A cross-country evaluation of cheating in academia: is it related to âreal worldâ business ethics?
Todayâs economics and business students are expected to be our futureâs business people and potentially our tomorrowâs economic leaders and politicians. Thus, their beliefs and practices are likely to affect the definition of acceptable economics and business ethics. The empirical evaluation of the cheating phenomenon in academia has been almost exclusively focused on the US context, and the non-US studies involve, in general, a narrow scope of countries. In the present paper we perform a wide cross-country study on the determinants of economics and business undergraduate cheating which involves 21 countries from the American (4), European (14), Africa (2) and Oceania (1) Continents and 7213 students. We found that the average magnitude of copying among the economics and business undergraduates is quite high (62%) but with a significant cross-country heterogeneity. The probability of cheating is significantly lower in students enrolled in schools located in the Nordic or the US plus British Isles blocks when compared with their South Europe counterparts; quite surprisingly that probability is also lower for the African block. Distinctly, students enrolled in schools from the Western and especially from the Eastern Europe observe statistically significant higher propensities for perpetrating academic fraud. Our findings further suggest that average cheating propensity in academia is significantly correlated with âreal worldâ business corruption.cheating; corruption; university; economics; business; countries
Crime without punishment: An update review of the determinants of cheating among university students
The issue of cheating is a serious problem since it can call the efficiency of an education system into question. Furthermore, it is a devaluing factor in the country's stock of human capital. A student who copies is a free-rider, in the sense that he/she gains a higher grade than that merited by the actual amount of effort expended on study. In addition, it makes it impossible for teachers to fully achieve the goal of effective dissemination to, and acquisition of knowledge by, students. This paper conceptually and methodologically systematizes the phenomenon of academic fraud. Distinct forms of theorizing illegal behaviours are examined, adapting Beckerâs crime model (1968) to cheating. A systematic review of the literature has allowed certain direct determinants of the probability of âcopyingâ, not yet investigated, to be identified, viz: 1) the âadvantagesâ, in terms of a higher grade, that students see themselves as gaining from fraudulent behaviour in comparison with not indulging in it; 2) the breakdown of studentsâ grades by nature of discipline - âreasoningâ versus âcrammingâ; and 3) the existence or otherwise of a code of honour in universities. As a result, this paper proposes a new, âexpandedâ, econometric specification for estimating cheating (i.e., the probability of âcopyingâ) based on an analysis of the expected cost-benefit, according to Beckerâs model.crime, cheating, university, human capital
College cheating in Portugal: results from a large scale survey
The phenomenon of cheating among academics is of overwhelming importance in that the students engaging in it are most unlikely to have the skills necessary for their future professional life. Despite its relevance, the empirical evaluation of college cheating has been almost exclusively focused on the US context. Little is known about college cheating at the European level let alone Portugal. Less even in investigated at the regional level. In this paper we present evidence on cheating perception by Portuguese undergraduate students of economics and business courses. We undertake a large scale survey, involving 2675 students from all Portuguese mainland public universities. We found that (1) the likelihood of copying is increased when the expected benefit in terms of grade is positive; (2) copying-favourable environments â the high frequency with which students observe the act of copying, familiarity with someone that copies regularly, and the studentsâ opinion regarding copying â are associated with higher cheating propensity; (3) the higher and more serious students perceive sanctions, fewer incentives they have to perpetrate dishonest behaviours â in universities where âcodes of honourâ exist, the propensity for copying among students is lower; (4) the propensity for copying seems to be highly influenced by regionsâ cultural systems and social related factors - students who reside on a permanent basis in southern, inland regions, especially in Alentejo-related areas, present a significantly higher propensity to academic fraud than students from other areas of Portugal.cheating; university; cost/benefit; regions
processo.
This work, prepared between February and July 2011, aimed to analyse the impact
of the optimization strategies adopted in the management process. The studied solutions
intended to solve some operation problems in the Crestuma wastewater treatment plant
(WWTP), using the existing facilities.
For this purpose an analysis of the plant records history was performed in the period
from January 2008 to July 2011, which was considered the necessary time for analysis in
order to obtain conclusive results.
The WWTP is located in the parish of Crestuma, currently with 2619 inhabitants,
located at the confluence of the Vessadas stream with the Douro river. It is intended to treat
the wastewaters from three locations, S. Fioso, S. Picoto and S. Vessada, contributing to the
reduction of pollution of Douro river.
Generally, the treatment plant has been presenting a very satisfactory performance,
complying the limit emission values according to the current legislation (Decree-Law
152/97).
The persistence of large amounts of sludge in the process, associated with a high
sludge age, is the source of its poor settling, preventing its removal from the system. In order
to remove more efficiently the biological sludge, a two steps strategy has been adopted.
In order to improve the settleability of the sludge, in the first step a biological product,
composed mainly of fungi (Optibiom 7450L), was introduced into the process.
In order to increase the efficiency of sludge dewatering, the second stage was the
replacement of the polymer used in the sludge thickening by another of different composition
(Easy 6040).
The changes introduced led to obtain a better process control and converge to
operating parameters closer to the literature values. The most relevant changes were
observed in the values of total suspended solids (TSS) in the biological reactor and
recirculation, which correspond to average values of 3846 and 9716 mg/L, respectively
(corresponding to ancient values of 5301 and 7430 mg/L). Thus, the ratio of the
concentrations of TSS in the stream of recirculation and biological reactor increased from
1.4 to 2.6. The age of the sludge has been reduced from 42 to 36 days with the addition of
the polymer Easy 6040 and the sludge volume index showed a reduction of 134 mL/g to 100
mL/g, which improved the sludge settleability.
Thus, decrease of 33.3% was obtained in the volume of sludge produced per m3 of
treated affluent as well as a 27% reduction in the number of hours of operation of the
centrifuge and a slight decrease in the overall energy consumption of the WWTP (0.89%).
It may be concluded that the process changes introduced, addition of a biological
product containing fungi (Optibiom 7450L) and the replacement of the polymer used in the sludge thickening by another of different composition (Easy 6040), led to an improvement in
the operation of the Crestuma WWTP biological treatment
abrangidos.

