The short summer of tourismphobia. Social movements and urban conflict in the neighborhood of Poblenou, Barcelona
The year 2017 could be considered, in Barcelona, as the year of tourismphobia. The
social and economic changes experienced by the city during the last decades have
been accompanied by a complex network of social movements closely linked to these
transformations, as well as their impacts. In the neighborhood of Poblenou, the diagnosis
made by #EnsPlantem, Neighbors in Danger of Extinction, points to the touristification as
one of its main challenges. Through an ethnographic approach of two years around this
platform, this article aims to show the role played by this type of movements around the
application of neoliberal contemporary urban policies linked to tourism
Neighbors in danger of extinction. Urban tourism, social movements and socio-spatial exclusion in Barcelona
Through an ethnographic approach to one movement of contestation to the touristification in
Poblenou, Barcelona, this article pursues two main objectives. On the one hand, to frame the actions of social
movements in urban contexts within the consideration of the city as fundamental part of the productive
sphere in capitalist societies. On the other hand, considering the reality of this former worker neighborhood,
to question that despite the emergence of increasingly consolidated dynamics of socio-spatial displacement,
these processes are not only because of the tourism but to a series of urban transformation projects developed
in the area for decades. The result of the research has been possible thanks to a fieldwork of almost one year

Tourism stands out as one of the most important urban promotion policies develop during the last decades. Under certain circumstances, tourism and gentrification may end up blurring, so that both processes are fed back on a continuous basis, accentuating some of their effects. The space production needs, but also the changes in the consumers of the same, suppose other of the common elements of both dynamics. Although located in different territorial areas, three neighborhoods in the cities of Palma de Mallorca, Berlin and Quito, maintain similar cases regarding the interrelation between tourism and gentrification and all have put in place measures aimed at controlling the most damaging impacts. Tourism stands out as one of the most important urban promotion policies develop during the last decades. El Perfil sísmico ALCUDIA: una imagen de la Zona Centroibérica (Varisco Ibérico meridional, España)
The 250 km long, vertical incidence seismic reflection profile ALCUDIA was acquired in spring 2007. It samples the Variscan Central Iberian Zone from Toledo to Fuenteovejuna. Its main goal was to continue the structure obtained for the crust and mantle from the IBERSEIS transect towards the N and NE. The acquisition parameters, similar to those used in the IBERSEIS profile have proven to be adequate to show a detailed image of the whole crust and upper mantle. After preliminary processing, the upper crust shows a moderate reflectivity that can be easily correlated with identifiable surface geologic features. The middle and lower part of the crust seems to be very reflective, laminated and afected by deformation, although to a different extent. The Moho is placed at approximately 10 s TWT and appears to be flat in the time section. The section can be divided into four domains of reflectivity that can be key to stablish different domains of crustal evolution. This new transect, together with the previous IBERSEIS profile, complete an almost 600 km long lithospheric section that crosses the southern half of the Iberian Variscides.
Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis
[Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality.
[Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years, and ≥ 80 years. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk.
[Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared, the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality.
[Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group
