Women’s NutriBusiness Cooperatives in Kenya: An Integrated Strategy for Sustaining Rural Livelihoods

With funding provided by the Center for Higher Education of the United States Agency for International Development, The Pennsylvania State University and Tuskegee University collaborated with the University of Nairobi in establishing women’s NutriBusiness Cooperatives in the Rift Valley and Central Provinces of Kenya. Between 1992 and 1999, the cooperatives were established, facilities and equipment were supplied and extensive participatory training was provided by university-affiliated investigators and project staff. This initiative enabled approximately 2500 rural Kenyan women farmers to add value to their crops by processing and locally marketing nutritious, convenient, culturally-appropriate weaning food mixes. Implementation of the NutriBusiness model is described and challenges of cultural engagement are highlighted

Kimilsungismus unter zwei Führern

Kimilsungismus ist jene ziemlich einmalige Spezies von Politik, die das System der Koreanischen Demokratischen Volksrepublik (KDVR) charakterisiert. Der Begriff führt auf den Begründer Kim Il Sung zurück; er kennzeichnet fortgesetzt auch das Regime unter dem Nachfolger Kim Jong Il. Die KDVR ist ein politischer Mikrokosmos, dessen autokratische Staatsmacht und nationalistisch-sozialistisches System sich erheblich von normaler Staatlichkeit unterscheiden. Das Abweichende veranlasst eine Vielfalt vergleichender Benennungen, etwa spätstalinistisch oder steinzeitkommunistisch, womit die repressiven und undemokratischen Zustände augenfällig werden, das Regime aber noch nicht erklärt ist. Daher werden nachfolgend die Charakteristika des Machtsystems, seine Leitideen, die Führerordnung und der Militarismus sowie die Eigenheiten der zwei "Führer" behandelt. Zur Wahrnehmung Nordkoreas sei bemerkt, dass Deutschland diplomatische Beziehungen mit der KDVR unterhält, also ein völkerrechtliches Verhältnis eingegangen ist, in dem man gegenseitig Souveränität und Integrität respektiert. Daneben ist zwischen den zwei koreanischen Staaten häufiger davon die Rede, dass wechselseitige Normalität eine Anerkennung der Systeme bedeute. Was jedoch nach den Grundsätzen internationaler Beziehungen wie in der Realität keineswegs zutrifft, da der Widerstreit um ein politisches System stets offen und eine Meinungsfrage ist

The primacy of trust in the social networks and livelihoods of women agro-entrepreneurs in Northern Tanzania

This paper describes the primacy of trust in the social networks and livelihoods of rural Tanzanian women engaged in agro-entrepreneurial activity. The importance of trust emerged from a study of the “who you know” social and economic network knowledge systems of these enterprising women in Moshi, Tanzania and the role cell phones play within their networks. The nature of the women’s agricultural businessesand their perceptions of the characteristics of women business leaders and cooperative group members were also studied. The objective of the study was to identify opportunities for developing innovative cellphone-based applications that link smallscale farmers and other entrepreneurs to markets, thus enabling these entrepreneurs to utilize, strengthen and expand their social and economic networks. A complementary goal was to identify the characteristics of women who are likely to successfully champion new entrepreneurial ventures. Three data collection techniques were employed: (1) a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) survey, (2) structured interviews; and (3) focus group interviews. There were 26 women participants in this network study - all living in multi-ethnic areas in, or near, the town of Moshi. Each participant was the proprietor of a stall selling agricultural products in one of the three town markets. A total of 92 relationships were described by these 26 women. The majority of the women primarily used cell phones in their business communication andconsidered cell phones crucial to their businesses. The women valued long-term relationships with over 70% of the business relationships described by the women having lasted for more than one year. The study revealed that these relationships were based very strongly on trust and respect. This primacy of trust in these networks was further validated by the individual interviews and focus group discussions. Loyalty and the maintenance of inter-personal relationships are more important than price in these women’s business-related decision-making. The findings suggest the importance of building trust while expanding “who you know” networks to create social and economic capital in rural African communities. The pervasiveness and importance of cell phones in these communities raises the possibility of employing this technology to create value by harnessing social capital and expanding social networks. An entrepreneurial venture called WishVast emerged from this study and is described in this paper. WishVast is a cellphone-based system that allows individuals to interact within an expanded, geographically dispersed social network – and as aresult, it enables traditionally isolated individuals to connect, communicate and coordinate with a large number of potential clients

