OBJECTIVE:To assess plasma levels of muscle soreness biomarkers, namely creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and myoglobin, in professional volleyball players following anaerobic exercise with and without the use of elastic stockings. METHODS: Ten female volleyball players aged 18 to 25 years-old were assessed with and without below-knee 20 to 30 mmHg compression stockings (Sport Active®, Venosan, Abreu e Lima, Brazil). Biomarker levels were assessed at three different moments: M0, early in the morning, with the athletes at rest, not using elastic stockings; M1, early in the morning, following a bout of exercise using elastic stockings; M2, seven days later, following the same bout of exercise, however not using elastic stockings. The Borg scale was used after each series of exercise to evaluate the physical effort. RESULTS: The means values obtained for creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were, respectively, 117.7±40.2 and 134.2±11.3 U/L at M0; 138.2±47.2 and 157.9±10.1 U/L at M1; and 161.3±59.9 and 177.2±18.8 U/L at M2. The mean values obtained for myoglobin were 31.5±6.5; 34.9±5.6 and 38.6±12.6 µg/L at the moments M0, M1 and M2, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between M1 and M2 (Tukey) for creatine kinase (p=0.0007) and lactate dehydrogenase (p=0.000), but not for myoglobin (p=0.1135). Borg scale scores obtained at M1 and M2 were, respectively, 17.8 and 18.2, without statistically significant differences between them (Wilcoxon). CONCLUSION: The use of elastic stockings was associated with lower plasma levels of biomarkers of muscle injury after exercise.OBJETIVO: Avaliar os níveis plasmáticos dos biomarcadores de lesão muscular, a saber, creatina quinase, lactato desidrogenase e mioglobina, em atletas profissionais de voleibol após exercícios musculares anaeróbicos, com e sem uso de meia elástica.

From the documentary "Araguaia: Campo Sagrado" (2011), with the direction of Evandro Medeiros and the production of Labor Films, it was intended to seek, in an interpretation of the speeches of the social actors, the production of memory regarding the historical event of the Guerrilla of Araguaia. In order to do so, it was necessary to make an incursion into the history of cinema, identifying and approaching the nonfiction documentary genre as a producer of meanings, not forgetting the perspectives found under its idealizer, as well as focused on the study of the form of construction of history from this filmic genre. The work begins with the study of the military regime experienced in Brazil in the years 1964/1985. It also provides a historical framework on the democratic political regime and human rights, on the armed confrontation and the disparity of forces that took place in the Araguaia. At another point, it was necessary to approach the memory portrayed by Le Goff and Pollak, in order to have a perspective of the collective memory produced. Using the hermeneutics proposed by Gadamer, analyzing the speeches of the subjects present in the documentary, we sought to identify the likely contextualized meaning to the present day. In response, there was a strong oppression of peasants and guerrillas in the Xambioá region and settlements on the Araguaia River in Tocantins and Pará during the confrontation of the Araguaia Guerrilla; the memories then produced are of fear, suffering and aversion to the regime installed at the time, as well as it can be deduced from the speeches of the social subjects that there is still a veiled silence of the hardships then experienced.

BACKGROUND: Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism, a very common post-surgical complication, can be made pharmacologically or via mechanical methods, such as the use of anti-thrombosis socks and intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). IPC is a mechanical method of prophylaxis that deserves the attention of the medical community. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of IPC on the blood flow of common femoral veins in feet, legs and thighs of healthy adults. METHODS: The sample was comprised of 10 volunteers (seven females and three males), adults (20-40 years), without history of venous thromboembolism. After a rest period (10 min), with the patient in the supine position, blood flow was measured (three times) via vascular ultrasonography at the femoral vein, 1 cm above of the saphenofemoral junction, in both limbs, without (control) and with IPC in the patients foot, leg and thigh. Compression (130 mmHg on foot and 45 mmHg on leg and thigh) was applied at compression cycles of 11 seconds and emptying cycles of 20-60 seconds. Blood flow evaluations were performed at compression cycle peaks. Values were compared by analysis of variance (Tukey test), p < 0.05 indicating statistically significant difference. RESULTS: Use of IPC on the left and right lower limbs caused a percentage increase in the femoral blood flow of 37.6 and 70.8% (feet), 143.9 and 164.7% (legs), and 132.6 and 128.9% (thighs), respectively. Variations were statistically significant for application in legs and thighs. CONCLUSION: Use of IPC improves blood flow when applied in legs or thighs.CONTEXTO: A profilaxia do tromboembolismo venoso pode ser feita por métodos farmacológicos ou de forma mecânica, com o uso de meias antitrombo e compressão pneumática (CPI).