This paper addresses the issue of violence against women and aims to study and
analyze the impact of violence against women in the city of AraguaĂna - TO (2014-
2015), as well as what has been done to help these victims. The methodology
includes bibliographical and documentary research. What is noticeable is that
violence against women is not new or recent, but something as old as humanity itself.
What's new is the fact that the concern with overcoming this violence as a necessary
condition for the construction of human dignity. The result of this research shows that
notification in the State of Tocantins and AraguaĂna city is something still early, but
the distribution of the notifications, according to the available data show that
awareness and coordination with the agencies should begin to have an effect on
latest statistics. This study deals with a literature search of nature and descriptive. In
conclusion, from the surveyed literature is believed that the discussion of this topic
enables the understanding of the factors that trigger acts of violence, and the
identification of support mechanisms.
A metodologia
dignidade humana.
liberdades e garantias, nomeadamente a proteção do direito Ă privacidade.
conduzindo, nĂŁo raras vezes, a provas obtidas ilegalmente.
The evolution of technology brought lots of benefits, facilitating life in society in
the most diverse aspects. However, that evolution was transverse to other diferent fields,
including the criminological phenomenon, which saw in Internet an open gate to commit
crimes anda illicit operations without being detected. In an unequal struggle polices also
they appeal to technology to fight cyber crime. But they are confronted with a law that it
isnât totally prepared to this new reality and whose scope is the protection of rights,
freedoms and garantes, in particularly the protection of right to privacy. The aid requested
by the Public Prosecutorâs Office in the criminal investigation and in the collection of
evidence is often confined by a limitation of policie action particularly with regard to
obtaining evidence. Under these restrictions, the line between the permitted means of proof
and the prohibited means of proof becomes very tenuous leading to evidence obtained
illegally. This problema is specifically related to the means of obtaining evidence in the
digital environment and its volatility.N/

Day after day, the streets of Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel - Azores, are frequented by young teenagers who dropped out of school or feel unmotivated, uninterested in attending school and entered the scenes of crime, drugs and prostitution. However, these are not the so-called "youth on the street," since most of them are living with their biological families. They seek on the streets all that was ÂŽrobbedâ from their childhood: family, affection, respect and adventure ... because the street is a place where they are able to be in charge and rule by laws which are defined by them.
In a thesis in which young people in the streets are the main characters, which motivate all of the technicians work, we intended to enter their world, following their trail and their life stories and recover their voices, as well as the technicians, to characterize this way of living. Through semi-structured interviews with the young people living on the streets, of both sexes, aged between 14 and 18 years, it was possible to understand the reasons why young people in the streets choose this location and this lifestyle, as well as, the relationship they have with it and their families. On the other hand, in taking the testimony of the technicians of the valence of Street

The technological advances that we have witnessed in recent decades have brought significant changes to life in society, implying an adaptation and reconfiguration, not only of norms but also of behaviors, to a reality that until then was unknown and that seemed far away. Science fiction where technologies were used to facilitate the user's life has become part of the reality of today's society.
The need to densify the norm due to the changes that have occurred, mainly in the digital environment, arose from the concerns that arose with this phenomenon since, often, the use of that cybernetic space leads to an intrusion on fundamental rights, namely in those rights whose intrusion it is inadmissible.
On the one hand, the digital environment and its navigation allow the individual a freedom that in the physical world is limited by norms and rules of conduct essential to living in society but which entails risks and threats inherent in this free navigation. On the other hand, the digital environment is devoid of rules that regulate such navigation, which provides a free exploration without prejudice of a criminal nature. Based on this darker and illicit side of the Internet, the police tend to work towards mitigating these increasingly evolved phenomena of the use of technology to commit crimes. However, and not infrequently, this investigative work leads to interference in family and private life, and may even interfere in that most private nucleus of the individual's life, the most restricted area that concerns each one, intimacy or privacy.
The present study will therefore address several fields to which criminal investigation has access and which, given the need to discover evidence that incriminates the perpetrators of crimes, can invade and jeopardize some of the most personal and inviolable rights, such as the right to privacy and to private life
Plant-parasitic nematodes associated with vegetables in Northern Minas Gerais, Brazil / Fitonematoides associados a hortaliças no Norte de Minas Gerais, Brasil
Plant-parasitic nematodes are frequently associated with vegetables causing yield losses. There is little information on the occurrence of these pathogens in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The objective of this work was to identify plant-parasitic nematodes associated with vegetable crops, focusing on the detection of Meloidogyne spp. in commercial production areas located in the municipality of Montes Claros, Northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Soil and roots samples were collected from 15 farms including 19 vegetable crops. Nematodes were extracted from soil and identified to genus level, and the roots were assessed for gall index. In soil samples, the genera Meloidogyne spp., Helicotylenchus spp., Rotylenchulus spp., Criconemoides spp., Pratylenchus spp. and Tylenchus spp. were observed in a percentage of 46.1; 31.8; 11.8; 7.4; 6.4 and 3.6%, respectively. The average gall index in vegetable crops were: squash (4.5), lettuce (2.2), eggplant (9.3), beetroot (2.4), broccoli (1.9), carrot (0.3), coriander (2.6), cabagge (0.3), cauliflower (1.2), spinach (2.0), beans (2.8), scarlet eggplant (3.3), gherkin (1.9), cucumber (3.0), pepper (3.3), okra (2.3), arugula (0.7), parsley (3.7) and tomato (3.3)
