    Looking Through Whiteness: Objectivity, Racism, Method, and Responsibility

    Does a white philosopher have anything of value to offer to the philosophy of race and racism? If this philosophical subfield must embrace subjective experience, why should we value the perspective of white philosophers whose racial identity is often occluded by racial normativity and who lack substantive experiences of being on the receiving end of racism? Further, if we should be committed to experience, in what sense can the philosophy of race and racism be “objective”? What should that word mean?Tackling this question first, “objective” should at least mean general, that the ideas of the literature can be coherently integrated. An objective take on racism brings together a plurality of perspectives. What’s wrong with just a plurality of satellite ideas? It implies a fragmented approach to ameliorating racism, where different specialists have different recommendations. How can racism, generally, be lessened? If major views of racism are unifiable, then we have a general method to ameliorate racism. This project might appear tone-deaf: a white philosopher unifying things by reducing ideas to some central notion. But this unity isn’t about reducing things but rather integrating them in a way that respects difference. Yet, there’s a reason we should be interested in the white perspective. Whites can speak about racism from a participatory perspective. If whites are knowledgeable, and believe themselves to have no implicit bias, they may suppose they’re “beyond” racism or no longer at risk for perpetuating it. I explore this idea in a psychologically realistic way via my notion of overlooking, where ameliorating racism from the white perspective is an ongoing project. I end by considering how racism is applicable to other philosophical ideas beyond its typical or circumscribed purview. Here, I re-frame responsibility, arguing that we needn’t be forced to choose between responsibility models divided into individual versus social camps. We ought to instead think of responsibility in terms of power, which provides a realistic lens by which persons and groups are held to account. In being more generally convincing, it might actually get folks to take responsibility where they might not otherwise—theory in service of praxis

    The worldmaking thesis stands as a contentious view of reality. Its primary tenet, that we play a role in cognitively making objects, properties, facts, and thereby the world, is dismissed by many philosophers as an incoherent and misguided position. In this paper I critically discuss the thesis and defend it against several criticisms: that (1) it is cosmologically incoherent, (2) raises a problem of causation, (3) implies subjectivism, (4) commits a use-mention fallacy, and (5) it commits the problem of disagreement. I show that these criticisms are not ultimately deleterious to the thesis. Furthermore, I explore ways in which worldmaking constitutes a more satisfactory account of objects, properties, and facts over and against competing views, viz., metaphysical realism

    Awareness and use of motivational interviewing reported by Canadian university sport coaches

    Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a communication strategy to facilitate behaviour change yet MI research in sport is scant. This study investigated awareness and use of MI by coaches in Canadian university sport using a non-experimental design. Less than one-third of the male (30.2%) and one-quarter of the female (20.0%) coaches reported awareness of MI with a similar pattern noted for male (32.0%) and female (25.8%) coaches’ reported use of MI. No sex-based differences in MI awareness and use were evident (p's > .05). Overall, low awareness and use of MI reported by coaches have implications for designing coach education programs

    New N=2 Superconformal Field Theories in Four Dimensions

    New examples of N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories are found as fixed points of SU(2) N=2 supersymmetric QCD. Relations among the scaling dimensions of their relevant chiral operators, global symmetries, and Higgs branches are understood in terms of the general structure of relevant deformations of non-trivial N=2 conformal field theories.     The ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury IX. Constraining asymptotic giant branch evolution with old metal-poor galaxies

    In an attempt to constrain evolutionary models of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase at the limit of low masses and low metallicities, we have examined the luminosity functions and number ratio between AGB and red giant branch (RGB) stars from a sample of resolved galaxies from the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST). This database provides HST optical photometry together with maps of completeness, photometric errors, and star formation histories for dozens of galaxies within 4 Mpc. We select 12 galaxies characterized by predominantly metal-poor populations as indicated by a very steep and blue RGB, and which do not present any indication of recent star formation in their color--magnitude diagrams. Thousands of AGB stars brighter than the tip of the RGB (TRGB) are present in the sample (between 60 and 400 per galaxy), hence the Poisson noise has little impact in our measurements of the AGB/RGB ratio. We model the photometric data with a few sets of thermally pulsing AGB (TP-AGB) evolutionary models with different prescriptions for the mass loss. This technique allows us to set stringent constraints to the TP-AGB models of low-mass metal-poor stars (with M<1.5 Msun, [Fe/H]<~-1.0). Indeed, those which satisfactorily reproduce the observed AGB/RGB ratios have TP-AGB lifetimes between 1.2 and 1.8 Myr, and finish their nuclear burning lives with masses between 0.51 and 0.55 Msun. This is also in good agreement with recent observations of white dwarf masses in the M4 old globular cluster. These constraints can be added to those already derived from Magellanic Cloud star clusters as important mileposts in the arduous process of calibrating AGB evolutionary models.Comment: To appear in ApJ, a version with better resolution is in http://stev.oapd.inaf.it/~lgirardi/rgbagb.pd
