Estudo de recepção de um vÃdeo sobre o funcionamento do motor elétrico produzido por estudantes de ensino médio
Este trabalho apresenta uma aproximação entre os estudos de produção e recepção audiovisual e o ensino de ciências ao considerar especificidades do uso do vÃdeo. Foi realizada a análise fÃlmica (Vanoye e Goliot-Lété) de um vÃdeo produzido por alunos de ensino médio sobre o funcionamentode um motor. Um estudo de recepção deste vÃdeo foi feito a partir de um modelo multidimensional (Schrøder), que amplia o modelo de codificação/decodificação de Hall. Tal estudo foi realizado com seis alunos espectadores em um grupo de discussão. Os resultados mostraram que, em geral, eles privilegiaram aspectos cientÃficos, dando menos ênfase aos estéticos. Estudos de recepção como esse podem trazer conhecimentos sobre o ensino-aprendizagem com audiovisuais, uma vez que permitem identificar dinâmicas existentes entre apropriação e resistência dos alunos ao material utilizado
Adding a Brane to the Brane-Anti-Brane Action in BSFT
We attempt to generalize the effective action for the D-brane-anti-D-brane
system obtained from boundary superstring field theory (BSFT) by adding an
extra D-brane to it to obtain a covariantized action for 2 D-branes and 1
anti-D-brane. We discuss the approximations made to obtain the effective action
in closed form. Among other properties, this effective action admits solitonic
solutions of codimension 2 (vortices) when one of the D-brane is far separated

Extracting finite structure from infinite language
This paper presents a novel connectionist memory-rule based model capable of learning the finite-state properties of an input language from a set of positive examples. The model is based upon an unsupervised recurrent self-organizing map [T. McQueen, A. Hopgood, J. Tepper, T. Allen, A recurrent self-organizing map for temporal sequence processing, in: Proceedings of Fourth International Conference in Recent Advances in Soft Computing (RASC2002), Nottingham, 2002] with laterally interconnected neurons. A derivation of functionalequivalence theory [J. Hopcroft, J. Ullman, Introduction to Automata Theory, Languages and Computation, vol. 1, Addison-Wesley, Reading, MA, 1979] is used that allows the model to exploit similarities between the future context of previously memorized sequences and the future context of the current input sequence. This bottom-up learning algorithm binds functionally related neurons together to form states. Results show that the model is able to learn the Reber grammar [A. Cleeremans, D. Schreiber, J. McClelland, Finite state automata and simple recurrent networks, Neural Computation, 1 (1989) 372–381] perfectly from a randomly generated training set and to generalize to sequences beyond the length of those found in the training set
Simple heuristics for the assembly line worker assignment and balancing problem
We propose simple heuristics for the assembly line worker assignment and
balancing problem. This problem typically occurs in assembly lines in sheltered
work centers for the disabled. Different from the classical simple assembly
line balancing problem, the task execution times vary according to the assigned
worker. We develop a constructive heuristic framework based on task and worker
priority rules defining the order in which the tasks and workers should be
assigned to the workstations. We present a number of such rules and compare
their performance across three possible uses: as a stand-alone method, as an
initial solution generator for meta-heuristics, and as a decoder for a hybrid
genetic algorithm. Our results show that the heuristics are fast, they obtain
good results as a stand-alone method and are efficient when used as a initial
solution generator or as a solution decoder within more elaborate approaches.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Spectral flow and boundary string field theory for angled D-branes
D-branes intersecting at an arbitrary fixed angle generically constitute a
configuration unstable toward recombination. The reconnection of the branes
nucleates at the intersection point and involves a generalization of the
process of brane decay of interest to non-perturbative string dynamics as well
as cosmology. After reviewing the string spectrum of systems of angled branes,
we show that worldsheet twist superfields may be used in the context of
Boundary Superstring Field Theory to describe the dynamics. Changing the angle
between the branes is seen from the worldsheet as spectral flow with boundary
insertions flowing from bosonic to fermionic operators. We calculate the
complete tachyon potential and the low energy effective action as a function of
angle and find an expression that interpolates between the brane-antibrane and
the Dirac-Born-Infeld actions. The potential captures the mechanism of D-brane

An integrated approach to modelling the fluid-structure interaction of a collapsible tube
The well known collapsible tube experiment was conducted to obtain flow, pressure and materials property data for steady state conditions. These were then used as the boundary conditions for a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model using a propriety computer code, LS-DYNA. The shape profiles for the tube were also recorded. In order to obtain similar collapse modes to the experiment, it was necessary to model the tube flat, and then inflate it into a circular profile, leaving residual stresses in the walls. The profile shape then agreed well with the experimental ones. Two departures from the physical properties were required to reduce computer time to an acceptable level. One of these was the lowering of the speed of sound by two orders of magnitude which, due to the low velocities involved, still left the mach number below 0.2. The other was to increase the thickness of the tube to prevent the numerical collapse of elements. A compensation for this was made by lowering the Young's modulus for the tube material. Overall the results are qualitatively good. They give an indication of the power of the current FSI algorithms and the need to combine experiment and computer models in order to maximise the information that can be extracted both in terms of quantity and quality
Superconformal mechanics and nonlinear supersymmetry
We show that a simple change of the classical boson-fermion coupling
constant, , , in the superconformal mechanics
model gives rise to a radical change of a symmetry: the modified classical and
quantum systems are characterized by the nonlinear superconformal symmetry. It
is generated by the four bosonic integrals which form the so(1,2) x u(1)
subalgebra, and by the 2(n+1) fermionic integrals constituting the two spin-n/2
so(1,2)-representations and anticommuting for the order n polynomials of the
even generators. We find that the modified quantum system with an integer value
of the parameter is described simultaneously by the two nonlinear
superconformal symmetries of the orders relatively shifted in odd number. For
the original quantum model with , , this means the
presence of the order 2p nonlinear superconformal symmetry in addition to the

An Improved Brane Anti-Brane Action from Boundary Superstring Field Theory and Multi-Vortex Solutions
We present an improved effective action for the D-brane-anti-D-brane system
obtained from boundary superstring field theory. Although the action looks
highly non-trivial, it has simple explicit multi-vortex (i.e. codimension-2
multi-BPS D-brane) multi-anti-vortex solutions. The solutions have a curious
degeneracy corresponding to different ``magnetic'' fluxes at the core of each
vortex. We also generalize the brane anti-brane effective action that is
suitable for the study of the inflationary scenario and the production of
defects in the early universe. We show that when a brane and anti-brane are
distantly separated, although the system is classically stable it can decay via
