Traumatic Stress as a Predictor of Suicidality

Suicide is a deliberate act of annihilation against one\u27s self due to a crisis of problem solving. Far too many youth are dying by their own hands resulting in suicide being the third leading cause of death for 10-19 year olds (CDC, 2005). Suicide is particularly problematic for adolescents due to the impulsivity inherent in adolescent development. Since 1980, the national suicide rate of African American youth has increased by 114 percent (CDC). Suicidality has been positively correlated with depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Kessler et al., 1999). Suicidality is more prevalent when a person experiences a tragic or traumatic event (SAMHSA, 2009). Traumatic stress is increasingly being experienced by students, especially those living in urban environments (Bell, 2007). Traumatic stress left untreated can cause numerous problems for a developing youth (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2006). The intention of this study was to determine whether traumatic stress more accurately predicts suicidality than major depression or posttraumatic stress disorder in urban high school students identified as possibly at risk for depression or suicide. An additional question that will be explored by this study will be whether the student is willing to participate in counseling services provided in the school setting. The data were archival and from the 2008-2009 school year. The sample was ninth grade students who scored as possibly at risk for depression or suicide on the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression. Binary logistic regression was the statistic used in this study. Traumatic stress appears to be a predictor of suicidality in urban ninth grade students possibly at risk for depression or suicide, over and above a major depressive episode or PTSD. The results of the analysis indicate that the majority of students, 75%, reported that they are willing to participate in school based counseling services

The ter-polymeric hydrogels of vinylacetate (VA), methacrylate (MA) and acrylicacid (AA) were prepared using ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross linker and benzoylperoxide (BPO) as an initiator. The effect of acrylic acid concentration on various swelling parameters was studied at different pHs (1.0, 4.0, 5.5, 7.4 and 8.0). A promising relationship was found to exist between media penetration velocity and equilibrium media content of hydrogels at all pH values for various concentration of acrylic acid. The fastest dynamic swelling was observed for the highest concentration of acrylic acid (40 mol % of AA) at pH 8.0. In the kinetic study, during the first hours, a first order kinetics (Fick Model) was observed at pH higher than the value of pKa (4.75) of acrylic acid, the hydrogels exhibiting non-Fickian diffusion mechanism. Whereas, for the acidic media pH, a second order kinetics was observed (Schott Model). Network parameters strongly support the swelling out comes. The relaxations of the ter-polymeric chain were observed after swelling at pH 8.0 via SEM pictures. Thermo gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetric analysis also agree with the above conclusions. Well controlled swelling behavior, network properties, SEM out comings and thermo-gravimetric analysis support the idea to use these hydrogels for targeted drug delivery in the colon part of the digestive tract

In this study we reported for the first time kinetics of exoglucanase (EXG) and endoglucanase (EG) from Aspergillus niger NRRL 567. The optimum pH and temperature for crude EXG and EG was found to be 3.5 and 30°C respectively. Zn2+, Ca2+, Mn2+ and Co2+ enhanced the crude activity of EXG and EG whereas Mg2+, Fe2+ and Hg2+ showed various degree of inhibitory effects. Cu2+ enhanced crude EXG activity and inhibited crude EG activity. The energy of activation (Ea) for the EXG and EG were 21.20 and 22.52 kJ mol-1, respectively. The Q10 values obtained for the EXG and EG were 1.38 and 1.4, respectively. These enzymes had lower Km value that shows their high affinity for the substrates. Overall, the studies demonstrate that these enzymes may be suitable for industrial use.Key words: Exoglucanase, endoglucanase, kinetics, characterization, Aspergillus niger NRRL 567

Interactive Cultural Experiences using Virtual Identities

People create meaning through narratives or stories. Every culture has stories that are passed along from generation to generation. Culture influences our perspectives, values and behaviour. The story metaphor has been used in Multimedia and Virtual Environments to create interactive stories. Interactive stories enable users to interactively explore the story world and to be actively involved in the outcome of the story. Virtual environments are much richer in terms of freedom of navigation and ease of interaction. Projection-based systems in particular, don’t bind the user to a predefined path and enables the user to have a hands-on experience through immersion and interaction with the virtual world. Our approach for authoring interactive stories in virtual cultural environments allows the creation of several virtual identities, through whose eyes the user perceives the virtual world. Each identity is empowered with knowledge about itself and its perception about and embodiment in the virtual world. This approach allows free interaction and navigation that is appropriate for the specific virtual identity in the culture that is being experienced. This enables the user to experience the culture from many different angles and to get a true reflection and cultural experience
