Towards Diagram Understanding: A Pilot Study Measuring Cognitive Workload Through Eye-Tracking
We investigate model understanding, in particular , how the quality of the UML diagram layout impacts cognitive load. We hypothesize that this w ill have a significant impact on the structure and effectiveness of engineersâ communication. In previous work, we have studied task performance measurements and subjective assessments; here, we also investigate behavioral indicators such as fixation and pupillary dilation. We use such indicators to explore diagram understanding- and reading strategies and how such strategies are impacted, e.g. by diagram type and expertise level. In the pilot eye-tracking experiment run so far, we have only examined a small number of participants (n=4), so our results are preliminary in nature and do not afford far reaching conclusions. They do, however, corroborate findings from earlier experiments, for example, showing that layout quality indeed matters and improves understanding. Our results also give rise to a number of new hypotheses about diagram understanding strategies that we are investigating in an ongoing data acquisition campaign
SPHERES, J\"ulich's High-Flux Neutron Backscattering Spectrometer at FRM II
SPHERES (SPectrometer with High Energy RESolution) is a third-generation
neutron backscattering spectrometer, located at the 20 MW German neutron source
FRM II and operated by the Juelich Centre for Neutron Science. It offers an
energy resolution (fwhm) better than 0.65 micro-eV, a dynamic range of +-31
micro-eV, and a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 1750:1.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Supplemental material consists of 3

Nanoscopic Study of the Ion Dynamics in a LiAlSiO Glass Ceramic by means of Electrostatic Force Spectroscopy
We use time-domain electrostatic force spectroscopy (TD-EFS) for
characterising the dynamics of mobile ions in a partially crystallised
LiAlSiO glass ceramic, and we compare the results of the TD-EFS
measurements to macroscopic electrical conductivity measurements. While the
macroscopic conductivity spectra are determined by a single dynamic process
with an activation energy of 0.72 eV, the TD-EFS measurements provide
information about two distinct relaxation processes with different activation
energies. Our results indicate that the faster process is due to ionic
movements in the glassy phase and at the glass-crystal interfaces, while the
slower process is caused by ionic movements in the crystallites. The spatially
varying electrical relaxation strengths of the fast and of the slow process
provide information about the nano- and mesoscale structure of the glass
ceramic.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
A TNF Receptor 2 Selective Agonist Rescues Human Neurons from Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) plays a dual role in neurodegenerative diseases. Whereas TNF receptor (TNFR) 1 is predominantly associated with neurodegeneration, TNFR2 is involved in tissue regeneration and neuroprotection. Accordingly, the availability of TNFR2-selective agonists could allow the development of new therapeutic treatments of neurodegenerative diseases. We constructed a soluble, human TNFR2 agonist (TNC-scTNFR2) by genetic fusion of the trimerization domain of tenascin C to a TNFR2-selective single-chain TNF molecule, which is comprised of three TNF domains connected by short peptide linkers. TNC-scTNFR2 specifically activated TNFR2 and possessed membrane-TNF mimetic activity, resulting in TNFR2 signaling complex formation and activation of downstream signaling pathways. Protection from neurodegeneration was assessed using the human dopaminergic neuronal cell line LUHMES. First we show that TNC-scTNFR2 interfered with cell death pathways subsequent to H2O2 exposure. Protection from cell death was dependent on TNFR2 activation of the PI3K-PKB/Akt pathway, evident from restoration of H2O2 sensitivity in the presence of PI3K inhibitor LY294002. Second, in an in vitro model of Parkinson disease, TNC-scTNFR2 rescues neurons after induction of cell death by 6-OHDA. Since TNFR2 is not only promoting anti-apoptotic responses but also plays an important role in tissue regeneration, activation of TNFR2 signaling by TNC-scTNFR2 appears a promising strategy to ameliorate neurodegenerative processes
Benchmarking a DEMâCFD Model of an Optical Belt Sorter by Experimental Comparison
A DEM-CFD (discrete element method - computational fluid dynamics) model of an optical belt sorter was extensively compared with experiments of a laboratory-scale sorter to assess the model\u27s accuracy. Brick and sand-lime brick were considered as materials. First, the transport characteristics on the conveyor belt, involving mass flow, lateral particle distribution and proximity, were compared. Second, sorting results were benchmarked for varying mixture proportions at differing mass flows. It was found that the numerical model is able to reproduce the experimental results with high accuracy
Biocatalytic production of adiponitrile and related aliphatic linear α,Ï-dinitriles
Betke T, Maier M, Gruber-Wölfler H, Gröger H. Biocatalytic production of adiponitrile and related aliphatic linear α,Ï-dinitriles. Nature Communications. 2018;9(1): 5112.Linear α,Ï-dinitriles are important precursors for the polymer industry. Most prominently, adiponitrile is produced on an annual scale of ca. 1 million tons. However, a drawback of todayâs dominating process is the need for large amounts of highly toxic hydrogen cyanide. In this contribution, an alternative approach towards such linear dinitriles is presented based on dehydration of readily available α,Ï-dialdoximes at ambient conditions by means of aldoxime dehydratases. In contrast to existing production routes this biocatalytic route enables a highly regio- and chemoselective approach towards dinitriles without the use of hydrogen cyanide or harsh reaction conditions. In addition, a selective synthesis of adiponitrile with substrate loadings of up to 100âg/L and high yields of up to 80% was achieved. Furthermore, a lab scale process on liter scale leading toâ>â99% conversion at 50âg/L underlines the potential and robustness of this method for technical applicability
Machine learning based multiobject tracking for sensor based sorting
Sensor-based sorting provides state-of-the-art solutions for sorting of granular materials. Current systems useline-scanning sensors, which yields a single observation of each object only and no information about their movement. Recent works show that using an area-scan camera bears the potential to decrease both the error in characterization and separation. Using a multiobject tracking system, this enables an estimate of the followed paths as well as the parametrization of an individual motion model per object. While previous works focus on physically-motivated motion models, it has been shown that state-of-the-art machine learning methods achieve an increased
prediction accuracy. In this paper, we present the development of a neural network-based multiobject tracking system and its integration into a laboratory-scale sorting system. Preliminary results show that the novel system achieves results comparable to a highly optimized Kalman filter-based one. A benefit lies in avoiding tiresome manual tuning of parameters of the motion model, as the novel approach allows learning its parameters by provided examples due to its data-driven nature
