This dissertation is based on complete piano works by the composer Ricardo Tacuchian (1939). These pieces are divided into three phases - National phase (1960s), experimental phase (1970s), and postmodern phase (since 80 to present days). The main objectives of the dissertation are: (1) contribute to bibliography of twentieth and twenty-first century music (2) promote contemporary Brazilian music and (3) focus on these piano pieces, emphasizing structural and interpretative aspects to demonstrate a direct relationship between analysis and performance. Moreover, it addresses aspects related to tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture and structure. By utilization of various analythical techniques, the author illustrates the significance of each piece, formulating suggestions, and essential questions related to the performance. The methodology also treats aspects related to the pianistic preparation for the performance of each piece, and provides an analysis of materials, composition techniques employed, and how these elements are explored. Furthermore, a narrative process, establishes a rational solutions to solve features related to performance. Annexed to the text are an article on the T-system written by the composer himself, a glossary of underlined terms in the dissertation, and original English versions divided into chapters. The bibliography consists ofmateriaIs related to contemporary Brazilian music, musical analysis (materials and composition techniques), musical performance, and bibliographical materials related to the composer. The conclusion identifies the unifying elements of each piece, originality of the composer' s composition techniques of the composer (personal style), and elaborates on suggestions for the performance of these piecesDoutoradoDoutor em Músic

    iKure health worker tracker

For our Senior Design Project, we worked with a company in India called iKure. This company is a social benefits entrepreneurship that strives to provide affordable healthcare to citizens in rural India. In order to run their operations more efficiently, iKure asked us to create an application to track the location of their health workers as they travel throughout the rural communities. We worked closely with one of the employees at iKure, meeting biweekly through conference calls, in order to keep up to date on the companys developments. After careful consideration and additional feedback from iKure, we came up with a two-part system. The first is a mobile application developed using Phonegap that will be installed on the android tablets used by the health workers. This application automatically sends the workers location data to our database in specified time intervals during the designated tracking period. The second part of our system is a website, accessible only by the iKure administrators, which gives them the ability to view the current location of all health workers as well as any workers locations in the past week. The scope of our health worker tracker is not only limited to iKure. It has the potential to be expanded to other industries and services, like emergency response services. By utilizing our product, companies and supervisors will be able to monitor their workers in the field. Because they will know the general location of each worker, supervisors can quickly and efficiently send their workers to any situations that arise

The current status of the Active Controls Technology (ACT) for the advanced subsonic transport project is investigated through analysis of the systems technical data. Control systems technologies under examination include computerized reliability analysis, pitch axis fly by wire actuator, flaperon actuation system design trade study, control law synthesis and analysis, flutter mode control and gust load alleviation analysis, and implementation of alternative ACT systems. Extensive analysis of the computer techniques involved in each system is included

A Hierarchical Approach to Protein Molecular Evolution

    Get PDF
Biological diversity has evolved despite the essentially infinite complexity of protein sequence space. We present a hierarchical approach to the efficient searching of this space and quantify the evolutionary potential of our approach with Monte Carlo simulations. These simulations demonstrate that non-homologous juxtaposition of encoded structure is the rate-limiting step in the production of new tertiary protein folds. Non-homologous ``swapping'' of low energy secondary structures increased the binding constant of a simulated protein by 107\approx10^7 relative to base substitution alone. Applications of our approach include the generation of new protein folds and modeling the molecular evolution of disease.Comment: 15 pages. 2 figures. LaTeX styl

Practice and experience of task management of university students: Case of University of Tsukuba, Japan

    Get PDF
This paper reports the results of a survey that investigated the practice and experience of task management of university students. A total of 202 tasks identified by 24 university students were analyzed. The results suggest that participants had a reasonable sense of priority of tasks, that they tend to perceive a task as a big chunk, not a series of small chunks, that estimated time can be a good indicator of task completion, that time management and loss of coordination are the major factors for uncompleted or non-started tasks, and finally that their notion of task grouping was dominated by task themes or topics
