejorar la calidad de vida del participante, tanto a nivel social como a nivel afectivo
