    Reconstruction in Kentucky.

    Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. The dates 1862 to 1870 have been selected as the period of Reconstruction in Kentucky, because it was in 1862 that such a process was begun, and the State was practically free of military rule by 1870, and Kentuckians of both northern and southern sympathies, had by that time forgotten the old animosities of the past and were mingling freely as if nothing had ever separated them; both were admiring the bravery and gallantry of the other. For convenience this thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first subject to claim the attention of a student of Kentucky history during the period of reconstruction is military interference within the State, which nearly supplanted the civil authority for a period of almost three years. Therefore, the first chapter is concerned with Military Authority in Kentucky. Following close after the period of excessive military rule in the State, the activities of the Freedmen’s Bureau occupy the center of the stage, and a second chapter, and the largest, has been devoted to this institution. Many Kentuckians, angered over the conduct of affairs by the federal military officers in the State, organized themselves into secret bands of “Regulators”, and it has been thought wise to devote a chapter to such activities. The last chapter, on the “Politics of Reconstruction”, is an attempt to explain the changes in political complexion of the State during the period from 1862 to 1870, showing how Kentucky emerged from the struggle with an extremely union sentiment, and gradually changed to a thoroughly Democratic policy

    Low-dose intensive insulin therapy in patients with acute coronary syndrome accompanied by left ventricular failure: Audit of two UK hospitals

    Aims & Objectives: To determine whether a low-dose intravenous insulin regimen reduces blood glucose levels at a timely rate and associated side effects among patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome and Left Ventricular Failure. Background: Induced hypoglycaemia and the associated risks have questioned the benefits of intensive insulin therapy in patients presenting with raised blood glucose levels and Acute Coronary Syndromes. Local audit data identified that patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome and Left Ventricular Failure experienced more hypoglycaemic episodes than those with Acute Coronary Syndrome alone. Consequently, a new regimen of low-dose insulin for this group was implemented and audited over 12 months.Design: AuditMethods: 36 consecutive patient notes with a diagnosis of Acute Coronary Syndrome and blood glucose of ≄10 mmol/L treated with a new insulin therapy regimen were analysed. Data were extracted using a standardised form and entered into Excel spreadsheet for analysis.Results: The mean age of the sample was 70 years with 66% of subjects being men and 50% presenting with Acute Coronary Syndrome and Left Ventricular Failure. The low dose regimen was effective in achieving normoglycaemia, (range 4-8mmol/L) for a consecutive six hour period. This was achieved in 72% of patients and within a median time of 13 hours. Conclusion: The audit suggests that a low-dose insulin regimen can effectively stabilise blood glucose in patients presenting with both Acute Coronary Syndrome and Left Ventricular Failure. The importance of regularly monitoring blood sugar levels is vital and highlights the role of nurses in minimising patient risk and promoting safety.Relevance to practice: Nurses are instrumental in the safe implementation of intensive insulin guidelines. Close monitoring of patients is essential, enabling timely adjustments to treatments and ensuring patient safety. Regular audits allow nurses to evaluate care provision and continue to drive practice forward

    Fabrication Infrastructure to Enable Efficient Exploration and Utilization of Space

    Unlike past one-at-a-time mission approaches, system-of-systems infrastructures will be needed to enable ambitious scenarios for sustainable future space exploration and utilization. Fabrication infrastructure will be needed to support habitat structure development, tools and mechanical part fabrication, as well as repair and replacement of ground support and space mission hardware such as life support items, vehicle components and crew systems. The fabrication infrastructure will need the In Situ Fabrication and Repair (ISFR) element, which is working in conjunction with the In Situ Resources Utilization (ISRU) element, to live off the land. The ISFR Element supports the entire life cycle of Exploration by: reducing downtime due to failed components; decreasing risk to crew by recovering quickly from degraded operation of equipment; improving system functionality with advanced geometry capabilities; and enhancing mission safety by reducing assembly part counts of original designs where possible. This paper addresses the fabrication infrastructures that support efficient, affordable, reliable infrastructures for both space exploration systems and logistics; these infrastructures allow sustained, affordable and highly effective operations on the Moon, Mars and beyond

    Low-to-moderate nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations accelerate microbially driven litter breakdown rates

