Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna we Wrocławiu na przestrzeni ostatnich 15 lat uległa wielu znaczącym przemianom. Reorganizacja sieci bibliotek publicznych w mieście w takim zakresie to działanie kompleksowe i wyjątkowe w skali kraju.

    Language Performativity

Austin, proposing the theory of speech acts in 1955, wanted to restrict his analyses to everyday use of language, to how it actually operates in a heterogeneous space of communication. Derrida attacked those elements of the theory of speech acts, which guided Austin’s argumentation. Among these elements were the issue of a fixed source of expression associated with the subject’s intentionality, closure of the message by the context that can be precisely defined, exclusion by Austin citations as an example of parasitic use of language. Arguments proposed by Derrida forced the defenders of speech acts theory to rethink its basic assumptions. Exchange of arguments between deconstruction and theory of speech acts dominated the sphere of research on linguistic performances. To better understand the nature of this dispute, I will present and comment two key texts: “How to do things with words?” (Austin) and “Signature Event Context” (Derrida)

The authors of the article aimed to reconstruct the visions of Greek and Roman literatures which were contrasted by Mickiewicz in his Lausanne lectures. The authors focused their attention not only on following the typical differences in presenting of these literatures but also on finding in these literatures elements that must have been especially interesting for a Romantic poet because of their connections with his own literary experience. In this article the authors attempted to present some examples of issues that could have been important (demanding an interpretation) for both, a Classical philologist and a Romantic poet

The effectiveness of ‘practice while watching’ technique for the first aid training of the chemical industry employees

INTRODUCTION: Industrial accidents constitute about 20% of all causes of accidents. They are often sudden, unexpected and may lead to tragic consequences, which however can be partially reduced if first aid and emergency treatment are given as soon as possible. The most important part of a chain of survival is the bystanders’ response. In practice, it is highly dependent on the ability of co-workers to perform basic first-aid tasks. The aim of this paper was to present the effectiveness of ‘practice while watching’ training method for the first aid training of the chemical industry employees. The authors focused on the most important elements of the training, which have an impact on the acquisition of knowledge and skills of first aid.  MATERIAL AND METHODS: The training involved 69 employees of the chemical industry. The test sheets were used for the assessment, where each of the action steps was assigned points 0 for incorrect and 1 for a properly performed activity.  RESULTS: Each step was completed by at least 76% of workers. When providing both adult and infant CPR, the main difficulty was calling for help. Younger employees obtained better results than older colleagues.  CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated the high effectiveness of the ‘practice while watching’ method. In addition, workers’ age turned out to be a significant variable which affected their performance.

Good practices in asynchronous e-learning — a short guideline document for Polish medical teachers — a pilot study

INTRODUCTION: E-learning is gaining popularity also in medical education. It offers students unlimited access to educational materials, helps meet their individual preferences by adapting various learning styles, and is considered to be at least as effective as traditional lectures. However, this can only be true provided that e-learning is of good quality. Short guidelines may be used to familiarise medical teachers with good practices in e-learning, but they should meet the needs of their users, and some areas may require more attention. They should be identified, and medical teachers should be provided with additional resources covering them. This study aimed to develop a short guideline for Polish medical teachers and determine potentially troublesome areas. METHODS: A detailed review of the literature was performed to create a guideline on preparing and conducting e-learning classes. The most important items from it were listed as an evaluation template and pre-tested on a sample of 10 e-learning courses in a search for areas requiring more attention. RESULTS: Half of the courses did not provide students with a syllabus, and none of them clearly defined intended learning outcomes. Also, adult learning concepts were not introduced satisfactorily. Only seven out of 10 courses used activities at all, and they often tested simple knowledge reproduction, were limited to poorly-written test questions, and placed at the end of lessons. CONCLUSIONS: In this pilot study three potentially troublesome areas were identified: defining learning outcomes, application of adult learning theory, and choice of activities. KEY WORDS: e-learning quality, e-learning guidelines, medical teacher

Optimal parameters of monolithic high-contrast grating mirrors

    Get PDF
In this Letter a fully vectorial numerical model is used to search for the construction parameters of monolithic high-contrast grating (MHCG) mirrors providing maximal power reflectance. We determine the design parameters of highly reflecting MHCG mirrors where the etching depth of the stripes is less than two wavelengths in free space. We analyze MHCGs in a broad range of real refractive index values corresponding to most of the common optoelectronic materials in use today. Our results comprise a complete image of possible highly reflecting MHCG mirror constructions for potential use in optoelectronic devices and systems. We support the numerical analysis by experimental verification of the high reflectance via a GaAs MHCG designed for a wavelength of 980 nm

The study of palm and rapeseed oil stability during frying

    Get PDF
Palm oil is characterized by high oxidation stability, high smoke point, low foam making properties, limited penetration into the product, what makes it ideal for processes requiring thermal treatment such as frying. The aim of the study was to investigate the chemical composition and thermooxidative stability of red palm olein, rapeseed oil and their mixtures during deep-frying of French fries. Analysis of fatty acids composition and basic parameters of fresh oils (acid number, peroxide value, polar compounds content, induction time) were performed. During frying, changes in acid number, polar compounds in oils as well as consumers’ acceptance of the fries fried in these oils were investigated. During the 32-hour of frying, the lowest chemical changes occurred in palm olein, what was confirmed by low acid values (0.99 mg KOH/g) and low polar content (14.4%). At the end of the experiment, the oil mixture had the highest polar fraction value of 25.0%. In the opinion of consumers, fries fried in rapeseed oil were “the best”, while French fries fried on palm oil were considered “artificial”, “chemical” and “disgusting”. The reason for this opinion was the addition of β-carotene to this oil. On the other hand β-carotene from palm olein had a great positive effect on the colour of the fries, but at the same time had a negative effect on the taste
