Solving Pollution Through Design Integration: A Sustainable Model for Underdeveloped Mexican Cities

Oaxaca requires an architecture that can cleanse the environment, provide affordable and clean energy, and mitigate the crime and poverty within their city. Community awareness is key to the development of this architecture, and this project will focus on creating a design that influences and informs the community about a safer and more sustainable way of life. This project will focus on using the United Nations sustainability goals to address the global challenges we face including poverty, climate, and inequality. This thesis will create a building that will integrate these goals while still maintaining the cultural aspect within the region. Where even the most impoverished states can achieve sustainable efforts for the future. My thesis is situated in Miahuatlan, Mexico. It is one of the most impoverished states in Mexico that lacks some of the most basic human needs and has a poverty rate of 65%. This thesis will tackle Oaxaca’s major concerns including poverty, pollution, access to clean and renewable energy, and the lack of resources to design long term solutions. It will also create an architecture that is focused on the prosperity of the community and educating the youth on climate change to put them on a sustainable path early on in their lives. This sustainable model will set an example to surrounding cities that even with limited resources a building can be designed to enhance energy production, community learning, and improve the way of life of even the most unfortunate individuals in any developing city. Through a pedagogical approach, this project will incorporate sustainable systems within the building that will be visible to the community. This will enhance their knowledge of how sustainability systems work, and what pollution can do the environment. It will also incorporate classrooms and workshops where the community can interact and learn about sustainable systems and what it means to create a greener planet. I believe that communal spaces are needed to create safer environments, so designing a marketplace that strengthens community interaction and keeps children away from the increasing crime within Mexican cities is essential for the development of this sustainable model. The implementations of all these systems and goals into one project strives to create a better future for the less fortunate cities on our planet. The path to a net-zero and sustainable future mainly targets highly developed and wealthier cities, but I disagree. I believe that even underdeveloped cities should also be incorporated into this path of creating a greener and safer environment. The goal of this project is to leave no one behind in a world full of pollution and poverty

Transformation of a grid of quadrats to cope with perspective artifacts

    Get PDF
The direct superimposition of a standard test grid of congruent quadrats onto an image bearing a population of particles exhibiting perspective artifacts, tends to increase the variance of the population size estimator, because the quadrat contents become unbalanced. If the quadrats are transformed according to the same projection mechanism affecting the particles, however, then the variance is restored into moderate values. Our purpose was to provide exact, easily programmable equations for the relevant transform

Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. We present the characterization of five new short-period low-mass eclipsing binaries (LMEBs) from the WFCAM Transit Survey. The analysis was performed by using the photometric WFCAM J-mag data and additional low- and intermediate-resolution spectroscopic data to obtain both orbital and physical properties of the studied sample. The light curves and the measured radial velocity curves were modelled simultaneously with the JKTEBOP code, with Markov chain MonteCarlo simulations for the error estimates. The best-model fit have revealed that the investigated detached binaries are in very close orbits, with orbital separations of 2.9 ≤ a ≤ 6.7R⊙ and short periods of 0.59 ≤ Porb ≤ 1.72 d, approximately. We have derived stellar masses between 0.24 and 0.72M⊙ and radii ranging from 0.42 to 0.67 R⊙. The great majority of the LMEBs in our sample has an estimated radius far from the predicted values according to evolutionary models. The components with derived masses of M < 0.6M⊙ present a radius inflation of ~9 per cent or more. This general behaviour follows the trend of inflation for partially radiative stars proposed previously. These systems add to the increasing sample of low-mass stellar radii that are not well-reproduced by stellarmodels. They further highlight the need to understand the magnetic activity and physical state of small stars. Missions like TESS will provide many such systems to perform high-precision radius measurements to tightly constrain low-mass stellar evolution models.Peer reviewe

Treball final de Grau en Disseny i Desenvolupament de Videojocs. Codi: VJ1241. Curs acadèmic: 2018/2019The main motivation to establish this project was my interest in virtual reality, I am intrigued by the amount of possibilities it can offer and how it can evolve. I also wanted to make an interface that was useful once finished. Thanks to the professor P. J. Sanz, who was willing to guide a project of these characteristics and to his recommendations and help during all the development time we were able to make this project oriented to HRI in underwater interventions

On the precisión of the nucleator

    Get PDF
Abstract The nucleator is a design unbiased method of local stereology for estimating the volume of a bounded object. The only information required lies in the intersection of the object with an isotropic random ray emanating from a fixed point (called the pivotal point) associated with the object. For instance, the volume of a neuron can be estimated from a random ray emanating from its nucleolus. The nucleator is extensively used in biosciences because it is efficient and easy to apply. The estimator variance can be reduced by increasing the number of rays. In an earlier paper a systematic sampling design was proposed, and theoretical variance predictors were derived, for the corresponding volume estimator. Being the only variance predictors hitherto available for the nucleator, our basic goal was to check their statistical performance by means of Monte Carlo resampling on computer reconstructions of real objects. As a plus, the empirical distribution of the volume estimator revealed statistical properties of practical relevance
