The ozone flame
The Ozone flame structure is analyzed from the point of view of asymptotic methods, using the fact that the ratios of the characteristic times associated with the different reactions, which change with the flame temperature and therefore with the initial Ozone concentration, take values very large or very small compared with unity. A two-zone structure is found for the flame, with simplified forms of the reaction mechanism for each of the zones
specially in the water-stressed season, were the
insect could become a pest. Several studies reveal a
link between outbreak of bark beetles to the
occurrence of drought conditions, mainly attributed
to bark moisture content. The breeding program for
E. globulus developed by Grupo Empresarial ENCE
in Spain, need to include bark moisture content as a
criteria for clone selection, because its plantations
located in the Southwestern of Spain suffer the
attack of the insect. Clones have different
susceptibility to P. semipunctata attack due to
differences in drought resistance and/or in the
mechanisms to maintain high levels of bark moisture
content under water stress conditions. We studied
the influence of drought stress on bark moisture
content (periderm and phloem, separately) and its
relationships with some water relations parameters
in several E. globulus clones at a early age in field
plantations. Under water stress conditions, periderm
moisture content was higher in the more resistant
clones (>48%) while the others went down to 43-45
%. Differences among clones are larger from mid- to
late-Summer.
Nevertheless, at the beginning of the drought period
(i.e. mid-June in the South of Spain) clones showed
different responses in maintaining high levels of
periderm moisture content, being more susceptible
clones whose reduced moisture content under the
value of phloem moisture content. There was
evidence that, within bark, is the periderm moisture
content who plays a major role in the resistance of
eucalyptus against colonisation by the larvae.
Phloem moisture content was more related to other
water relations parameters (xylem water potential,
transpiration, soil water potential) than periderm
moisture content. To maintain a high level of
moisture content, the clones showed different
mechanisms to absorb and retain water during
summer: more insect resistant clones increased the
cell wall elasticity and/or the relative water content
at the turgor loss point, while clones whose
mechanisms of water content maintenance are
mainly based on osmotic adjustment reduced the
relative water content and increased soluble sugars
content, making them more vulnerable to the insect
Self-similar isentropic implosions
The self-similar compression of an isentropic spherical
gas pellet is analyzed for large values of the ratio of the
final to initial densities. An asymptotic analysis provides the solution corresponding to a prescribed value of the final density when it is high. In addition an approximate solution is given when the specific heat ratio, Y, is not constant. The time evolution of the pressure on the outer surface leading to the self-similar solution, is calculated for large density ratios
Cavitation in short bearings
In this note we obtain the boundaries of the cavitation bubbles when the Reynolds conditions are used to treat the problem of the cavitation, in short journal bearings and in mechanical face seals. A universal solution to this problem is presented in some detail, in the sense that the solution of an ordinary nonlinear first order differential equation, that is necessary to describe the downstream boundary of the cavity, only depends on the eccentricity ratio, but not on the cavitation incipience eccentricity
Implosiones autosemejantes isentrópicas y no isentrópicas
High-temperature mechanical behavior of polycrystalline yttrium-doped barium cerate perovskite
The high-temperature mechanical properties of the mixed ionic-electronic conductor perovskite BaCe0.95Y0.05O3-δ with average grain size of 0.40μm have been studied in compression between 1100 and 1300°C in air at different initial strain rates. The true stress-true strain curves display an initial stress drop, followed by an extended steady-state stage. As the temperature decreases and/or the strain rate increases, there is a transition to a damage-tolerant strain-softening stage and eventually to catastrophic failure. Analysis of mechanical and microstructural data revealed that grain boundary sliding is the primary deformation mechanism. The strength drop has been correlated with the growth of ultrafine grains during deformation, already present at grain boundaries and triple grain junctions in the as-fabricated material.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación MAT2009-13979-C03-0
Seed Dormancy and Seedling Ecophysiology Reveal the Ecological Amplitude of the Threatened Endemism Picris willkommii (Schultz Bip.) Nyman (Asteraceae)
Plant communities can undergo drastic changes in their composition if the ecosystem is
severely altered by human actions or climate change. These changes endanger any vulnerable species, mainly if it lives in a small area, as is the case of Picris willkommii (Schultz Bip.) Nyman. Therefore, it is essential to know how an ecosystem alteration could affect the seasonal pattern of the life
cycle, seed production, germination time, as well as both plant emergence and development. During
three consecutive years, the growth phenology and seed morpho-physiological traits of Picris
willkommii were assessed, as well as the environmental factors that affect them (light, temperature,
substrate). Under natural conditions, germination is in early autumn (15–25 °C air temperature),
flowering is in spring, and seed maturation in late spring. The species produces two types of seeds
differentiated in the degree of dormancy and other morpho–physiological traits, which contributes
to the dispersal and spreading capacity; it prefers fine-textured limestone substrates with high N
and P availability; it does not tolerate frosts below −5 °C; and it is able to acclimatize to changing
environmental conditions, but there is a risk of being replaced by other more aggressive species. All
of this is useful for species conservation programsThe authors want to thank the support of the Andalusian Government for
providing some batches of seeds and allowing the study of this species; and the support of Ricardo Arribas, the company Dintel Domus S.A. and the Ayamonte´s city council for the acquisition of
materials for experimentation and for their help in field trip
