    Regulatory Competition and the Market for Corporate Law

    This article develops an empirical model of firms’ choice of corporate laws under inertia. Delaware dominates the incorporation market, though recently Nevada, a state whose laws are highly protective of managers, has acquired a sizable market share. Using a novel database of incorporation decisions from 1995- 2013, we show that most firms dislike protectionist laws, such as anti-takeover statutes and liability protections for officers, and that Nevada’s rise is due to the preferences of small firms.Our estimates indicate that despite inertia, Delaware would lose significant market share and revenues if it adopted protectionist laws. Our findings support the hypothesis that Delaware faces competitive pressure to maintain its current laws, and that managers are willing to commit to such laws in order to attract capital

    Ecosystem restoration and community involvement in the Whangamarino Wetlands of New Zealand

    Ecosystem restoration is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem. The community’s role in restoration projects is key. Good restoration includes social and cultural goals determined by stakeholders’ perspectives, making it process-oriented. The idea of using this process both in academia and practice is growing worldwide, and numerous restoration projects have been implemented. However, a gap between research and practice has emerged. There is a lack of a across-site theory that can be relevant to different sites. Using data acquired through the application of the process-oriented framework to the Whangamarino Wetland Restoration Project of New Zealand, the research aims to contribute to the research/practice discussion. It builds a process-oriented theoretical framework collected through literature reviews. It relies on two core concepts, decision-making and cultural significance. Data was collected through qualitative interviews with DoC staff in Whangamarino. The results show that community involvement relies on agency. The objective of the project is to inform larger scale wetland restoration through learning. The Restoration Project is process-oriented to a certain degree

    Stocking density and its influence on the productivity of red cusk eel, Genypterus chilensis (Guichenot, 1848), in shallow raceways

    We compared the growth properties of red cusk eel Genypterus chilensis with initial mean weight ± standard error, 106.2 ± 6.1 g reared in shallow raceways at three different stocking densities (28.5, 46.1, and 60.7 kg m-3) in a 226-day long growth trial at a constant temperature of 17°C. There was a trend towards higher specific growth rates at the highest density. Final mean weights were 333 ± 12, 352 ± 12, and 354 ± 15 g, at the 30, 45, and 60 kg m-3 density, respectively. Overall, the growth rates were higher in the 60 kg m-3 density group than the two other density groups. The daily feeding intake (%) was higher in the medium (0.51), and high (0.55) density groups compared the low-density group (0.45). Feed conversion efficiency (FCE) did not differ between the density groups. A significant size rank correlation was maintained in all density groups throughout the study. Calculated productivity increased almost linearly with increasing stocking density and was found to be 32, 34, and 39 g m-2 d-1 at 30, 45, and 60 kg m-3, respectively. The results show that the optimum density conditions for farming juvenile red cusk eel, both concerning growth rate, feed conversion, and productivity is at densities equal to or higher than 60 kg m-3.publishedVersio

Moreover, the levels of hs-CRP in suicide attempters were not related to background or psychopathological characteristics, nor to the methods of suicide attempt. Our matched case-control study confirms previous observations of high levels of the inflammation marker hs-CRP in patients who have attempted suicide, irrespective of their underlying type and levels of psychopathology.Peer reviewe

    Evidence of language-related left hypofrontality in Major Depression: An EEG Beta band study

    Major depression (MDD) has been associated with an altered EEG frontal asymmetry measured in resting state; nevertheless, this association has showed a weak consistency across studies. In the present study, which starts from an evolutionistic view of psychiatric disorders, we investigated frontal asymmetry in MDD, using language as a probe to test the integrity of large inter- and intra-hemispheric networks and processes. Thirty MDD patients (22 women) and 32 matched controls (HC) were recruited for an EEG recording in resting state and during two linguistic tasks, phonological and semantic. Normalized alpha and beta EEG spectral bands were measured across all three conditions in the two groups. EEG alpha amplitude showed no hemispheric asymmetry, regardless of group, both at rest and during linguistic tasks. During resting state, analysis of EEG beta revealed a lack of hemispheric asymmetry in both groups, but during linguistic tasks, HC exhibited the typical greater left frontal beta activation, whereas MDD patients showed a lack of frontal asymmetry and a significantly lower activation of left frontal sites. In depressed patients, positive affect was negatively correlated with depression levels and positively correlated with left frontal EEG beta amplitude. Language represents the human process that requires the largest level of integration between and within the hemispheres; thus, language asymmetry was a valid probe to test the left frontal alteration encompassing highly impairing psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and MDD. Indeed, these severe diseases are marked by delusions, ruminations, thought disorders, and hallucinations, all of which have a clear linguistic or metalinguistic basis

