The study of male infertility has become a priority for biologists and researchers in the last decades as a consequence of the declining birth rates. This problem has also become a major public health with economic and psychosocial consequences. Analysis of human sperm cells, for instance, is widely used in investigations related to male infertility and assisted conception. Sperm samples are usually analysed by health professionals using microscope devices following a manual process to count and describe their morphology. Nevertheless, this practice is prone to errors and time consuming. This thesis proposes a novel framework based on image processing and machine learning methods to automate the analysis of sperm cells. The proposed method presented an average accuracy performance of 96.4% classify automatically sperm cells in three classes: normal, abnormal and non sperm cell. Performance results have been obtained in challenging conditions: presence of uneven illumination, unwanted noise and blurring caused by the focus drift and occlusion of objects as a result of the overlapping of sperm cells, among others. The object of interest, sperm cells, captured in the images used in this research did not receive any staining or fixation treatment prior to their capture. A novel and robust methodology based on deep neural learning is developed as part of the automatic feature selection prior to the classification. Also, video and image database of sperm samples was produced at the Andrology laboratory of the University of Sheffield as part of this work. The database was used to validate the proposed framework for the segmentation and classification of in-vitro cells

Mapping, visualization and the access to suitable data as a means to facilitate the dialogue among scientists, policy makers and the general public are among the most challenging issues within current ecosystem service science and application. Recently the attention on spatially explicit ways to map ecosystem services, at local, regional and global scale is increasing. This report presents ESTIMAP: a suite of models for a spatially explicit assessment of three ecosystem services (recreation, pollination and coastal protection) at continental scale. The main objective of the models is to support EU policies with information on ecosystem services.JRC.H.8-Sustainability Assessmen

We consider that absorptive capacity is formed by the ability to acquire, assimilate, transform and exploit the knowledge generated externally and examine the importance that each one of these dimensions has in compa- nies that adopt different strategies. The information has been obtained from a sample composed by 81 Spanish ce- ramic tiles firms. The results show that the ability to acquire knowledge is higher in prospectors than in defenders and analyzers, and that the transformation and exploitation abilities are higher in the prospector firms than in the de- fenders, whereas no differences are observed in the knowledge assimilation capacit

Identifying Polymeric Constitutive Equations for Incremental Sheet Forming Modelling

    Get PDF
AbstractRecent publications have revealed an increasing interest in forming polymer materials using Incremental Sheet Forming. Therefore, several constitutive material models are being developed in an attempt to predict the physical response of polymeric materials during the process. This paper discuss several material models that could be used to predict experimental data collected on samples of PVC and PC subjected to simple uniaxial test performed at various temperatures and testing speeds. The results have shown that the Marlow and the rule of mixture material models could be used to describe viscoelastic and softening and permanent set effects, respectively, to predict the behaviour of a part formed by Incremental Sheet Forming

Service-Learning and Community Engagement: Working en comunidad with Latina/o/x Peoples in the US

Summary: This panel explores the ethical approaches to working with Latina/o/x communities within language courses and beyond, preparing Latina/o/x students for working with their own communities in different environments, and ensuring equitable practices and building relationships that are mutually beneficial for students and community, that can be extended beyond a college course. Abstract: This panel presentation of the edited book collection, Service-Learning and Community Engagement: Working en comunidad with Latina/o/x Peoples in the US brings together different approaches on integrating a careful and ethical framework for ensuring reciprocity in working with the Latina/o/x community as one that is rooted en comunidad and warns about extractive practices that fail to address power disparities between university and partner organizations. While reciprocal relations are key to this work, we believe that building sustainable relationships, especially among minoritized communities, is most fruitful when we consider them to be a long-term commitment, not just a semester or within a semester (Manzo,et al, 2020). That is, many of the authors doing this work are also actively involved with the organization(s) they partner with, as a long-term commitment and relationship-building practice to make sure we are not being extractive in our engagement with the community. This collection employs a decolonial and intersectional approach of thinking and working with the Latina/o/x community inside and outside the classroom in a variety of institutional contexts including both public and private Hispanic Serving Institutions, Predominantly White Institutions, and Ivy League Institutions. It centers on service-learning theory and practice that acknowledge the diverse experiences and complexity of this community’s racialized identity and language, and their contributions as knowledge production. The work of the various authors in this collection provides an opportunity to broaden critical discourses around equitable education and racial justice in higher education

An online open access test (CREAX self-assessment) has been used in this work so that students from degrees in engineering in the Universidad Polite¿cnica of Madrid (UPM) could self-assess their creative competence after several classroom activities. Different groups from the first year course have been statistically compared using data from their assessment. These first year students had different professors in the subject ?Technical Drawing? and belonged to several degrees in the UPM. They were as well compared regarding sex and a group of first year students was also compared to another last year group of the degree so as to observe possible differences in the achievement of this competence. Only one difference was detected concerning sex in one of the degrees. Among degrees, the higher marks obtained by students who had done specific exercises for the development of creativity in class is highlighted. Finally, a significantly high mark was observed in students during their last year of degree with respect to first year students. The tool CREAX has become very useful in the assessment of this competence in the UPM degrees in which it has been implemented
