    Lesson Study and Service Learning in Teacher Preparation

    The aim of this paper is to share an teacher preparation experience that combines Lesson Study (LS) with a Service Learning methodology. This experience is interdisciplinary and includes three subjects from first-grade Childhood Education, carried out at University of Malaga since academic year 2014-2015. Within this framework, our students carry out Service Learning projects for schools in our area that are designed and developed following the LS methodology. Service Learning projects go through the following phases (Puig, J., Martín, & Batlle, 2008): 1) Preparation by the teachers involved in the project; 2) Implementation, i.e. developing the project with the students; 3) Evaluation. The implementation phase also has three sub-phases: preparation, implementation, and round-up. It is here that the LS is developed through the following phases (Soto & Pérez, 2015): 1. Define the problem; 2. Co-operatively design an experimental lesson and its observation process; 3. First experimental lesson; 4. Analyse and review the lesson; 5. Second experimental lesson; 6. Analysis and drafting of conclusions; 7. Presentation in extended context. We were able to gather evidence on how students teachers resolved different cognitive conflicts during the process. We saw how the LS process, with its phases and cooperative work, allows them to combine creativity and unique talents in a common project that acquires meaning and relevance thanks to Service Learning. This provides a framework that facilitates the construction of solid structures related to the meaning of the educational process, and which can be used to recalibrate what it means to be a Childhood School teacher: a creative, relevant, complex experience that requires recreating the knowledge and experience that students bring with them to the University about what it means to be a Childhood School teacher.Universidad de Málaga.     THE PEOPLE OF PUERTO RICO VERSUS RICARDO ROSSELLÓ: A CASE STUDY IN POPULAR POLITICS

    On July 11, 2019, the Puerto Rico Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) published 889 pages of a private text chat between Governor Ricardo Rosselló and his closest allies. The leaked text interactions included inappropriate discussions about confidential government and policy matters. Racist, sexist, xenophobic, bullying, derogatory and potentially illegal behavior were exposed. In reaction to this, angry protests spontaneously arose against the governor. The anger was transformed into collective action and then into a social movement. After two weeks of cyber-activism and street protests, for the first time in Puerto Rico’s history, a sitting governor resigned before his term expired. This thesis analyzes the factors that caused the “Summer of 2019,” its international context, Governor Rosselló’s leadership style as he faced a devastating political scandal, and the critical role of investigative journalism and social media in fueling a social movement. To accomplish these goals, this paper does an in-depth study of the events that marked the month of July 2019 in Puerto Rico as a social and political phenomenon. A significant shift has occurred in how Puerto Ricans relate to politics, access political power, and make their voices be heard. The “Summer of 2019” proved that public and media pressure is enough to unseat a governor. Additionally, it demonstrated that investigative journalism, combined with social media, can effectively educate, galvanize, and mobilize the public

    Anesthesia Options and the Recurrence of Cancer: What We Know so Far?

    Surgery is a critical period in the survival of patients with cancer. While resective surgery of primary tumors has shown to prolong the life of these patients, it can also promote mechanisms associated with metastatic progression. During surgery, patients require general and sometimes local anesthetics that also modulate mechanisms that can favor or reduce metastasis. In this narrative review, we summarized the evidence about the impact of local, regional and general anesthesia on metastatic mechanisms and the survival of patients. The available evidence suggests that cancer recurrence is not significantly impacted by neither regional anesthesia nor volatile or total intravenous anesthesia

    Estado periodontal y microbiota subgingival en mujeres preeclámpticas.

