    An isopentenyl transferase transgenic wheat isoline exhibits less seminal root growth impairment and a differential metabolite profile under Cd stress

    Cadmium is one of the most important contaminants and it induces severe plant growth restriction. In this study, we analyzed the metabolic changes associated with root growth restriction caused by cadmium in the early seminal root apex of wheat. Our study included two genotypes: the commercial variety ProINTA Federal (WT) and the PSARK::IPT (IPT) line which exhibit high-grade yield performance under water deficit. Root tips of seedlings grown for 72 h without or with 10 μM CdCl2 (Cd-WT and Cd-IPT) were compared. Root length reduction was more severe in Cd-WT than Cd-IPT. Cd decreased superoxide dismutase activity in both lines and increased catalase activity only in the WT. In Cd-IPT, ascorbate and guaiacol peroxidase activities raised compared to Cd-WT. The hormonal homeostasis was altered by the metal, with significant decreases in abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, 12-oxophytodienoic acid, gibberellins GA20, and GA7 levels. Increases in flavonoids and phenylamides were also found. Root growth impairment was not associated with a decrease in expansin (EXP) transcripts. On the contrary, TaEXPB8 expression increased in the WT treated by Cd. Our findings suggest that the line expressing the PSARK::IPT construction increased the homeostatic range to cope with Cd stress, which is visible by a lesser reduction of the root elongation compared to WT plants. The decline of root growth produced by Cd was associated with hormonal imbalance at the root apex level. We hypothesize that activation of phenolic secondary metabolism could enhance antioxidant defenses and contribute to cell wall reinforcement to deal with Cd toxicity

    Hispanic Latin America, Spain and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean: A rich source of reference material for public health, epidemiology and tropical medicine

    There is a multiplicity of journals originating in Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (SSLAC) in the health sciences of relevance to the fields of epidemiology and public health. While the subject matter of epidemiology in Spain shares many features with its neighbours in Western Europe, many aspects of epidemiology in Latin America are particular to that region. There are also distinctive theoretical and philosophical approaches to the study of epidemiology and public health arising from traditions such as the Latin American social medicine movement, of which there may be limited awareness. A number of online bibliographic databases are available which focus primarily on health sciences literature arising in Spain and Latin America, the most prominent being Literatura Latinoamericana en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS) and LATINDEX. Some such as LILACS also extensively index grey literature. As well as in Spanish, interfaces are provided in English and Portuguese. Abstracts of articles may also be provided in English with an increasing number of journals beginning to publish entire articles written in English. Free full text articles are becoming accessible, one of the most comprehensive sources being the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). There is thus an extensive range of literature originating in Spain and SSLAC freely identifiable and often accessible online, and with the potential to provide useful inputs to the study of epidemiology and public health provided that any reluctance to explore these resources can be overcome.     EpIG‐DB: A database of vascular epiphyte assemblages in the Neotropics

    Vascular epiphytes are a diverse and conspicuous component of biodiversity in tropical and subtropical forests. Yet, the patterns and drivers of epiphyte assemblages are poorly studied in comparison with soil‐rooted plants. Current knowledge about diversity patterns of epiphytes mainly stems from local studies or floristic inventories, but this information has not yet been integrated to allow a better understanding of large‐scale distribution patterns. EpIG‐DB, the first database on epiphyte assemblages at the continental scale, resulted from an exhaustive compilation of published and unpublished inventory data from the Neotropics. The current version of EpIG‐DB consists of 463,196 individual epiphytes from 3,005 species, which were collected from a total of 18,148 relevés (host trees and ‘understory’ plots). EpIG‐DB reports the occurrence of ‘true’ epiphytes, hemiepiphytes and nomadic vines, including information on their cover, abundance, frequency and biomass. Most records (97%) correspond to sampled host trees, 76% of them aggregated in forest plots. The data is stored in a TURBOVEG database using the most up‐to‐date checklist of vascular epiphytes. A total of 18 additional fields were created for the standardization of associated data commonly used in epiphyte ecology (e.g. by considering different sampling methods). EpIG‐DB currently covers six major biomes across the whole latitudinal range of epiphytes in the Neotropics but welcomes data globally. This novel database provides, for the first time, unique biodiversity data on epiphytes for the Neotropics and unified guidelines for future collection of epiphyte data. EpIG‐DB will allow exploration of new ways to study the community ecology and biogeography of vascular epiphytes

    Sexual Relationships in Hispanic Countries: a Literature Review

The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11930-020-00272-6Purpose of Review: Sexuality is a complex dimension for which culture seems to play an important role, particularly in countries that are more traditional. This review summarizes the knowledge about sexual relationships in Hispanic countries, considering sexual debut, attitudes, behaviors, and satisfaction. Recent Findings: In line with the literature reviewed, the sexual double standard seems to be continuing to influence sexual relationships. Some countries show more open expressions of sexuality based on the level of gender inequality or sexualized context, and within countries, variables such as religious commitment, family characteristics, and access to resources may play important roles in sexuality. Summary: Future research, policies, and interventions should consider these specific characteristics, including these forms of expression of sexuality, in the adjustment of cross-cultural and cross-national strategies

    Global maps of soil temperature

    Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world\u27s major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications

    A/ Introducir novedades sustanciales en el enfoque y presentación de determinados temas de Física y Química, buscando una forma de enseñanza más activa y cercana a los alumnos. B/ Contribuir a que el aprendizaje de estas disciplinas en los niveles de BUP y COU, se haga a traves del método experimental. C/ Poner en manos del profesorado un material elaborado que le permita realizar su labor docente con mayor exito. D/ Aportar trabajos originales que contribuyan a la innovación de la enseñanza de los temas vibraciones y ondas y equilibrio químico. A/ Tema 'equilibrio químico' del nivel iniciación: 68 alumnos de segundo de BUP del IB Ciudad de los poetas. B/ Tema 'vibraciones y ondas' del nivel iniciación: 100 alumnos de segundo de BUP del IB Emilia Pardo Bazán. C/ Tema 'vibraciones y ondas' del nivel ampliación: 39 alumnos de tercero de BUP del IB Conde de Orgaz. El proyecto consiste en el diseño de unos módulos de experiencias de Física y Química donde se trata de realizar la aplicación de diversos aspectos de los programas actuales por medio de trabajos experimentales. En las actividades que se proponen se diseñan y construyen, las experiencias correspondientes a los temas de Física, vibraciones y ondas; y de Química, equilibrio químico. Cada tema se compone de un esquema que incluye a su vez objetivos específicos, contenidos y actividades, un desarrollo y unas aplicaciones. Estos se desarrollan desde la perspectiva de un nivel medio, es decir, dirigido a alumnos cuyas edades oscilan entre los 14 y los 18 años. Las actividades específicas se gradúan para dos niveles; A/ Iniciación. B/ Ampliación. Al final se evalúan y exponen los resultados. Diagrama conceptual, esquemas, prueba escrita, test de evaluación del aprendizaje, test de evaluación del proyecto. Notas, porcentajes.
