    Get PDF
Background: postoperative ventral hernia is one of the most common complications of surgery pertaining to the abdominal wall. Whether a hernia will occur depends on the size and location of the incision of the abdominal wall. Case study: We report a case of a 65 years old male patient who developed a large ventral hernia after right iliac bone and myocutaneous flap harvesting for reconstruction purposes after maxillectomy. The intraoperative find was a 40 cm wide hernia sack with a hernia neck 15 cm in diameter. The right iliac wing was the inferior border of the hernia neck. The patient underwent anterior ventral hernia repair with implantation of polypropylene mesh into the preperitoneal space. Conclusion: Placement of preperotoneal mesh in case of postoperative hernia reduces possibility of recurrence or infection

Resonant Cavity Enhanced Photodiodes in the Short-Wave Infrared for Spectroscopic Detection

    Get PDF
The design, fabrication and characterization of resonant cavity enhanced photodiodes for the short-wave infrared has been investigated. An InGaAsSb absorber and AlGaSb barrier were used in an nBn structure, within a Fabry-Perot cavity bounded by AlAsSb/GaSb DBR mirrors. The resonant cavity design produced a narrow response at 2.25 ÎŒm, with a FWHM of ∌ 26 nm and peak responsivity of 0.9 A/W. The photodiodes exhibited high specific detectivities and low leakage currents at 300 K - 5×10^10 cmHz^1/2W^−1 and 0.2 mAcm^−2 respectively, with an applied bias voltage of −100 mV. A maximum specific detectivity of 1×10^11 cmHz^1/2W^−1 was achieved at 275 K and the detector continued to perform well at high temperatures - at 350 K the peak specific detectivity was 3×10^9 cmHz^1/2W^−1. The narrow resonant response of these detectors make them suitable for spectroscopic sensing, demonstrated by measurements of glucose concentrations in water. Concentrations as low as 1 % were discriminated, limited only by the associated electronic systems

Transnational labor regulation, reification and commodification: A critical review

    Get PDF
Why does scholarship on transnational labor regulation (TLR) consistently fails to search for improvements in working conditions, and instead devotes itself to relentless efforts for identifying administrative processes, semantics, and amalgamations of stakeholders? This article critiques TLR from a pro-worker perspective, through the philosophical work of Georg LukĂĄcs, and the concepts of reification and commodification. A set of theoretically grounded criteria is developed and these are applied against selected contemporary cases of TLR. In the totality that is capitalism, reification of social relations of production conceals completely the experiences of workers. In TLR, managerialist and process-oriented scholarship is dominant, verifiable outcomes and positive improvements in conditions of employment are not sought, and worse, meaningless procedures are celebrated as positive achievements

Quasi-planar InGaAsSb p-B-n photodiodes for spectroscopic sensing

An InGaAsSb p-B-n structure has been designed and characterised for zero bias low power detection applications. Devices were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and fabricated into quasi-planar photodiodes with a 2.25 ÎŒm cut-off wavelength. Maximum responsivity was measured to be 1.05 A/W at 2.0 ÎŒm, achieved at zero bias. D* of 9.4×1010 Jones was determined from room temperature spectra of noise power measurements with calculated D* remaining >1×1010 Jones up to 380 K. With a view to simple miniaturised detection and measurement of low concentration biomarkers, optical powers down to 40 pW were detected, without temperature stabilisation or phase-sensitive detection, indicating the photodiode’s potential

The Paradox of Power in CSR: A Case Study on Implementation

    No full text
Purpose Although current literature assumes positive outcomes for stakeholders resulting from an increase in power associated with CSR, this research suggests that this increase can lead to conflict within organizations, resulting in almost complete inactivity on CSR. Methods A single in-depth case study, focusing on power as an embedded concept. Results Empirical evidence is used to demonstrate how some actors use CSR to improve their own positions within an organization. Resource dependence theory is used to highlight why this may be a more significant concern for CSR. Conclusions Increasing power for CSR has the potential to offer actors associated with it increased personal power, and thus can attract opportunistic actors with little interest in realizing the benefits of CSR for the company and its stakeholders. Thus power can be an impediment to furthering CSR strategy and activities at the individual and organizational level

The Promise and Perils of Private Voluntary Regulation: Labor Standards and Work Organization in Two Mexican Garment Factories

This paper is part of a larger project on globalization and labor standards organized by Professor Richard Locke of M.I.T.. In addition to the results presented in this paper (some of which appear as well in Monica Romis, "Beneath Corporate Codes of Conduct: What Drives Compliance in Two Mexican Garment Factories," (Masters Thesis, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, M.I.T., 2005)), the project entailed field research in China, Turkey, Europe and the United States as well as systematic analysis of Nike’s factory audits of working conditions in over 800 factories in 51 countries. What role can private voluntary regulation play in improving labor standards and working conditions in global supply chain factories? How does this system relate to and interact with other systems of labor regulation and work organization? This paper seeks to address these questions through a structured comparison of two factories supplying Nike, the world’s largest athletic footwear and apparel company. These two factories have many similarities - both are in Mexico, both are in the apparel industry, both produce more or less the same products for Nike (and other brands) and both are subject to the same code of conduct. On the surface, both factories appear to have similar employment (i.e., recruitment, training, remuneration) practices and they receive comparable scores when audited by Nike’s compliance staff. However, underlying (and somewhat obscured by) these apparent similarities, significant differences in actual labor conditions exist between these two factories. What drives these differences in working conditions? What does this imply for traditional systems of monitoring and codes of conduct? Field research conducted at these two factories reveals that beneath the code of conduct and various monitoring efforts aimed at enforcing it, workplace conditions and labor standards are shaped by very different patterns of work organization and human resource management policies
