Advertisements are so ubiquitous nowadays that capturing the addressee’s attention and maintaining it long enough for them to be fully processed have become fundamental objectives for advertisers. Employing specific strategies in the design of the advertisement contributes efficiently to achieving these goals, getting the audience not only to attend the stimulus but also to process it in certain ways favourable for the advertiser. We argue that Relevance theory, an approach to communication built on a massively modular view of cognition, offers the right tools to explain the nature of the interpretative processes in verbal comprehension. Knowledge of the relevance-based reflexive inferential procedures involved in utterance interpretation allows advertisers to foresee the addressee’s processing behaviour, giving them the possibility to control it in a such a way that the intended interpretative effects are achieved in the desired way

Design of VR app applied to cognitive training

L’objectiu principal d’aquest projecte és el disseny d’una aplicació de realitat virtual per millorar el tractament dels pacients amb deteriorament cognitiu lleu, així com estudiar els possibles avantatges que aquesta tecnologia pot proporcionar en aquest camp. Es va escollir la realitat virtual perquè permet augmentar la sensació d’immersió pel que fa a les tecnologies actuals. Actualment la realitat virtual s’està utilitzant amb aquest tipus de tractament i està aconseguint gran resultats amb els pacients. A més, mitjançant l’ús d’aquesta tècnica d’immersió visual, s’espera que ajudi a millorar la capacitat dels pacients davant nous problemes, com pot ser la iniciació a la realitat virtual, una qüestió fonamental que ajuda a la millora dels pacients que es troben en les primeres etapes de la malaltia. L’aplicació consisteix en un entorn de supermercat virtual on el pacient pot realitzar diverses proves. En aquesta hi haurà diferents nivells amb diverses complexitats, sempre després d’haver realitzat un tutorial previ. L’aplicació s’ha realitzat en dues fases diferents: primer es va crear el guió, amb col·laboració amb la unitat d’Alzheimer de l’Hospital Clínic. Els nivells de l’aplicació es van definir aquí. El següent va ser la realització de l’aplicació amb col·laboració amb la companyia Vysion 360. Per a la seva utilització per la unitat d’Alzheimer de l’Hospital Clínic, l’aplicació tenia que complir diferents criteris. En primer lloc, els nivells de dificultat tenen que ser suficients per realitzar un tractament a llarg termini. En segon lloc, per crear una bona experiència de immersió, l’entorn creat té que ser el més realista possible. Finalment, s’ha creat una base de dades local per guardar la informació de totes les sessions, utilitzat posteriorment en l’anàlisi de evolució dels pacients. Amb aquesta aplicació, s’espera que els resultats en els pacients amb deteriorament cognitiu lleu milloren respecte a les tècniques anteriors. Especialment gràcies a la gran experiència d’immersió aconseguida amb la realitat virtual, la qual ajuda a la concentració dels pacients durant el tractament

Building a Corpus of 2L English for Automatic Assessment: the CLEC Corpus

In this paper we describe the CLEC corpus, an ongoing project set up at the University of Cádiz with the purpose of building up a large corpus of English as a 2L classified according to CEFR proficiency levels and formed to train statistical models for automatic proficiency assessment. The goal of this corpus is twofold: on the one hand it will be used as a data resource for the development of automatic text classification systems and, on the other, it has been used as a means of teaching innovation techniques

El inconformismo del intelectual en los escritos periodísticos de José Jiménez Lozano (1956-1966)

Desde mediados de los años 50 a mediados de los 60, en plena dictadura de la censura franquista y en una sociedad cerrada culturalmente, los primeros escritos periodísticos de José Jiménez Lozano hablan de apertura y de rebeldía. Lo hacen a través de glosas a la función del intelectual a quien emplaza como al faro que guía a la sociedad. Responsabilidad suya es defender de las imposturas y abrir nuevos caminos al conocimiento. Se desgajan los rasgos que caracterizan su labor: valentía para someter a juicio critico lo que ocurre en su entorno y afrontar las consecuencias que de ello se derivan. El pensador ha de defenderse del peligro de renunciar al propio pensamiento, ya sea por la tentación de ceder a la frivolidad y a la superficialidad, bien sea por la imposición de un pensamiento ajeno. Si a él le corresponde esta tarea por excelencia, es en definitiva un quehacer de todo hombre se halla en total concordancia con los valores que propugna el cristianismo.During the 50's and 60's in the peak of the Franco Regime in a closed and highly censored society was when José Jiménez Lozano made his foray into journalism, his writings were charged with revolutionary ideas and progressiveness. His work revolved around the intellectual being the beacon to guide society to defend it from the manipulations of political ambitions and open new roads to knowledge. His own personal qualities were reflected in his articles, the courage he displayed to critically judge what was happening around him and face the consequences. He proposed that the intellectual has to defend himself against the danger of discarding his own intellect, whether its to fall into the temptation to play down ones own thoughts, or by applying or accepting the thoughts of somebody else. If its his obligation to perform this task then it is the definitive task of every man and is fully compatible with the values advocated by Christianity

Comparison of the crack pattern in accelerated corrosion tests and in finite elements simulations

In this work, the crack pattern obtained in accelerated corrosion tests is compared to the one obtained in numerical simulations for reinforced steel concrete samples. In the simulations, an expansive joint element is used to simulate the oxide layer behaviour together with finite elements with embedded adaptable cohesive crack to simulate the concrete fracture. In parallel, some samples are artificially corroded imposing constant current and after corrosion they are impregnated with resin containing fluorescein to improve the detection of the cracks. In the paper, the main features of the model and the experimental procedure are described and the crack pattern is analysed. A main crack across the concrete cover is easily seen in both cases, but also secondary cracks are observed after treating the concrete surface, in accordance with the model predictions, which gives further support to the ability of the numerical approach to simulate the real cracking processes