    Objetivos: Describir el estado periodontal y la microbiota subgingival de mujeres gestantes con diagnostico de preeclampsia en el Hospital Universitario del Valle (HUV) de Cali-Colombia. Metodología: Participaron 81 mujeres con diagnóstico de preeclampsia, internadas en el Hospital Universitario del Valle, a quienes se les colectaron datos médicos y periodontales tales como profundidad al sondeo, nivel de inserción clínica, índice gingival y periodontal, con el fin de realizar el diagnóstico clínico periodontal teniendo en cuenta los parámetros de la Academia Americana de Periodoncia (AAP 1999); además se tomaron muestras microbiológicas subgingivales para cultivo e identificación de bacterias periodontopatógenas. Resultados: El 63 de la gestantes presentó preeclampsia leve y el 27.2 preeclampsia severa. Un 91.4 (n=74) de las pacientes presentó afección en el estado de salud periodontal dentro del cual el 59.3 (n=48) presentó un diagnóstico de periodontitis crónica y solo el 8.6 de las gestantes presentó un buen estado de salud periodontal. Los microorganismos periodontopáticos más frecuentes en las mujeres con preeclampsia fueron Fusobacterium ssp 80.2 (n=65), Porphyromonas gingivalis 59.3 (n = 48) y Prevotella intermedian/nigrescens 51.9 (n=42). Conclusiones: Se encontró que una alta proporción de las mujeres con preeclampsia tuvo afección en el estado periodontal con predominio de un diagnostico clínico de periodontitis crónica y presencia de una microbiota periodontopática. Solo un bajo porcentaje de las gestantes presentaron un estado de salud periodontal

    Epitaxial InN/InGaN quantum dots on Si: Cl- anion selectivity and pseudocapacitor behavior

    Epitaxial InN quantum dots (QDs) on In-rich InGaN, applied as an electrochemical electrode, activate Cl−-anion-selective surface attachment, bringing forth faradaic/pseudocapacitor-like behavior. In contrast to traditional pseudocapacitance, here, no chemical reaction of the electrode material occurs. The anion attachment is explained by the unique combination of the surface and quantum properties of the InN QDs. A high areal capacitance is obtained for this planar electrode together with rapid and reversible charge/discharge cycles. With the growth on cheap Si substrates, the InN/InGaN QD electrochemical electrode has great potential, opening up new application fields for III–nitride semiconductors

    Scalable Query Answering Under Uncertainty to Neuroscientific Ontological Knowledge: The NeuroLang Approach

    Researchers in neuroscience have a growing number of datasets available to study the brain, which is made possible by recent technological advances. Given the extent to which the brain has been studied, there is also available ontological knowledge encoding the current state of the art regarding its different areas, activation patterns, keywords associated with studies, etc. Furthermore, there is inherent uncertainty associated with brain scans arising from the mapping between voxels—3D pixels—and actual points in different individual brains. Unfortunately, there is currently no unifying framework for accessing such collections of rich heterogeneous data under uncertainty, making it necessary for researchers to rely on ad hoc tools. In particular, one major weakness of current tools that attempt to address this task is that only very limited propositional query languages have been developed. In this paper we present NeuroLang, a probabilistic language based on first-order logic with existential rules, probabilistic uncertainty, ontologies integration under the open world assumption, and built-in mechanisms to guarantee tractable query answering over very large datasets. NeuroLang’s primary objective is to provide a unified framework to seamlessly integrate heterogeneous data, such as ontologies, and map fine-grained cognitive domains to brain regions through a set of formal criteria, promoting shareable and highly reproducible research.     Effect of exogenous xylanase on rumen in vitro gas production and degradability of wheat straw

    In Mongolia, the low and seasonal yield of native pastures causes a feed gap between the annual pasture provision and the requirements of grazing ruminants. Therefore, there is a growing need to improve the feeding value of locally available resources such as wheat straw for supplementary feeding. Wheat straw constitutes an important source of roughage for ruminants. It typically contain more than 70% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) on a dry matter (DM) basis, with less than 40% total digestive tract digestibility of the NDF, even under ideal feeding conditions (NRC 2001).The objective of this study was to determine effects of xylanase on in vitro gas production (GP) and in sacco degradability of wheat straw. Rumen fluid was obtained from three Mongolian native goats fitted with permanent rumen cannulas. The trial consisted of five doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 μL/g of substrate) of a commercial xylanase (Dyadic® xylanase PLUS, Dyadic International, Inc., Jupiter, FL, USA). For the in sacco degradability, different levels of xylanase enzyme were added directly onto 2 g of wheat straw in nylon bags and incubated in the rumen for 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h to estimate degradability of wheat straw. Total GP increased (P < 0.001) at all times of incubation at intermediate levels of xylanase. Methane production had a similar pattern at 3 and 12 h of incubation; increased linearly at 24 h of incubation, and was unaffected at 6 and 48 h of incubation. Rumen NH3-N concentration increased linearly at 3 h and the highest values were observed with intermediate enzyme levels. All ruminal volatile fatty acids increased linearly with intermediate levels of the fibrolytic enzyme. The in sacco rate of dry matter degradation decreased linearly (P = 0.020) with increasing enzymes. Intermediate levels of xylanase improved rumen kinetic fermentation and degradability.     Effect of polyethylene glycol on in vitro gas production kinetics of Prosopis cineraria leaves at different growth stages

