The role of iron on the degradation and mineralization or organic compounds using conventional Fenton and photo-Fenton processes

The role of iron on the degradation of different organic compounds, differing in their structure (aliphatic versus aromatic) and iron complex formation capacity, by conventional and photo-Fenton processes was investigated. Results show that these chemical characteristics can affect the degree of treatment in terms of COD and TOC removals. While aromatics exhibited a fast and great reduction in the COD by the conventional Fenton process, aliphatic compounds, apart from acetic acid, required the presence of UV light to enhance treatment results. EDTA and oxalic acid responded very positively to UV irradiation in both COD removal and mineralization, reaching the highest values showed by aromatics; and results depended on the intensity of the UV light applied. Phenol and 4-nitrophenol responded favourably to UV irradiation in terms of mineralization and slightly in COD removal. Reductions in the COD were almost total (95.99%), while only an 80% of reduction in the TOC was achieved, for the best photo-Fenton treatment of oxalic acid, phenol and nitrophenol. 60% COD and 40% TOC removals were achieved correspondingly in the case of EDTA. Acetic acid showed almost no mineralization and low COD removal (≈20%) when treated by a conventional Fenton process; and did not enhanced results when assisting the treatment with UV light. Photo-regeneration of ferrous ion and photo-decarboxylation of iron carboxylates are assessed in the framework of these results

This work is the result of my university teaching experience using Web 2.0. resources. Using face-to-face teaching supported by a virtual teaching platform (Blackboard), general and specific competencies are evaluated by way of an electronic portfolio drawn by the student, who has opted to work on a blog, supported by the use of tools such as GoogleDocs, SlideShare or YouTube. The key elements of this experience and the corresponding advantages and drawbacks are collected and presented within the document

Charged and neutral current neutrino induced nucleon emission reactions

By means of a Monte Carlo cascade method, to account for the rescattering of the outgoing nucleon, we study the charged and neutral current inclusive one nucleon knockout reactions off nuclei induced by neutrinos. The nucleon emission process studied here is a clear signal for neutralcurrent neutrino driven reactions, and can be used in the analysis of future neutrino experiments.Nieves Pamplona,Juan Miguel, [email protected] ; Vicente Vacas, Manuel Jose, [email protected]

Neutrino induced weak pion production off the nucleon

We study neutrino-induced one-pion production off the nucleon in and around the Delta resonance region. A part from the Delta-pole mechanism we include background terms required by chiral symmetry. These background terms give size able contributions in all channels. To better reproduce the ANL q(2)-differential cross section data, we make a new fit of the C-5(A)(q(2)) axial nucleon to Delta form factor. The new result C-5(A)(0) = 0.867 +/- 0.075 is some 30% smaller than the commonly accepted value. This correction is compatible with most quark model estimates and a recent lattice calculation.(1

ICT and the creation of critical digital citizenship

This paper presents a theoretical review and reflection about the change in the concept of citizenship and its exercise in the digital society. The influence of ICT on the empowerment and participation of citizens has been analyzed. They have allowed the creation of digital social democracy, understood as the possibility of promoting collective participation in decision-making. The exercise of critical digital citizenship requires training, not only in technological aspects but also an adequate cultural and political formation that allows mature participation in the new media sociological framework. The work concludes with the proposal of a series of measures to favor this critical e-citizenship: the development of an adequate digital competence and training for the citizenship, establishing a plan of action in formal and non-formal education

Gurltia paralysans: a neglected parasite of domestic cats

    Get PDF
Gurltia paralysans (order Strongylida; family Angiostrongylidae) is a metastrongyloid parasite that causes chronic meningomyelitis in domestic cats in South America. The geographic distribution of G. paralysans includes rural and peri-urban areas of Chile and Argentina. However, feline gurltiosis has recently been reported in other South American countries, including Uruguay, Colombia, and Brazil, and was also recently reported in Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain). Feline gurltiosis is increasingly detected in domestic cats in southern Chile and its apparent geographic range is also increasing, together with an awareness of the disease among veterinarians. The life cycle of the parasite is unknown, but is probably indirect, involving gastropods as the intermediate host, as in other metastrongyloid nematode species. The clinical signs of G. paralysans infection include progressive pelvic limb ataxia, paraparesis, paraplegia, faecal or urinary incontinence, and/or tail paralysis. A definitive diagnosis of feline gurltiosis is still challenging and only possible with necropsy, when adult G. paralysans nematodes are detected within the spinal cord vasculature, together with macroscopic lesions, and characteristic morphological features. A semi-nested PCR method was recently developed for the in vivo diagnosis of this neglected parasite. Current treatment options include macrocyclic lactones and mylbemicn oxime, but the prognosis is poor in severe cases. In this article, we review G. paralysans infection in cats, focusing on the diagnosis shortcomings and the future directions of research into its biology and the associated neurological disease. Comprehensive updates on the epidemiology and clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of feline gurltiosis are provided
