    Reconstructing an Ascendancy world: the material culture of Frederick Hervey, the Earl Bishop of Derry (1730-1803)

    This thesis seeks to examine how the Ascendancy fashioned their world in eighteenth-century Ireland, through a case study of Frederick Hervey, bishop of Derry and fourth earl of Bristol (1730-1803). It is primarily concerned with reconstructing and re-evaluating Hervey’s material world, in order to explore his complex relationship with it. He built, successively, two great houses in county Londonderry, Downhill and Ballyscullion, and one on his inherited lands in Suffolk, Ickworth House, placing them within a landscape setting and filling them with rare artworks. The changing intentions and career trajectory of this intriguing and multi-faceted figure are investigated by recovering the different functions of his three houses and by analysing his stylistic choices. Hervey’s campaign of consumption in Ireland will be placed within the wider British and European contexts, through reviewing the migration of objects, ideas and skilled practitioners to the houses and through assessing Hervey’s sense of national identity. Contemporary visitor responses are collated and analysed in order to consider the inter-related issues of how meaning is expressed and received though display. The purpose of the present chapter is to locate this study within existing literature, establish the merits of the methodology, survey the sources consulted and outline the content of subsequent chapters

    Trifocal Relative Pose from Lines at Points and its Efficient Solution

    We present a new minimal problem for relative pose estimation mixing point features with lines incident at points observed in three views and its efficient homotopy continuation solver. We demonstrate the generality of the approach by analyzing and solving an additional problem with mixed point and line correspondences in three views. The minimal problems include correspondences of (i) three points and one line and (ii) three points and two lines through two of the points which is reported and analyzed here for the first time. These are difficult to solve, as they have 216 and - as shown here - 312 solutions, but cover important practical situations when line and point features appear together, e.g., in urban scenes or when observing curves. We demonstrate that even such difficult problems can be solved robustly using a suitable homotopy continuation technique and we provide an implementation optimized for minimal problems that can be integrated into engineering applications. Our simulated and real experiments demonstrate our solvers in the camera geometry computation task in structure from motion.     The curriculum question in doctoral education

    The landscape of doctoral education has changed immensely during the last decades. Different transnational policies, different publics, different purposes and different academic careers all contribute to the need for a new understanding of this under-researched field. Our focus is on explicit curriculum analysis to undertake intentional and meaningful change, especially in terms of the processes and outcomes of doctoral education. We draw on research on doctoral education, as well as the emerging literature on early career researchers (ECRs) and on professional learning, and consider how the concept of curriculum can help us think differently about doctoral education, particularly in relation to processes and outcomes. Finally, we suggest a research agenda for developing the curricula of doctoral education.Peer reviewe

    Suicide methods in Europe: a gender-specific analysis of countries participating in the "European Alliance Against Depression"

    Objective: To identify the most frequent gener-specific suicide methods in Europe. Design: Proportions of seven predominant suicide methods utilised in 16 countries participating in the European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD)were reported in total and cross-nationally. Relative risk (RR)relating to suicide methods and gender was calculated. To group countries by pattern of suicide methods, hierarchical clustering was applied. Setting and participants: Data on suicide methods for 119 122 male and 41 338 female cases in 2000-4/5 from 16 EAAD countries, covering 52% of European population were obtained. Results: Hanging was the most prevalent suicide method among both males (54.3%) and females (35.6%). For males, hanging was followed by firearms (9.7%) and poisoning by drugs (8.6%); for females, by poisoning by drugs (24.7%)and jumping from a high place (14.5%). Only in Switzerland did hanging rank as second for males after firearms. Hanging ranked first among females in eight countries, poisoning by drugs in five and jumping from a high place in three. In all countries, males had a higher risk than females of using firearms and hanging and a lower risk of poisoning by drugs, drowning and jumping. Grouping showed that countries might be divided into five main groups among males; for females, grouping did not yield clear results. Conclusions: Research on suicide methods could lead to the development of gender-specific intervention strategies. Nevertheless, other approaches, such as better identification and treatment of mental disorders and the improvement of toxicological aid should be put in place