    The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on in vitro gas production (GP) kinetics of Prosopis cineraria leaves at different growth stages. The contents of total phenol (TPH), total tannin (TT) and condensed tannin (CT) were determined. Effects on in vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD), metabolisable energy (ME) and effective dry matter digestibility were assessed by PEG tannin bioassay. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed for TPH content; however, the stage of flowering had the highest (P0.05) were observed between the growth stage and PEG addition for in vitro GP and its parameters. Addition of PEG increased (P<0.05) GP, OMD and ME in all stages. In conclusion, adding PEG to P. cineraria leaves can improve their nutritive value and could be considered as a potential feed for ruminants

    Eutrophication and macroalgal blooms in temperate and tropical coastal waters: Nutrient enrichment experiments with Ulva spp.

    Receiving coastal waters and estuaries are among the most nutrient-enriched environments on earth, and one of the symptoms of the resulting eutrophication is the proliferation of opportunistic, fast-growing marine seaweeds. Here, we used a widespread macroalga often involved in blooms, Ulva spp., to investigate how supply of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), the two main potential growth-limiting nutrients, influence macroalgal growth in temperate and tropical coastal waters ranging from low- to high-nutrient supplies. We carried out N and P enrichment field experiments on Ulva spp. in seven coastal systems, with one of these systems represented by three different subestuaries, for a total of nine sites. We showed that rate of growth of Ulva spp. was directly correlated to annual dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations, where growth increased with increasing DIN concentration. Internal N pools of macroalgal fronds were also linked to increased DIN supply, and algal growth rates were tightly coupled to these internal N pools. The increases in DIN appeared to be related to greater inputs of wastewater to these coastal waters as indicated by high δ15N signatures of the algae as DIN increased. N and P enrichment experiments showed that rate of macroalgal growth was controlled by supply of DIN where ambient DIN concentrations were low, and by P where DIN concentrations were higher, regardless of latitude or geographic setting. These results suggest that understanding the basis for macroalgal blooms, and management of these harmful phenomena, will require information as to nutrient sources, and actions to reduce supply of N and P in coastal waters concerned.Fil: Teichberg, Mirta.     Oligodendrogenesis in iron-deficient rats: Effect of apotransferrin

    In rats, iron deficiency produces an alteration in myelinformation. However, there is limited information on theeffects of this condition on oligodendroglial cell (OLGc)proliferation and maturation. In the present study, wefurther analyzed the hypomyelination associated withiron deficiency by studying the dynamics of oligodendrogenesis.Rats were fed control (40 mg Fe/kg) oriron-deficient (4 mg Fe/kg) diets from gestation day 5until postnatal day 3 (P3) or 11 (P11). OLGc proliferation,migration and differentiation were investigatedbefore and after an intracranial injection of apotransferrinat 3 days of age (P3). The proliferating cell populationwas evaluated at P3. Iron-deficient (ID) animalsshowed an increase in the oligodendrocyte precursorscell (OPC) population in comparison with controls. Theoverall pattern of migration of cells labeled with BrdUwas investigated at P11. Iron deficiency increased theamount of BrdU1 cells in the corpus callosum (CC) anddecreased OLGc maturation and myelin formation.Changes in nerve conduction were analyzed by measuringvisual evoked potentials. Latency and amplitudewere significantly disturbed in ID rats compared withcontrols. Both parameters were substantially normalizedwhen animals were treated with a single intracranialinjection of 350 ng apotransferrin (aTf). The currentresults give support to the idea that iron deficiencyincreases the number of proliferating and undifferentiatedcells in the CC compared with the control. Treatmentwith aTf almost completely reverted the effects ofiron deficiency, both changing the migration patternand increasing the number of mature cells in the CCand myelin formation.Fil: Rosato Siri, María Victoria.
