NERVATERRA : estratègies constructives per al traçat d’instal•lacions cablejades pel terra dels edificis

    Get PDF

Carybdea marsupialis (Cubozoa) in the Mediterranean Sea: The first case of a sting causing cutaneous and systemic manifestations

A woman stung by the box jellyfish Carybdea marsupialis (Cnidaria, Cubozoa) at a Spanish Mediterranean beach, showed systemic manifestations over several months (pain far from the inoculation point, arthralgia, paresthesia, hyperesthesia, increase of eosinophils and IgE) in addition to the skin condition. This research was carried out under contract LIFE 08 NAT ES 0064 (to CB, JMG and VF) co-financed by the European Commission (www.cubomed.eu), the Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, Fundación Biodiversidad and the Dirección General del Agua of the Regional Government of Valencia

Feasibility of 4D-Spatio Temporal Image Correlation (STIC) in the Comprehensive Assessment of the Fetal Heart Using FetalHQ®.

Fetal Heart Quantification (FetalHQ®) is a novel speckle tracking software that permits the study of global and regional ventricular shape and function from a 2D four-chamber-view loop. The 4D-Spatio Temporal Image Correlation (STIC) modality enables the offline analysis of optimized and perfectly aligned cardiac planes. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and reproducibility of 4D-STIC speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) using FetalHQ® and to compare it to 2D STE. We conducted a prospective study including 31 low-risk singleton pregnancies between 20 and 40 weeks of gestation. Four-chamber view volumes and 2D clips were acquired with an apex pointing at 45° and with a frame rate higher than 60 Hz. Morphometric and functional echocardiography was performed by FetalHQ®. Intra- and interobserver reproducibility were evaluated by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Our results showed excellent reproducibility (ICC > 0.900) for morphometric evaluation (biventricular area, longitudinal and transverse diameters). Reproducibility was also good (ICC > 0.800) for functional evaluation (biventricular strain, Fractional Area Change, left ventricle volumes, ejection fraction and cardiac output). On the contrary, the study of the sphericity index and shortening fraction of the different ventricular segments showed lower reproducibility (ICC < 0.800). To conclude, 4D-STIC is feasible, reproducible and comparable to 2D echocardiography for the assessment of cardiac morphometry and function

Scientific Opinion on application EFSA‐GMO‐BE‐2013‐117 for authorisation of genetically modified maize MON 87427 × MON 89034 × NK603 and subcombinations independently of their origin, for food and feed uses, import and processing submitted under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 by Monsanto Company

Scientific opinionRequestor: Competent Authority of BelgiumQuestion number: EFSA-Q-2013-00765In this opinion, the EFSA Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO Panel) assessed the three-event stack maize MON 87427 9 MON 89034 9 NK603 and its three subcombinations, independently of their origin. The GMO Panel has previously assessed the three single events combined to produce this three-event stack maize and did not identify safety concerns. No new data on the single events, leading to modification of the original conclusions on their safety, were identified. Based on the molecular, agronomic, phenotypic and compositional characteristics, the combination of the single maize events and of the newly expressed proteins in the three-event stack maize did not give rise to issues regarding food and feed safety or nutrition. In the case of accidental release of viable grains of maize MON 87427 9 MON 89034 9 NK603 into the environment, the three-event stack maize would not raise environmental safety concerns. The GMO Panel concludes that the threeevent stack maize is as safe and as nutritious as the non-GM comparator and the tested non-GM reference varieties in the context of its scope. The GMO Panel considered that its previous conclusions on the two-event stack maize MON 89034 9 NK603 remain valid. For the two maize subcombinations for which no experimental data were provided the GMO Panel assessed the likelihood of interactions among the single events, and concluded that their combination would not raise safety concerns. These two subcombinations are therefore expected to be as safe as the single events, the previously assessed maize MON 89034 9 NK603 and maize MON 87427 9 MON 89034 9 NK603. Since the post-market environmental monitoring plan for the three-event stack maize does not include any provisions for the two subcombinations not previously assessed, the GMO Panel recommended the applicant to revise the plan accordingly

18 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. The poisons of jellyfish and oTher dangerous marine animals. – This article reviews the dangers related to marine animal envenomations. Though the scope of the paper is mainly confined to the Mediterranean Sea, it also discusses animals of other areas often visited during the tourist season. Venomous marine animals exhibit diverse mechanisms of injury and toxicity. Information regarding the morphology, behaviour, and health hazards of these dangerous organisms, both invertebrates and vertebrates, is presented with the aim of helping medical personnel recognize, diagnose, and treat marine envenomations. The main focus is on jellyfish, but other stinging invertebrate animals, including coelenterates (hydroids, corals, and sea anemones), sponges, fireworms, echinoderms (sea urchins, starfish and sea cucumbers), and molluscs (cone shells and octopi), as well as a variety of fishes including stingrays, catfish, scorpionfish, etc., are also addressed. For each group, various first aid recommendations are also provided.Peer reviewe