Der Start des "volksdemokratischen" Projekts in Nordkorea

Im August 1945 besetzte die Sowjetarmee Nordkorea. Es war für alle Koreaner ein Unglück, dass Korea eine Kolonie der kapitulierenden Japaner gewesen war; nun erhofften sie nationale Selbstbestimmung. Die neue Übermacht im Norden jedoch bescherte stattdessen eine revolutionäre Umwälzung nach sowjetischem Ermessen, geeignete Macher brachte sie gleich mit. Nordkorea geriet in die Marschrichtung zum sozialistischen System, in eine Zukunft absoluter Konfrontation zum System Südkoreas. Im Eiltempo wurde 1946 eine "volksdemokratische" Umwälzung vollzogen, 1948 die KDVR als Gegenstaat begründet und danach das Land in den Koreakrieg von 1950 geführt

Das Dilemma der zwei Korea

Korea ist noch immer gespalten und es herrscht der alte Unfriede, der lokale kalte Krieg aus der Zweiteilung der Nation in zwei gegnerische Systeme setzt sich fort. In den Grunderscheinungen gleicht vieles der früheren "deutschen Frage". Das gilt für den fremden, sowjetischen Ursprung der Trennung des Volkes in zwei Staaten und ebenso für die Verselbständigung ihrer Konfrontation mit der Dauer der Spaltung. Voraussichtlich wird auch die Art und Weise der Vereinigung ähnlich sein, wenngleich es in Korea turbulenter zugehen kann. Obwohl die Grundprobleme sich gleichen, hat die koreanische Realität ihre Eigenwilligkeit. Ohnehin kennt die Historie kein Beispiel dafür, dass die Aufführung eines Stückes an anderem Ort in gleicher Weise abläuft. In Korea hat sich die Gegnerschaft jahrzehntelang erheblich krasser entfaltet, in den Feindbildern ist die militärische Komponente größer. Dennoch wollen dort beide Kontrahenten, anders als früher nur eine deutsche Seite, eine Vereinigung, aber bei tatsächlich unvereinbaren Absichten. Auch will man die Einheit dort besser gestalten als die Deutschen, etwa einen "gewendeten" Norden nicht vom Erfolgssüden absorbieren, sondern sich gleichgestellt fusionieren. Entsprechende Leitbilder gehen weit an der rauen Wirklichkeit vorbei

Uptake and Conversion of Radioactive Carbon Dioxide and Glucose in the Acerola and their Relationship to Ascorbic Acid Biosynthesis

A study of the fate of radiocarbon-labeled glucose and carbon dioxide in the acerola (West Indian Cherry) has shown that these substances follow patterns of conversion comparable to those observed in other plants. These substances were not preferentially incorporated into ascorbic acid by acerola fruit. Sucrose, several amino acids, and malic acid appear to compete successfully with ascorbic acid for the label from these precursors

Effects of n-butanol and filipin on membrane permeability of developing wheat endosperm with different sterol phenotypes.

Sterols are considered structural components of higher plant membranes on the basis of their presence in membrane-containing subcellular fractions [1—3], their effect on plant membrane permeability when added exogenously [4,5] and the sensitivity of plant cells to the polyene antibiotic filipin [6—8], which action is known to depend on the presence of sterols in the membrane (see [8]). Our recent finding of a gene that controls the free sterol level of developing wheat endosperm [9—11 ] allows to investígate whether endogenous sterol modifies membrane permeability in the same way as that added externally. Edible Connections: A Model for Citizen Dialogue Used to Discuss Local Food, Farm, and Community Issues

Edible Connections: Changing the Way We Talk About Food, Farm, and Community introduces a model created to facilitate public dialogue on local food system issues such as farmland preservation, food safety, and hunger. Overall, this article describes and compares Edible Connections to other public discourse strategies used to engage individuals within a community in discussions regarding concerns about their local food system. Two characteristics set Edible Connections apart from other public dialogue strategies. First, the media—print, broadcast, e-commerce—are forum participants. Second is Edible Connections’ clear focus on food system issues. Its format allows those carrying out forums the flexibility to structure the dialogue to meet specific local objectives. Descriptions of how Pennsylvania communities defined and carried out Edible Connections to address locally important questions on the food system illustrate the ways in which Edible Connections helps to meet community interests and needs

Strengthening Community Engagement Toward Sustainable Local Food Systems

Perspectives of Extension educators relative to local food system (LFS) issues are examined. These educators perceived consumer food safety, viable ag-related businesses, land use planning, farm land preservation, loss of family-owned farms, and access to quality foods as important issues. Extension educators viewed county Extension directors, regional directors, and program advisory boards as the strongest supporters for the local LFS. Lack of program resources to support and carry out LFS programming was identified as a barrier. Significant differences were also found between Extension educators\u27 demographic and program characteristics and important LFS issues
