    Get PDF
© 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The formability of ultra-fine grained stainless steel is investigated in micro hydromechanical deep drawing. The materials used are ultra-fine grained stainless steel and SUS304-H with thickness of 20 and 50 m. The micro cups are successfully fabricated for the ultra-fine grained stainless steel but it cannot be fabricated for SUS304-H with thickness of 20 m. The fracture type of ultra-fine grained stainless steel foil is the shortage of tensile strength at plain strain state and does not change with a decrease of the thickness. In contrast, the fracture type of SUS304-H foil changes to the bending deformation with decreasing the thickness due to its low ductility. The ultra-fine grained metal foil is required to obtain the high formability and fabricate the sharp micro cups

Synthesis of infinite-layer LaNiO2 films by metal-organic deposition

We report the synthesis of infinite-layer LaNiO2 thin films by metal organic decomposition. Our work is aimed to synthesize perovskite-like oxides with 3d9 electronic configuration, which is common to high-Tc copper oxides. The 3d9 configuration is very rare in oxides other than cuprates. Ni1+ oxides, even though Ni1+ is an unusual oxidation state, may be one of very few candidates. One example of the Ni1+ phases is infinite-layer LaNiO2. The bulk synthesis of LaNiO2 is difficult, but we demonstrate in this article that the thin-film synthesis of LaNiO2 by metal organic decomposition is rather easy. This is due to the advantage of thin films with a large-surface-to-volume ratio, which makes oxygen diffusion prompt. Resistivity measurements indicate that LaNiO2 is essentially a metal but unfortunately with no trace of superconductivity yet.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Geopantanal 2010

Experimental and numerical study of micro deep drawing

© 2015 Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences. Micro forming is a key technology for an industrial miniaturisation trend, and micro deep drawing (MDD) is a typical micro forming method. It has great advantages comparing to other micro manufacturing methods, such as net forming ability, mass production potential, high product quality and complex 3D metal products fabrication capacity. Meanwhile, it is facing difficulties, for example the so-called size effects, once scaled down to micro scale. To investigate and to solve the problems in MDD, a combined micro blanking-drawing machine is employed and an explicit-implicit micro deep drawing model with a voronoi blank model is developed. Through heat treatment different grain sizes can be obtained, which affect material's properties and, consequently, the drawing process parameters, as well as produced cups' quality. Further, a voronoi model can provide detailed material information in simulation, and numerical simulation results are in accordance with experimental results

Is Gliese 581d habitable? Some constraints from radiative-convective climate modeling

The recently discovered exoplanet Gl581d is extremely close to the outer edge of its system's habitable zone, which has led to much speculation on its possible climate. We have performed a range of simulations to assess whether, given simple combinations of chemically stable greenhouse gases, the planet could sustain liquid water on its surface. For best estimates of the surface gravity, surface albedo and cloud coverage, we find that less than 10 bars of CO2 is sufficient to maintain a global mean temperature above the melting point of water. Furthermore, even with the most conservative choices of these parameters, we calculate temperatures above the water melting point for CO2 partial pressures greater than about 40 bar. However, we note that as Gl581d is probably in a tidally resonant orbit, further simulations in 3D are required to test whether such atmospheric conditions are stable against the collapse of CO2 on the surface.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. Study of impurities in spin-Peierls systems including lattice relaxation

The effects of magnetic and non-magnetic impurities in spin-Peierls systems are investigated allowing for lattice relaxation and quantum fluctuations. We show that, in isolated chains, strong bonds form next to impurities, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. Generically, these solitonic excitations do not bind to impurities. However, interchain elastic coupling produces an attractive potential at the impurity site which can lead to the formation of bound states. In addition, we predict that small enough chain segments do not carry magnetic moments at the ends

Volcanic forcing improves Atmosphere-Ocean Coupled General Circulation Model scaling performance

Recent Atmosphere-Ocean Coupled General Circulation Model (AOGCM) simulations of the twentieth century climate, which account for anthropogenic and natural forcings, make it possible to study the origin of long-term temperature correlations found in the observed records. We study ensemble experiments performed with the NCAR PCM for 10 different historical scenarios, including no forcings, greenhouse gas, sulfate aerosol, ozone, solar, volcanic forcing and various combinations, such as it natural, anthropogenic and all forcings. We compare the scaling exponents characterizing the long-term correlations of the observed and simulated model data for 16 representative land stations and 16 sites in the Atlantic Ocean for these scenarios. We find that inclusion of volcanic forcing in the AOGCM considerably improves the PCM scaling behavior. The scenarios containing volcanic forcing are able to reproduce quite well the observed scaling exponents for the land with exponents around 0.65 independent of the station distance from the ocean. For the Atlantic Ocean, scenarios with the volcanic forcing slightly underestimate the observed persistence exhibiting an average exponent 0.74 instead of 0.85 for reconstructed data.Comment: 4 figure

The first year of Antarctic VLBI observations

    Get PDF
We are undertaking a series of geodetic VLBI observations between the Syowa Station 11-m antenna in Antarctica, and the 26-m antennas in Hobart Tasmania and Hartebeesthoek South Africa. These observations are the beginning of our campaign to monitor the motion and stability of the Antarctic plate. We describe here the results of the first year\u27s observations made during the southern summer and winter of 1998. Two mutually incompatible recording systems, K4 and S2, are used. The Mitaka FX Correlator was used to correlate these data. By using software called CALC3/MSOLV, the mean position of the antenna\u27s geodetic reference point was found to be X=1766194.152±0.006m, Y=1460410.923±0.005m and Z=- 5932273.329±0.015m at the epoch of 1998.9 in the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 2000 (ITRF2000) system. From a comparison with measurements made with other space geodetic techniques we estimate that our results have typical uncertainties of no more than 2 to 3cm in each coordinate

Approach to the semiconductor cavity QED in high-Q regimes with q-deformed boson

The high density Frenkel exciton which interacts with a single mode microcavity field is dealed with in the framework of the q-deformed boson. It is shown that the q-defomation of bosonic commutation relations is satisfied naturally by the exciton operators when the low density limit is deviated. An analytical expression of the physical spectrum for the exciton is given by using of the dressed states of the cavity field and the exciton. We also give the numerical study and compare the theoretical results with the experimental resultsComment: 6 pages, 2 figure