    Comparison of Acute and Late Toxicity of Two Regimens of 3- and 5-Week Concomitant Boost Prone IMRT to Standard 6-Week Breast Radiotherapy

    Purpose: Limited information is available comparing toxicity of accelerated radiotherapy (RT) to that of standard fractionation RT for early stage breast cancer. We report early and late toxicities of two prone regimens of accelerated intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with a concomitant boost (CB) to the tumor bed delivered over 3 or 5 weeks as compared to standard 6 week RT with a sequential electron boost. Methods: From 2/2003 to 12/2007, 169 consecutive patients with Stage I–II breast cancer were offered the choice to undergo prone RT with either: a 6-week standard RT regimen of 46 Gy/23 fractions (fx) to the whole breast (WB), followed by a14 Gy sequential boost (SB) to the tumor bed (6wSB), a 5-week regimen of 50 Gy to WB with an IMRT CB of 6.25 Gy in 25 fx (5wCB); or a 3-week protocol of 40.5 Gy to WB with an IMRT CB of 7.5 Gy in 15 fx (3wCB). These regimens were estimated as biologically equivalent, based on alpha/beta = 4 for tumor control. Toxicities were reported using RTOG and LENT/SOMA scoring. Results: 51/169 patients chose standard 6wSB, 28 selected 5wCB, and 90 enrolled in 3wCB protocol. Maximum acute toxicity was Grade 3 dermatitis in 4% of the patients in the 6wSB compared 1% in 3wCB. In general, acute complications (breast pain, fatigue, and dermatitis) were significantly less in the 3wCB than in the other schedules (P < 0.05). With a median follow-up of 61 months, the only Grade 3 late toxicity was telangiectasia in two patients: one in 3wCB and one in 5wCB group. Notably, fibrosis was comparable among the three groups (P = NS). Conclusion: These preliminary data suggest that accelerated regimens of breast RT over 3 or 5 weeks in the prone position, with an IMRT tumor bed CB, result in comparable late toxicity to standard fractionation with a sequential tumor boost delivered over 6 weeks. As predicted by radiobiological modeling the shorter regimen was associated with less acute effects

    Towards the realisation of a fully integrated Interactive Computer Music System (ICMS), adopting Transformative Expressive Dimensions

    The principal aim of conducting this research project is to advance the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) in music through the inception of new and exciting ideas relating to the conceptual and aesthetic values and characteristics associated with interactive computer music system (ICMS) design, development and implementation. This exploratory investigation has been carried out through the continued development of a unique screen-based ICMS, ScreenPlay, which brings together aspects of many prominent, pre-existing system design models along with other novel inclusions, such as the capability of operating as both a multi-user-and-computer collaborative, improvisatory interactive performance system and a single-user-and-computer studio compositional tool for Ableton Live, and the implementation of Markovian generative and topic-theory-inspired transformative algorithms to provide new ways of breaking routine in collaborative improvisation and generating new musical ideas in composition, as well as providing new dimensions of expressivity. The intention being that the culmination of these efforts should be the establishment of a system design model that offers the user(s)/performer(s) a significantly more engaging, intuitive and complete interactive musical experience than that afforded by any currently available system. This is not an objective that should be perceived as being born of arrogance or ignorance; many established and commercially successful ICMSs provide users with amazing and unique experiences, and the value of their contribution to the field of HCI in music is not to be underestimated or taken for granted. However, for all the relative strengths and possibilities of interacting with these systems, there is potential for improvement and evolution in equal measure. This is largely due to the tendency of ICMS developers to focus (sometimes almost exclusively) on providing the best possible experience when engaging with a system only with regard to a single parameter/characteristic of the musical output at the expense of providing depth-in-control at any level over some or any of the many other parameters/characteristics available. It is necessary for all forms of technology and art to continually improve and evolve beyond what has already been achieved in order to avoid extinction, and nowhere is this more apparent than within an innovative and niche field of research such as HCI in music
