There are many studies that compare the accuracy of multislice (MSCT) and cone beam (CBCT) computed tomography for evaluations in the maxillofacial region. However, further studies comparing both acquisition techniques for the evaluation of simulated mandibular bone lesions are needed. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of MSCT and CBCT in the diagnosis of simulated mandibular bone lesions by means of cross sectional images and axial/MPR slices. Lesions with different dimensions, shape and locularity were produced in 15 dry mandibles. The images were obtained following the cross sectional and axial/MPR (Multiplanar Reconstruction) imaging protocols and were interpreted independently. CBCT and MSCT showed similar results in depicting the percentage of cortical bone involvement, with great sensitivity and specificity (p < 0.005). There were no significant intra- or inter-examiner differences between axial/MPR images and cross sectional images with regard to sensitivity and specificity. CBCT showed results similar to those of MSCT for the identification of the number of simulated bone lesions. Cross sectional slices and axial/MPR images presented high accuracy, proving useful for bone lesion diagnosis.(FAPESP) São Paulo Research Foundation(CAPES) Coordination for the Advancement of Higher Education Personne

The use of cone-beam computed tomography images (CBCT) providing a better assessment of bone injuries, although the sensibility of lesions measurement might be improved by the use of enhancement filters. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the influence of enhancement filters in apical bone loss measurement. Eighteen CBCT cases randomly selected of apical bone loss were evaluated. The analyses were carried out following the evaluation in axial, coronal and sagittal protocols, using enhancement filters as Hard, Normal, and Very Sharp. The variables were statistically analyzed by Friedman and Wilcoxon test, Spearman?s rho, and intraclass correlation coefficient. The differences between filters in axial and sagittal protocols were significant (p<0.05); however, this was not observed in the coronal slice. The use of Hard filter demonstrates better results than Very Sharp and Normal filter, improving significantly the bone loss measurement. A strong, significant and positive correlation was noted for all filters (with p< 0.001), such as a strong agreement between the variables, when the Normal filter was used as a reference. The use of enhancement filters increases the sensitivity of alveolar bone loss measurement, with relative advantage for Hard filter

Information about the health councils are important to set strategies that guarantee the their participative management and maximum performance. We aimed to analyze the organization and functioning of the municipal and regional health councils of Fortaleza - CE. It is an exploratory, descriptive study. Data were collected between February and July 2006 and, from February to June 2007 through documental analysis ofcouncil's files and semi-structured interviews with the council staff. In all, 04 representatives of the municipal council and three from each regional council have been interviewed, in a total of 22 councilors. Sampling was randomically done, and participants were volunteer. Data were organized into categories, and analyzed through speech analysis. The study was approved by the Committee of Ethics in Research under the number 04497443-4. Findings showed a low attendance of the regional councilors in the meetings. Councilors mentioned that they had difficulties in understanding their roles. We have perceived that most of both regional and municipal councils have good facilities and staff that allow them to work properly. However, some were considered to be in poor conditions particularly regarding physical facilities, which hinders the functioning, organization and popular participation in the service's management follow-up.Informações acerca dos conselhos de saúde são importantes para se traçar estratégias que garantam a gestão participativa desses e seu pleno funcionamento.

Microbiomes of Velloziaceae from phosphorus-impoverished soils of the campos rupestres, a biodiversity hotspot

The rocky, seasonally-dry and nutrient-impoverished soils of the Brazilian campos rupestres impose severe growth-limiting conditions on plants. Species of a dominant plant family, Velloziaceae, are highly specialized to low-nutrient conditions and seasonal water availability of this environment, where phosphorus (P) is the key limiting nutrient. Despite plant-microbe associations playing critical roles in stressful ecosystems, the contribution of these interactions in the campos rupestres remains poorly studied. Here we present the first microbiome data of Velloziaceae spp. thriving in contrasting substrates of campos rupestres. We assessed the microbiomes of Vellozia epidendroides, which occupies shallow patches of soil, and Barbacenia macrantha, growing on exposed rocks. The prokaryotic and fungal profiles were assessed by rRNA barcode sequencing of epiphytic and endophytic compartments of roots, stems, leaves and surrounding soil/rocks. We also generated root and substrate (rock/soil)-associated metagenomes of each plant species. We foresee that these data will contribute to decipher how the microbiome contributes to plant functioning in the campos rupestres, and to unravel new strategies for improved crop productivity in stressful environments6COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESP88881.068071/2014-012016/23218-0Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) [2016/23218-0]; U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE-JGI)United States Department of Energy (DOE) [CSP 503222]; Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES)CAPES [88881.068071/2014-01]; FAPESPFundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) [2018/04240-0]; CAPESCAPES; Office of Science of the U.S. Department of EnergyUnited States Department of Energy (DOE) [DE-AC02-05CH11231
