The analysis of errors can be considered one of the most powerful tools of explanation. In additions, it is particularly apt within interactive teaching options. However, it is still largely uderutilised, which suggests the opportunity for further exploration of its potentialities. The current work focuses on its application with the purpose of facilitating and enhancing the understanding of basic and general chemistry concepts. The presentation of the approach is substantiated by the discussion of a considerable number of concrete examples

    Problematising Local Indigenous Community Research

    Get PDF
This book deliberates on developments related to Knowledge Pathing: Multi-, Inter- and Trans-Disciplining in Social Sciences. The book explores the value of this vexed concept in advancing the course for multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary perspectives, methodologies, theories and epistemologies of knowledge pathing. The discourse on knowledge pathing remains critical in advancing debates and dialogues in the humanities and social sciences spaces of research and studies. This book makes a significant contribution to the scholarly understanding of indigenous knowledge research by focusing on problematising local indigenous community research from Afro-sensed perspectives. The field of indigenous knowledge research and higher education in Africa is complex. Yet, across the continent, higher education has been the sector to least embrace Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) or regard indigenous science as a legitimate source of inspiration for the development of youth and local communities. Higher education institutions and local indigenous communities should thus generate knowledge and power through research. On the other hand, higher education researchers should use their research processes and skills for cross-beneficiation when engaging local indigenous communities. This book embodies the current discourse on decolonisation and the use of indigenous knowledge in research and is intended for research specialists in the field of indigenous knowledge systems

Language mastery, narrative abilities and oral expression abilities in chemistry learning: Importance of mother-tongue and traditional narration

    No full text
The importance of language and language mastery for science learning has been the object of extensive investigation in recent decades, leading to ample recognition. However, specific focus on the role of narrative abilities is still scarce. This work focuses on the relevance of narrative abilities for chemistry learning. Chemistry is an ideal area for the investigation of the role of language-related aspects in science learning, because it combines and integrates all the modes of expression that are relevant in the sciences: narrative, mathematical, and symbolic. The impact of inadequate narrative abilities on chemistry learning is illustrated through a number of concrete examples serving as experimental documentation. The discussion considers the synergism of the development of language mastery and the development of narrative abilities, and the deep connections of the latter with cultural heritage, also giving specific attention to the importance of oral narrative abilities. The benefits of the acquisition/enhancement of narrative abilities within traditional heritage are highlighted. It is concluded that the richness of African oral tradition and its closeness to the learners’ cultural heritage make it a powerful ground for such acquisition; in other words, an important cultural-heritage component becomes a ground to enrich learners’ equipment of intellectual instruments, thus enhancing their learning abilities in all areas

Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding and Conformational Preferences of Arzanol—An Antioxidant Acylphloroglucinol

    No full text
Arzanol is a naturally-occurring prenylated acylphloroglucinol isolated from Helichrysum italicum and exhibiting anti-oxidant, antibiotic and antiviral activities. The molecule contains an α-pyrone moiety attached to the phloroglucinol moiety through a methylene bridge. The presence of several hydrogen bond donor or acceptor sites makes intramolecular hydrogen bonding patterns the dominant stabilising factor. Conformers with all the possible different hydrogen bonding patterns were calculated at the HF/6-31G(d,p) and DFT/B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) levels with fully relaxed geometry in vacuo and in three solvents—chloroform, acetonitrile and water (these levels being chosen to enable comparisons with previous studies on acylphloroglucinols). Calculations in solution were performed with the Polarisable Continuum Model. The results show that the lowest energy conformers have the highest number of stronger intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding patterns on the other molecular properties is also analysed
