Nurturing Urban Native American Families through Preschool Family Literacy Celebrations

    Get PDF
Most Native Americans (NAs ) live in urban settings [1]. Only half of indigenous ninth-grade students graduate with their non-native, same-age peers [2]. New and innovative approaches to teaching urban NAs to increase their graduation rates are urgently needed. One such innovative approach infuses cultural education into curriculum: young children from diverse Native Nations, many of whom have additional non-Native heritage, attend an experimental, urban Native Indian Centered Education (NICE) preschool in the Midwest. The preschool focuses on building and strengthening family literacy resources and developing family-school-community partnerships to strengthen literacy

Deterioration of willow seeds during storage

Willow (Salix spp.) seeds are able to tolerate desiccation, but differ from typical orthodox seeds in that they lose viability in a few days at room temperature, and in that the chloroplasts in embryo tissues do not dedifferentiate during maturation drying, thus retaining chlorophyll and maintaining intact their thylakoid membranes. In the present study, we investigated the damage generated in willow seeds during storage under appropriate conditions to exclude the eventual generation of reactive oxygen species by photooxidation. To this end, we measured different indicators of molecular damage, such as changes in the fatty acid profile, protein degradation, nuclease activities, and DNA damage, and evaluated normal germination and total germination in seeds stored for one, ten and sixteen years. We found: (i) a decrease in the fraction of unsaturated fatty acids; (ii) changes in the protein profile due to a decrease in protein solubility; (iii) activation of nucleases; and (iv) DNA fragmentation. Taken together, our findings identified programmed cell death as a key mechanism in seed deterioration during storage. We also found that, although the seeds maintained high percentages of total germination, the death program had already started in the seeds stored for ten years and was more advanced in those stored for sixteen years.Fil: Lopez Fernandez, Maria Paula. Parameter sensitivity of the WRF–LETKF system for assimilation of radar observations: Imperfect-model observing system simulation experiments

    Get PDF
Specification of suitable initial conditions to accurately forecast high-impact weather events associated with intense thunderstorms still poses a significant challenge for convective-scale forecasting. Radar data assimilation has been showing encouraging results to produce an accurate estimate of the state of the atmosphere at the mesoscale, as it combines high-spatiotemporal-resolution observations with convection-permitting numerical weather prediction models. However, many open questions remain regarding the configuration of state-of-the-art data assimilation systems at the mesoscale and their potential impact upon short-range weather forecasts. In this work, several observing system simulation experiments of a mesoscale convective system were performed to assess the sensitivity of the local ensemble transform Kalman filter to both relaxation-to-prior spread (RTPS) inflation and horizontal localization of the error covariance matrix. Realistic large-scale forcing and model errors have been taken into account in the simulation of reflectivity and Doppler velocity observations. Overall, the most accurate analyses in terms of RMSE were produced with a relatively small horizontal localization cutoff radius (;3.6–7.3 km) and large RTPS inflation parameter (;0.9–0.95). Additionally, the impact of horizontal localization on short-range ensemble forecast was larger compared to inflation, almost doubling the lead times up to which the effect of using a more accurate state to initialize the forecast persisted.Fil: Maldonado, Paula Soledad. Objectifying processes: The use of geometric morphometrics and multivariate analyses on Acheulean tools

Nowadays, the fruitful discussion regarding the morphological variability of handaxes during the Middle Pleistocene has reached a decisive moment with the use of more accurate statistical methods, such as geometric morphometrics (GM) and multivariate analyses (MA). This paper presents a preliminary methodological approach for checking the utility of these new approaches on the analysis of the tools’ shape. It goes beyond the simple description of morphology and isolates the variables which define the final morphology of a tool. We compared two Middle Pleistocene sites, Boxgrove and Swanscombe, which are morphologically very different. Then, we applied the GM analysis on 1) 2D images, with two semi-landmark distributions: 28 semi-landmarks, specially concentrated on the tip and butt, and 60 equally spaced points; and 2) on 3D models using new software (AGMT3-D Software) including 5000 semi-landmarks. The more points used to define the tool’s outline, the more accurate will be the interpretation of the variables affecting shape. On the other hand, if the semi-landmarks are localized on specific sectors of the tool, a bias is created, by concentrating on those sectors, rather than the general tool shape. The 3D models offer a new dimension on the shape analysis, as their results mean the combination of plan-shape, profile-shape and the tool’s topography

Derecho al trabajo digno de los recicladores y las recicladoras de oficio en Bogotá, Colombia

    Get PDF
In the framework of a capitalist society, permeated by consumption, it becomes relevant to reflect on how we manage the waste we generate. In the case of Colombia, the logic of burial in sanitary landfills has historically predominated, which directly affects the work of recyclers, who through their work reduce the amount of garbage that reaches these places. In the case of Bogotá Colombia, the work of the recycling population has been subject to the struggles generated by the trade to defend the right to work. This research sought to understand how recyclers are included in the context of changes in the city's sanitation system, and to question the existence of the right to decent work for this population.Trabajador(a) SocialPregrad

Early Serpukhovian conodonts from the Guadiato Area (Córdoba, Spain)

    Get PDF
The conodont assemblages of three stratigraphic sections from lower Serpukhovian rocks of the Guadiato Area (southwestern Spain) are composed of fifteen taxa, included in nine genera. Many of them are identified in open nomenclature due to the poor preservation of the specimens, of which most of them are fragmented, the presence of juvenile specimens, and the current controversy in the recognition of some multielement apparatuses. Generally, the faunas are not highly diversified and there is a low abundance of specimens in the horizons that yield conodonts. The assemblages include: Cavusgnathus navicula, Cavusgnathus cf. navicula, Gnathodus girtyi, of which two subspecies were identified, Gnathodus girtyi girtyi and Gnathodus girtyi meischneri, Hindeodontoides? sp., Hindeodus cristula, Idioprioniodus healdi, Idioprioniodus spp., Kladognathus macrodentata?, Kladognathus tenuis-complectens, Lochriea? sp., Mestognathus bipluti, Synclydognathus geminus, Synclydognathus spp. and many unidentifiable fragments
