A global perspective on non-autochthonous canine and feline Leishmania infection and leishmaniosis in the 21st century

Leishmaniosis is a high-burden vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania parasites that affect humans and other animals, including dogs and cats. Globalization is one of the main factors that largely contributes to the spread of leishmaniosis to non-endemic areas. A comprehensive review of scientific literature published between 2000 and 2021 was conducted to identify the epidemiological situation and clinical management of imported animal Leishmania infection and leishmaniosis as a fundamental step to better manage individual cases and traveler animal health from a global and One Health perspective. A total of 31 articles were selected, representing 1403 canine, and 25 feline imported cases. Canine and feline leishmanioses in non-endemic areas remain a challenge for veterinarians. Thus, diagnostic and management algorithms for veterinary clinical decision support are proposed. Increased surveillance of non-autochthonous cases, including relocated companion animals, could improve individual health, and mitigate the public and animal health risk of introducing Leishmania species into new areas.publishersversionpublishe

A framework for the development of biomedical text mining software tools

Over the last few years, a growing number of techniques has been successfully proposed to tackle diverse challenges in the Biomedical Text Mining (BioTM) arena. However, the set of available software tools to researchers has not grown in a similar way. This work makes a contribution to close this gap, proposing a framework to ease the development of user-friendly and interoperable applications in this field, based on a set of available modular components. These modules can be connected in diverse ways to create applications that fit distinct user roles. Also, developers of new algorithms have a framework that allows them to easily integrate their implementations with state-of-the-art BioTM software for related tasks. This work was supported in part by the research projects recSysBio (ref. [Excerpt] Biomedical Text Mining. i.e., the field that deals with the automatic: retrieval and processing of biomedical literature, is perhaps one of today's most promising research fields. The automated processing of free text is not exactly a new computational issue. Text Mining has a long experience in the retrieval and processing of general text. The development of search engines and indexed directories, the compilation of dictionaries and the automatic translation of documents have impelled the development of powerful text processing techniques. Nevertheless, biomedical texts present additional challenges: the terminology does not always follows standard nomenclatures; new terms are constantly emerging; and term homonymy and synonymy (including term variants and abbreviations) make it very difficult to accurately identify entities. Methods used to estimate the soil microbial activity are important to environmental monitoring of degraded areas. The objective of this research was to investigate the microbial activity of a semiarid soil cultivated with Atriplex nummularia Lindl. in a field receiving saline waste during one and three years, in comparison with an area without crop and irrigation. Soil cultivated during three years presented, during the dry season, values of pH, CE, and activity of FDA hydrolyses higher than those registered in other areas. However, a negative correlation between the microbial carbon and values of qCO2 was observed. The microbial biomass and the alkaline phosphates were also higher in the three years cultivated soil, in comparison with the native soil, non irrigated, confirming the role of halophytes for enhancing quality of soils under saline stress. Thus, the cultivation of A. nummularia is an alternative for using saline waste from the desalinization process

The aim was to report the care of a patient with possible psychiatric disorders and a history of suicide attempts, in addition to evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic methods that can be used. Thus, this is a descriptive, critical-reflective and qualitative study, of the experience report type, carried out in a philanthropic hospital in the city of Caratinga, in the State of Minas Gerais. Data were collected through anamnesis and medical records of a 39-year-old female patient with major depression and bipolar affective disorder, with a history of several attempts at self-extermination. In this sense, the importance of an adequate diagnosis was evidenced in order to improve the patient's quality of life, as well as to avoid failures that harm her psychic condition. In addition, it was identified as essential the follow-up of a professional in the area who can offer appropriate support for the multiple psychiatric disorders reported.
