    Fast figuring of large optics by reactive atom plasma

    The next generation of ground-based astronomical observatories will require fabrication and maintenance of extremely large segmented mirrors tens of meters in diameter. At present, the large production of segments required by projects like E-ELT and TMT poses time frames and costs feasibility questions. This is principally due to a bottleneck stage in the optical fabrication chain: the final figuring step. State-of-the-art figure correction techniques, so far, have failed to meet the needs of the astronomical community for mass production of large, ultra-precise optical surfaces. In this context, Reactive Atom Plasma (RAP) is proposed as a candidate figuring process that combines nanometer level accuracy with high material removal rates. RAP is a form of plasma enhanced chemical etching at atmospheric pressure based on Inductively Coupled Plasma technology. The rapid figuring capability of the RAP process has already been proven on medium sized optical surfaces made of silicon based materials. In this paper, the figure correction of a 3 meters radius of curvature, 400 mm diameter spherical ULE mirror is presented. This work demonstrates the large scale figuring capability of the Reactive Atom Plasma process. The figuring is carried out by applying an in-house developed procedure that promotes rapid convergence. A 2.3 μm p-v initial figure error is removed within three iterations, for a total processing time of 2.5 hours. The same surface is then re-polished and the residual error corrected again down to& lambda;/20 nm rms. These results highlight the possibility of figuring a metre-class mirror in about ten hours

    Reactive Atom Plasma (RAP) figuring machine for meter class optical surfaces

    A new surface figuring machine called Helios 1200 is presented in this paper. It is designed for the figuring of meter sized optical surfaces with form accuracy correction capability better than 20 nm rms within a reduced number of iterations. Unlike other large figuring facilities using energy beams, Helios 1200 operates a plasma torch at atmospheric pressure, offers a high material removal rate, and a relatively low running cost. This facility is ideal to process large optical components, lightweight optics, silicon based and difficult to machine materials, aspheric, and free form surfaces. Also, the surfaces processed by the reactive atom plasma (RAP) are easy to fine polish through hand conventional sub-aperture polishing techniques. These unique combined features lead to a new capability for the fabrication of optical components opening up novel design possibilities for optical engineers. The key technical features of this large RAP machine are fast figuring capabilities, non-contact material removal tool, the use of a near Gaussian footprint energy beam, and a proven tool path strategy for the management of the heat transfer. Helios 1200 complies with the European machine safety standard and can be used with different types of reactive gases using either fluorine or chlorine compounds. In this paper, first the need for large optical component is discussed. Then, the RAP facility is described: radio frequency R.F generator, plasma torch, and 3 axis computer numerically controlled motion system. Both the machine design and the performance of the RAP tool is assessed under specific production conditions and in the context of meter class mirror and lens fabrication

    Matter-wave interferometry: towards antimatter interferometers

    Starting from an elementary model and refining it to take into account more realistic effects, we discuss the limitations and advantages of matter-wave interferometry in different configurations. We focus on the possibility to apply this approach to scenarios involving antimatter, such as positrons and positronium atoms. In particular, we investigate the Talbot-Lau interferometer with material gratings and discuss in details the results in view of the possible experimental verification.Comment: 18 pages; 8 figure

    Robotic and clinical evaluation of upper limb motor performance in patients with Friedreich's Ataxia: an observational study

    Background: Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is the most common hereditary autosomal recessive form of ataxia. In this disease there is early manifestation of gait ataxia, and dysmetria of the arms and legs which causes impairment in daily activities that require fine manual dexterity. To date there is no cure for this disease. Some novel therapeutic approaches are ongoing in different steps of clinical trial. Development of sensitive outcome measures is crucial to prove therapeutic effectiveness. The aim of the study was to assess the reliability and sensitivity of quantitative and objective assessment of upper limb performance computed by means of the robotic device and to evaluate the correlation with clinical and functional markers of the disease severity. Methods: Here we assess upper limb performances by means of the InMotion Arm Robot, a robot designed for clinical neurological applications, in a cohort of 14 children and young adults affected by FRDA, matched for age and gender with 18 healthy subjects. We focused on the analysis of kinematics, accuracy, smoothness, and submovements of the upper limb while reaching movements were performed. The robotic evaluation of upper limb performance consisted of planar reaching movements performed with the robotic system. The motors of the robot were turned off, so that the device worked as a measurement tool. The status of the disease was scored using the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA). Relationships between robotic indices and a range of clinical and disease characteristics were examined. Results: All our robotic indices were significantly different between the two cohorts except for two, and were highly and reliably discriminative between healthy and subjects with FRDA. In particular, subjects with FRDA exhibited slower movements as well as loss of accuracy and smoothness, which are typical of the disease. Duration of Movement, Normalized Jerk, and Number of Submovements were the best discriminative indices, as they were directly and easily measurable and correlated with the status of the disease, as measured by SARA. Conclusions: Our results suggest that outcome measures obtained by means of robotic devices can improve the sensitivity of clinical evaluations of patients’ dexterity and can accurately and efficiently quantify changes over time in clinical trials, particularly when functional scales appear to be no longer sensitive