    Particulate organic matter (POM) processing is an important driver of aquatic ecosystem productivity that is sensitive to nutrient enrichment and drives ecosystem carbon (C) loss. Although studies of single concentrations of nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) have shown effects at relatively low concentrations, responses of litter breakdown rates along gradients of low‐to‐moderate N and P concentrations are needed to establish likely interdependent effects of dual N and P enrichment on baseline activity in stream ecosystems. We established 25 combinations of dissolved inorganic N (DIN; 55–545 ÎŒg/L) and soluble reactive P (SRP; 4–86 ÎŒg/L) concentrations with corresponding N:P molar ratios of 2–127 in experimental stream channels. We excluded macroinvertebrates, focusing on microbially driven breakdown of maple (Acer rubrum L.) and rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum L.) leaf litter. Breakdown rates, k, per day (d−1) and per degree‐day (dd−1), increased by up to 6× for maple and 12× for rhododendron over our N and P enrichment gradient compared to rates at low ambient N and P concentrations. The best models of k (d−1 and dd−1) included litter species identity and N and P concentrations; there was evidence for both additive and interactive effects of N and P. Models explaining variation in k dd−1 were supported by N and P for both maple and rhododendron ( = 0.67 and 0.33, respectively). Residuals in the relationship between k dd−1 and N concentration were largely explained by P, but residuals for k dd−1 and P concentration were less adequately explained by N. Breakdown rates were more closely related to nutrient concentrations than variables associated with measurements of two mechanistic parameters associated with C loss (fungal biomass and microbial respiration rate). We also determined the effects of nutrient addition on litter C : nutrient stoichiometry and found reductions in litter C:N and C:P along our experimental nutrient gradient. Our results indicate that microbially driven litter processing rates increase across low‐to‐moderate nutrient gradients that are now common throughout human‐modified landscapes

    Detrital stoichiometry as a critical nexus for the effects of streamwater nutrients on leaf litter breakdown rates

    Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations are elevated in many freshwater systems, stimulating breakdown rates of terrestrially derived plant litter; however, the relative importance of N and P in driving litter breakdown via microbial and detritivore processing are not fully understood. Here, we determined breakdown rates of two litter species, Acer rubrum (maple) and Rhododendron maximum (rhododendron), before (PRE) and during two years (YR1, YR2) of experimental N and P additions to five streams, and quantified the relative importance of hypothesized factors contributing to breakdown. Treatment streams received a gradient of P additions (low to high soluble reactive phosphorus [SRP]; ~10–85 ÎŒg/L) crossed with a gradient of N additions (high to low dissolved inorganic nitrogen [DIN]; ~472–96 ÎŒg/L) to achieve target molar N:P ratios ranging from 128 to 2. Litter breakdown rates increased above pre‐treatment levels by an average of 1.1–2.2× for maple, and 2.7–4.9× for rhododendron in YR1 and YR2. We used path analysis to compare fungal biomass, shredder biomass, litter stoichiometry (nutrient content as C:N or C:P), discharge, and streamwater temperature as predictors of breakdown rates and compared models containing streamwater N, P or N + P and litter C:N or C:P using model selection criteria. Litter breakdown rates were predicted equally with either streamwater N or P (R2 = 0.57). In models with N or P, fungal biomass, litter stoichiometry, discharge, and shredder biomass predicted breakdown rates; litter stoichiometry and fungal biomass were most important for model fit. However, N and P effects may have occurred via subtly different pathways. Litter N content increased with fungal biomass (N‐driven effects) and litter P content increased with streamwater P availability (P‐driven effects), presumably via P storage in fungal biomass. In either case, the effects of N and P through these pathways were associated with higher shredder biomass and breakdown rates. Our results suggest that N and P stimulate litter breakdown rates via mechanisms in which litter stoichiometry is an important nexus for associated microbial and detritivore effects

    The impact of greyscale inversion for nodule detection in an anthropomorphic chest phantom: a free-response observer study

    Objective: The aim of this work was to assess the impact of greyscale inversion on nodule detection on poster- oanterior chest X-ray images. Previous work has attemp- ted this, with no consensus opinion formed. We assessed the value of “fast-flicking” between standard and inverted display modes for nodule detection. Methods: Six consultant radiologists (with 5–32 years’ reporting experience) completed an observer task under the free-response paradigm. An anthropomorphic chest phantom was loaded with 50 different configurations of simulated nodules (1–4 nodules per case) measuring 5, 8, 10 and 12mm in spherical diameter; each configuration represented a single case. In addition, 25 cases contained no nodules. Images were displayed in three modes: (i) standard, (ii) inverted and (iii) fast-flicking between standard and inverted display modes. Each observer completed the study in a different order of display (i, ii, iii) using a calibrated 5-megapixel monitor. Nodules were localized with mouse clicks and ratings assigned using a 1–10 discrete slider-bar confidence scale. Rjafroc (Pitts- burgh, PA) was used for data analysis; differences in nodule detection performance were considered significant at 0.05. Results: The observer-averaged weighted jackknife alter- native free-response receiver-operating characteristic figures of merit were 0.715 (standard), 0.684 (inverted) and 0.717 (fast-flicking). Random-reader fixed-case anal- ysis revealed no statistically significant difference be- tween any treatment pair [F(2,8) 5 1.22; p 5 0.345]. Conclusion: No statistically significant difference in nodule detection was found for the three display conditions.