    Anti-Pneumocystis carinii and antiplasmodial activities of primaquine-derived imidazolidin-4-ones

    A series of primaquine-derived imidazolidin-4-ones were screened for their in vitro activity against Pneumocystis carinii and Plasmodium falciparum W2 strain. Most compounds were active against P. carinii above 10 mu g/mL and displayed slight to marked activity. The imidazolidin-4-ones most active against P. carinii were also those most active antiplasmodial agents, in the mu M range. One of the tested imidazolidin-4-ones was slightly more active than the parent primaquine and may represent a lead compound for the development of novel anti-P. carinii 8-aminoquinolines with increased stability and resistance to metabolic inactivation

    Effectiveness of Depression–Suicidal Behaviour Gatekeeper Training among police officers in three European regions: Outcomes of the Optimising Suicide Prevention Programmes and Their Implementation in Europe (OSPI-Europe) study

    Background: Gatekeeper training for community facilitators, to identify and respond to those at risk of suicide, forms an important part of multi-level community-based suicide prevention programmes.    Aims:  This study examined the effects of gatekeeper training on attitudes, knowledge and confidence of police officers in dealing with persons at risk of suicide.    Methods:  A total of 828 police officers across three European regions participated in a 4-hour training programme which addressed the epidemiology of depression and suicidal behaviour, symptoms of depression, warning signs and risk factors associated with suicidal behaviour, motivating help-seeking behaviour, dealing with acute suicidal crisis and informing bereaved relatives. Participants completed internationally validated questionnaires assessing stigmatising attitudes, knowledge about depression and confidence in dealing with suicidal persons pre- and posttraining. Results: There were significant differences among countries in terms of previous exposure to suicidal persons and extent of previous training. Post-training evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in stigmatising attitudes, knowledge and confidence in all three countries. Conclusion: The consistently positive effects of gatekeeper training of police officers across different regions support inclusion of this type of training as a fundamental part of multi-level community-based suicide prevention programmes and roll-out, nationally and internationally

    Anti-pneumoscystis carinni activitiy of primaquine imidazolidin-4-ones

    Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is one of the most frequent causes of mortality among HIV-infected patients. Primaquine (PQ) is an antimalarial 8-aminoquinoline effective against PCP when given in combination with clindamycin. This has drawn the attention of Medicinal Chemists towards the anti-PCP activity of 8-aminoquinolines, not only confined to those exhibiting antimalarial activity [1]. It is thought that anti-PCP 8-aminoquinolines exert their anti-PCP activity by acting on the electronic transport and redox system of the P. carinii pathogen [1]. Recently, our research group has been developing imidazolidin-4-one derivatives of PQ (Scheme 1), targeting novel compounds with improved therapeutic action, namely, higher resistance to metabolic inactivation, lower toxicity and equal or higher antimalarial activity than that of the parent drug [2,3]. These imidazolidin-4-ones were seen to block the transmission of rodent malaria, caused by Plasmodium berghei on BalbC mice, to the mosquito vector Anopheles stephensi [3]. The anti-PCP activity of our PQ derivatives is now under study and preliminary in vitro assays [4] show that some of the compounds exhibit slight to moderate activity after a 72 h incubation period against P. carinii. In one case, the IC50 was comparable to that of parent PQ. Both these studies and forthcoming results from ongoing biological assays will be presented and discussed

    Chloroquine Analogues as Leads against Pneumocystis Lung Pathogens

    The impact of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) on morbidity and mortality remains substantial for immunocompromised individuals, including those afflicted by HIV infection, organ transplantation, cancer, autoimmune diseases, or subject to chemotherapy or corticosteroid-based therapies. Previous work from our group has shown that repurposing antimalarial compounds for PcP holds promise for treatment of this opportunistic infection.