    State-of-the-Art of Hand Exoskeleton Systems

    This paper deals with the analysis of the state-of-the-art of robotic hand exoskeletons (updated at May 2011), which is intended as the first step of a designing activity. A large number of hand exoskeletons (both products and prototypes) that feature some common characteristics and many special peculiarities are reported in the literature. Indeed, in spite of very similar functionalities, different hand exoskeletons can be extremely different for the characteristics of their mechanism architectures, control systems and working principles. The aim of this paper is to provide the reader with a complete and schematic picture of the state-of-the-art of hand exoskeletons. The focus is placed on the description of the main aspects that are involved in the exoskeleton design such as the system kinematics, the actuator systems, the transmission parts and the control schemes. Additionally, the critical issues provided by the literature analysis are discussed in order to enlighten the differences and the common features of different practical solutions. This paper may help to understand both the reasons why certain solutions are proposed for the different applications and the advantages and drawbacks of the different designs proposed in the literature. The motivation of this study is the need to design a new hand exoskeleton for rehabilitation purposes

    Mitochondrial DNA reveals genetic structuring of <i>Pinna nobilis</i> across the Mediterranean Sea

    Pinna nobilis is the largest endemic Mediterranean marine bivalve. During past centuries, various human activities have promoted the regression of its populations. As a consequence of stringent standards of protection, demographic expansions are currently reported in many sites. The aim of this study was to provide the first large broad-scale insight into the genetic variability of P. nobilis in the area that encompasses the western Mediterranean, Ionian Sea, and Adriatic Sea marine ecoregions. To accomplish this objective twenty-five populations from this area were surveyed using two mitochondrial DNA markers (COI and 16S). Our dataset was then merged with those obtained in other studies for the Aegean and Tunisian populations (eastern Mediterranean), and statistical analyses (Bayesian model-based clustering, median-joining network, AMOVA, mismatch distribution, Tajima’s and Fu’s neutrality tests and Bayesian skyline plots) were performed. The results revealed genetic divergence among three distinguishable areas: (1) western Mediterranean and Ionian Sea; (2) Adriatic Sea; and (3) Aegean Sea and Tunisian coastal areas. From a conservational point of view, populations from the three genetically divergent groups found may be considered as different management units

    Analisi della struttura genetica di <i>Hediste diversicolor</i> (Polychaeta, Nereididae) nel Mediterraneo occidentale mediante marcatori ISSR

    La struttura genetica del polichete Hediste diversicolor del Mediterraneo occidentale è stata studiata utilizzando gli ISSR (Inter Simple Sequence Repeats) come marcatori genetici. Sono stati raccolti 30 individui in ciascuna delle seguenti località: Stagno di Calich (Sardegna N-O), Baia di Figari (Corsica S-O), Migliacciaru (Corsica E), Fiume Morto (Toscana N-O) e Coltano (Toscana N-O). L'MDS applicato alle distanze genetiche individuali ha mostrato elevata diversità tra gli individui, ma non ha messo in evidenza alcuna sottostrutturazione genetica nelle popolazioni. Un forte segnale della divergenza genetica tra le popolazioni è dato dal fatto che il 37% del numero totale di bande rilevato è costituito da bande private, cioè esclusive di una popolazione. La varianza genetica, analizzata mediante AMOVA, è risultata equamente ripartita nelle componenti intra- e inter-popolazione (rispettivamente 46.9% e 53.1%). La Φ-statistica ha evidenziato la divergenza genetica tra le popolazioni (Φst = 0.469, P&lt;0.001). La notevole divergenza genetica tra le popolazioni di H. diversicolor è determinata in primo luogo dalla frammentazione naturale dell'habitat che produce isolamento con virtuale assenza di flusso genico tra le popolazioni. L'assenza di sottostrutturazione delle popolazioni, invece, conferma le osservazioni fatte in passato sulla dispersione degli adulti e delle postlarve all'interno dei singoli biotopi
