    Advanced MR Imaging Techniques in the Diagnosis of Intraaxial Brain Tumors

    Intracranial masses are a significant health problem and present several imaging challenges. The role of imaging is no longer limited to merely providing anatomic details but the advanced MR techniques permit the assessment of the freedom of water molecule movement, the microvascular structure and hemodynamic characteristics, and the chemical makeup of certain metabolites of lesions. In the current chapter, we will discuss the role of the advanced MR imaging techniques, namely perfusion, diffusion‐weighted imaging, and MR spectroscopy in the diagnosis and classification of the most frequent brain tumors in adults. We provide a brief description of the advanced MR techniques that are currently used, and we discuss in detail the imaging findings for each lesion. These lesions include gliomas both high and low grade, metastatic lesions, lymphomas, and lesions that may mimic tumors such as tumefactive demyelinating lesions, abscesses, and encephalitis. Our goal is to summarize the diagnostic information that advanced MR imaging techniques offer for establishing a diagnosis and clinical decision making

    Non-polypoidal, synchronous mantle- cell lymphoma of small intestine: a rare case

    Herein is reported the case of a mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) with synchronous double intestinal location. A 74 - year old male presented with mild abdominal pain. CT scan imaging indicated invasion of lateral intestinal cavity by large mass formation. Exploratory laparotomy was performed and two solid extra-mural masses were isolated and excised. Histology revealed non- polypoid double synchronous lymphoma of mantle cell origin, an unusual presentation of the disease

    Isatin thiosemicarbazone-blended polymer films for biomedical applications : surface morphology, characterisation and preliminary biological assessment

    Poly (methyl methacrylate) and polyurethane are polymers currently used for a range of biomedical applications. To modify their surface characteristics, biocompatibility and potentially reduce any related side effects the addition to the polymers of appropriate compounds has been investigated. Isatin thiosemicarbazone derivatives were synthesised and added to poly (methyl methacrylate) and polyurethane solutions before spin coating them on to a silica wafer. The resultant films were characterised with contact angle goniometry and atomic force microscopy. PMMA films produced from tetrahydrofuran solvent displayed honeycombed structures which were highly hydrophobic; however, such changes were not seen for polyurethane surfaces. The cytotoxicity and effect on cell proliferation of polymer surfaces were investigated using PNT2A prostate cells. The isatin-containing polymers were deemed non-toxic at the concentrations used, while cell proliferation studies suggested that the resulting films were supportive of cell growth

    Characterization of Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina) PsMYB10 Alleles Reveals Structural Variation and Polymorphisms Correlating With Fruit Skin Color

    The red to blue hue of plant organs is caused due to anthocyanins, which are water-soluble flavonoid pigments. The accumulation of these pigments is regulated by a complex of R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs), basic-helix-loop-helix (bHLH), and WD-repeat (WDR) proteins (MBW complex). In Rosaceae species, R2R3-MYBs, particularly MYB10 genes, are responsible for part of the natural variation in anthocyanin colors. Japanese plum cultivars, which are hybrids of Prunus salicina, have high variability in the color hue and pattern, going from yellow-green to red and purple-blue, probably as a result of the interspecific hybridization origin of the crop. Because of such variability, Japanese plum can be considered as an excellent model to study the color determination in Rosaceae fruit tree species. Here, we cloned and characterized the alleles of the PsMYB10 genes in the linkage group LG3 region where quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the organ color have been mapped to other Prunus species. Allele segregation in biparental populations as well as in a panel of varieties, combined with the whole-genome sequence of two varieties with contrasting fruit color, allowed the organization of the MYB10 alleles into haplotypes. With the help of this strategy, alleles were assigned to genes and at least three copies of PsMYB10.1 were identified in some varieties. In total, we observed six haplotypes, which were able to characterize 91.36% of the cultivars. In addition, two alleles of PsMYB10.1 were found to be highly associated with anthocyanin and anthocyanin-less skin. Their expression during the fruit development confirms their role in the fruit skin coloration.     Swimming as physical activity and recreation for women

    The present study reviews all data that establish swimming as an everyday lifestyle and recreational activity for women, since it promotes wellness, well-being and longevity. Swimming as a natural, physical activity is one of the most effective ways of exercise, since it affects and work outs the whole body. It is the most suitable sport for all age groups, because it combines beneficial results, for both body and soul and is also a low-risk-injury physical exercise. Aim of this study is to record the effect of recreational swimming in physical condition indexes and in quality of life in women. In particular to record the benefits, since studies have shown that swimming can help in prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and improves quality of life, of well-being and longevity. Results of all studies showed that swimming, as a great natural recreational activity has multiple beneficial effects on the female body that are not limited to the physical characteristics but are extended to the mental ones. Challenges for the application and development fields of this particular method of exercise, are the quality of service provided and the staffing of departments and programs in multiple carriers, private or public. Researchers and writers agree that there are great prospects for growth for women through partnerships, with programs and systematic research in the field of recreational swimming

    CATSNAP : a user-friendly algorithm for determining the conservation of protein variants reveals extensive parallelisms in the evolution of alternative splicing

    Understanding the evolutionary conservation of complex eukaryotic transcriptomes significantly illuminates the physiological relevance of alternative splicing (AS). Examining the evolutionary depth of a given AS event with ordinary homology searches is generally challenging and time-consuming. Here, we present CATSNAP, an algorithmic pipeline for assessing the conservation of putative protein isoforms generated by AS. It employs a machine learning approach following a database search with the provided pair of protein sequences. We used the CATSNAP algorithm for analyzing the conservation of emerging experimentally characterized alternative proteins from plants and animals. Indeed, most of them are conserved among other species. CATSNAP can detect the conserved functional protein isoforms regardless of the AS type by which they are generated. Notably, we found that while the primary amino acid sequence is maintained, the type of AS determining the inclusion or exclusion of protein regions varies throughout plant phylogenetic lineages in these proteins. We also document that this phenomenon is less seen among animals. In sum, our algorithm highlights the presence of unexpectedly frequent hotspots where protein isoforms recurrently arise to carry physiologically relevant functions.     Application and testing of the extended-Kalman-filtering technique for determining the planetary boundary-layer height over Athens, Greece

    The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10546-020-00514-zWe investigate the temporal evolution of the planetary boundary-layer (PBL) height over the basin of Athens, Greece, during a 6-year period (2011–2016), using data from a Raman lidar system. The range-corrected lidar signals are selected around local noon (1200 UTC) and midnight (0000 UTC), for a total of 332 cases: 165 days and 167 nights. In this dataset, the extended-Kalman filtering technique is applied and tested for the determination of the PBL height. Several well-established techniques for the PBL height estimation based on lidar data are also tested for a total of 35 cases. The lidar-derived PBL heights are compared to those derived from radiosonde data.
