Dietary Diversity in Cambodian Garment Workers: The Role of Free Lunch Provision

The objective of this paper is to compare food consumption by Cambodian garment workers with and without access to a free model lunch provision through a factory-based canteen. Data from an exploratory randomised controlled trial were analysed. In total, 223 female Cambodian garment workers were allocated to an intervention arm (six-month lunch provision) or a control arm. Dietary intake on workdays was assessed by qualitative 24-h recalls at baseline and twice at follow-ups during the period of lunch provision using the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) guideline on assessing women´s dietary diversity. In total, 158 participants provided complete data on the dietary intake over workdays at all interviews. Lunch provision resulted in a more frequent consumption of dark green leafy vegetables (DGLV), vitamin A-rich fruits, other fruits, and oils and fats during lunch breaks. In contrast, flesh meats, legumes, nuts and seeds, as well as sweets, were eaten at a lower frequency. Except for a higher consumption rate of vitamin A-rich fruits and a lower intake frequency of sweets, lunch provision had a less clear impact on total 24-h intake from different food groups and was not associated with a higher women´s dietary diversity score (WDDS). A more gap-oriented design of the lunch sets taking into account underutilised foods and the nutritional status of the workers is recommended

Odniesienia intertekstualne obecne w tłumaczeniu dramatu Ślub Witolda Gombrowicza na język kaszubski w świetle badań komparatystycznych

This article is devoted to the issue of intertextuality in the translation of Witold Gombrowicz’s drama The Marriage into the Kashubian language considered on the ground of comparative researches. The analysis includes intertextual relationships founded on the basic relationship between the original and the translation, consisting of intensification or weakening of familiarity and strangeness elements. In particular it consists of intertextuality at the level of polysemy, intertextuality at the level of metaphor and intertextuality at the level of indicators of text organisation. The latter category includes problems with the reflection of the local dialect style, spelling and rhymes experiments which were all present in the original of the drama. It was not always possible to reflect the language experiments conducted by Witold Gombrowicz in the translation into the Kashubian language, even though it was a translation into a closely related language

Wpływy składniowe gwar kaszubskich na lokalną mówioną polszczyznę

Syntactic influences of Kashubian dialects on local Polish speechThis article is the result of field research conducted in the Kashubian language area. The analysis of the Polish texts acquired during the research showed that on the syntactic plane there is an interference of the Kashubian dialects in the Polish language. As a result of the Kashubian dialects’ impact on spoken Polish, the following phenomena were revealed in the informants’ statements: changes in verb government, the use of prepositions characteristic of Kashubian, and the influence of Kashubian-specificuse of conjunction indicators. However, it is uncertain whether the use of genetivus partitivus, the frequent repetition of the subject, and the frequent use of the attributive expressed by an indicating pronoun, can be considered as interferences of Kashubian dialects in the Polish language because these features are also characteristic of everyday Polish. Wpływy składniowe gwar kaszubskich na lokalną mówioną polszczyznęNiniejszy artykuł jest wynikiem badań terenowych przeprowadzonych na kaszubskim obszarze językowym. The article discusses the methods used to translate phrasemes in the Kashubian version of the book Baśnie. Brawãdë by Jan Drzeżdżon. The translator, Roman Drzeżdżon, was unable to find any equivalent phrasemes in the target language. He translated them literally or described their meaning. The Grammar of the Kashubian Language – recognition and description of the structure of the contemporary Kashubian. Response to criticism The article is a response to criticism of Hanna Makurat’s book titled The Grammar of the Kashubian Language; the book, published in 2016, is the first normative description of contemporary Kashubian. The Kashubian newspaper Skra has published a review which questioned the substantive content of the entire book. The author of the review showed incompatibilities between the book and Friedrich Lorentz’s Pomeranian Grammar, which was published in 1927–1937. However, the reviewer did not take into account the fact that Lorentz described the system of 76 Kashubian dialects, while Hanna Makurat described the system of contemporary Kashubian literary language, which evolved and developed standard forms. What is more, this review, written by an amateur, became the basis for the publication by the Kashubian Language Council of the statement – not supported by any arguments – that Hanna Makurat’s book was not a normative grammar. Kashubian and Polish cultures are not completely separate from each other. Despite intermingling of these two cultures, it can be argued that the translator of literary texts from Polish to Kashubian is, to a certain extent, a go-between for both cultures, and it will not be a problem – for him or her – to give a name to Polish realities which are known to the Kashubians and the Kashubian language. Cultural elements that might be problematic for a Kashubian translator are phraseological units specific for the Polish culture and realities of exotic cultures described in Polish literary texts.Kultura kaszubska nie jest zupełnie odrębna od polskiej.
