    Kinematics of Clustering

The dynamical system for inertial particles in fluid flow has both attracting and repelling regions, the interplay of which can localize particles. In laminar flow experiments we find that particles, initially moving throughout the fluid domain, can undergo an instability and cluster into subdomains of the fluid when the flow Reynolds number exceeds a critical value that depends on particle and fluid inertia. We derive an expression for the instability boundary and for a universal curve that describes the clustering rate for all particles.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

Description In presenting to the trade our catalogue of furnaces, ranges, stoves, sinks, hollow ware, etc., etc., we desire to give you something which will be a help in ordering goods. We wish you to bear in mind the fact that a personal examination of the goods themselves will give you a better idea of the quality and workmanship of all goods of our manufacture, no matter how nearly perfect the illustrator\u27s art is. Pamphlet contains black and white illustrations of products, including stoves, furnaces, ranges, pots, pans, and more manufactured by the Noyes & Nutter Manufacturing Company of Bangor, Maine, at its foundry on Dutton Street in Bangor.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1188/thumbnail.jp

Deriving a systematic approach to changeable manufacturing system design

    Get PDF
It has long been argued that Factories are long life and complex products. The complexity of designing factories, and their underlying manufacturing systems, is further amplified when dealing with continuously changing customer demands. At the same time, due to research fragmentation, little if any scientific explanations are available supporting and exploiting the paradigm that "factories are products". In order to address this weakness, this paper presents research results arising from a comparative analysis of systematic "product design" and "manufacturing system design" approaches. The contribution emerging from this research is an integrated systematic design approach to changeable manufacturing systems, based on scientific concepts founded upon product design theories, and is explained through a case study in the paper. This research is part of collaboration between the CERU University of Malta and IAO Fraunhofer aimed at developing a digital decision support tool for planning changeable manufacturing systems.peer-reviewe

Democratizing Manufacturing: Bridging the Gap Between Invention and Manufacturing

Entrepreneurs and small firms in the U.S. face significant challenges as they scale up their innovations to volume production. Despite innovative new technologies such as 3D printers, the transition to cost-competitive, large-scale manufacturing can be difficult for domestic firms. To assist small U.S. companies to more effectively ramp up production, MForesight assembled more than 30 experts in manufacturing at a workshop on “Democratizing Manufacturing.” The goal of the workshop was to evaluate the gaps and barriers in technology and education that prevent the competitive design and production of engineered components by small businesses in the U.S. This effort is both timely and important because a large fraction of high-value products are now manufactured outside of the U.S. Companies in Europe and Asia are winning bids to manufacture products designed in the U.S. for a host of reasons, including a willingness on the part of their own governments to consistently invest in manufacturing (both infrastructure and human capital). To successfully compete in the global manufacturing marketplace, the U.S. needs to adopt new strategies for education, technology development, and industrial policy.National Science Foundation, Grant No. 1552534https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/145152/1/Democratizing-Manufacturing-Dec2016.pd