From Araguaia: Campo Sagrado (2011), this article sought to carry out a hermeneutic of the narratives of the social actors - peasants - with the focus of the production of memory on the Araguaia Guerrilla. For the elaboration of the research, it was necessary to approach the memory worked by Le Goff (2011) and Pollak (1989) to have a perspective on the collective memory produced. Using the hermeneutics proposed by Gadamer (1999) sought to understand these narratives talks about the subjects present in the film, trying to understand them even in the contemporary perspective. He problematized the oppression of peasants and guerrillas in the region of Xambioá and settlements on the Araguaia River in Tocantins and Pará during the confrontation of the Araguaia Guerrilla. The memories then produced are fear, suffering and aversion to the regime installed at the time, as well as from the speeches of the social subjects interviewed, which are still traumas that have been experienced. Severe cognitive dysfunction and shrinking lung syndrome in systemic lupus erythematous

    Get PDF
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that can affect any organ or system. Neuropsychiatric and pulmonary involvement can occur in 40 and 50% of patients respectively, and may occur in several different clinical forms. While the main neuropsychiatric manifestations are represented by cognitive impairment, organic cerebral syndromes, delirium, psychosis, seizures, and peripheral neuropathies, the main forms of pulmonary involvement are pleurisy with or without pleural effusion, pneumonitis, interstitial disease, pulmonary hypertension, and alveolar hemorrhage. The authors report the case of a 49-year-old woman whose first manifestation of SLE was represented by two rare manifestations: rapidly progressive cognitive impairment, which was associated with respiratory failure caused by the shrinking lung syndrome. The authors call attention to the under-diagnosis of lupus pulmonary complications and its association with severe cognitive impairment that often necessitates aggressive treatment

The aim of this work was to compare the partial sequences of 16S rRNA gene of rhizobia strain patterns already classified with strains recommended for the production of inoculants in Brazil, in order to verify the reliability of partial sequencing of the gene for the purpose of rapid identification of strains. (PCR) sequencing using primers on the coding region of the 16S rRNA gene among the bacteria studied was conducted. The results were analyzed by consulting the nucleotides' similarity based on Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (Blastn) and by interpreting the phylogenetic trees generated by bioinformatic tools. The taxonomic classification of Semia strains recommended for legume inoculation based on morphological properties and host specificity was not confirmed in all strains. The similarity of the Blastn consultation by partial sequencing of the gene found in strains studied is consistent with the classification proposed by the construction of a phylogenetic tree of sequences of strains in most cases

The aim of this study was to investigate the ultrastructural characteristics of primordial follicles after culturing of sheep ovarian cortical slices in the presence of indol acetic acid (IAA), Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), and FSH. To evaluate ultrastructure of primordial follicles cultured in MEM (control) or in MEM containing IAA, EGF, and FSH, fragments of cultured tissue were processes for transmission electron microscopy. Except in the control, primordial follicles cultured in supplemented media for 6 d were ultrastructurally normal. They had oocyte with intact nucleus and the cytoplasm contained heterogeneous-sized lipid droplets and numerous round or elongated mitochondria with intact parallel cristae were observed. Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) was rarely found. The granulosa cells cytoplasm contained a great number of mitochondria and abundant RER. In conclusion, the presence of IAA, EGF, and FSH helped to maintain ultrastructural integrity of sheep primordial follicles cultured in vitro

Objective. To describe the experience of a tertiary center in Brazil to which patients are referred whose fetuses are at increased risk for congenital heart diseases (CHDs). Methods. This was a cross-sectional observational study. The data was collected prospectively, during the year 2012, through a screening protocol of the fetal heart adapted from the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) guideline. We performed a fetal echocardiogram screening for all pregnant women who were referred to the fetal cardiology outpatient obstetrics clinic of a university hospital. The exams were classified as normal or abnormal. The cases considered abnormal were undergone to a postnatal echocardiogram. We categorized the abnormal fetal heart according to severity in “complex,” “significant,” “minor,” and “others.” Results. We performed 271 fetal heart screening. The incidence of abnormal screenings was 9.96% (27 fetuses). The structural CHD when categorized due to severity showed 48.1% (n=13) of “complex” cases, 18.5% (n=5) “significant” cases, and 7.4% (n=2) “minor” cases. The most common referral reason was by maternal causes (67%) followed by fetal causes (33%). The main referral indication was maternal metabolic disease (30%), but there was just one fetus with CHD in such cases (1.2%). CHDs were found in 19/29 fetuses with suspicion of some cardiac abnormality by obstetrician (65.5%). Conclusion. We observed a high rate of CHD in our population. We also found that there was higher incidence of complex cases
