High numerical aperture Mueller matrix polarimetry and applications to multiplexed optical data storage
Optical data storage has reached a point where it is no longer possible to increase
the storage capacity of an optical disk by conventional means. The work presented
here, however, proves experimentally the validity of a novel solution to increase the
capacity of an optical disk. Polarisation is used to store information multiplexed
into shape-birefringent pits. A high numerical aperture scanning confocal microscope
capable of measuring the Muller matrix of a sample is built to measure and
characterise the polarisation properties of such pits. A number of results found during
the development of the apparatus are given. Novel contributions are shown in
the areas of imaging, the theory of coherence and polarisation, polarisation imaging,
linear algebra, polarisation confocal microscopy, and optical data storage. It is
shown that the storage capacity of any existent non-volumetric optical technology
can be increased by 7.16 times, at least
Improved parameterization to invert Rayleigh-wave data for shallow profiles containing stiff inclusions
Inversion of shear-wave velocity profiles from phase-velocity measurements of Rayleigh-wave energy for sites containing stiff layers can be erroneous if such layers are not characterized in the starting or reference model. Incorporation of a priori knowledge then is key for converging upon a realistic or meaningful solution. Resolving soil profiles in desert regions where stiff layers cemented with calcium carbonate are intermixed with softer, uncemented media is an application for which locating shallow stiff inclusions has important implications. Identification of the stiff layers is critical for foundation design and cost estimating of excavations. A parameterization that seems adequate for this problem is to solve for anticipated high-stiffness layers embedded in a coarser (background) profile that captures the general shear-wave velocity trend of the study area. The optimization is accomplished by using simulated annealing. Uncertainty measures resulting from the inversion are helpful for describing the influence of the parameterization on final model estimates
Detecting Anomalous Inclusions in Soil Profiles: Encouraging the Use of Geophysics to Solve Engineering Problems
Geotechnical site investigations often do not take full advantage of geophysical methods. As examples, when delineating cemented strata and when detecting shallow cavities, investigations can be enhanced greatly for low additional cost by incorporating seismic surface-based measurements
For many years “El Mundialito de los Pobres” has been considered a traditional event in our city. For this reason our thesis pretends to know what are the most important factors or variables in this championship, and it is important to know if this event can be considered an imaginary social in Cuenca.
First of all, we will analyze about the history, participation, organization, and what are the changes during this 39 years. Also, we will take into consideration how the different kind of people meets in the same place to watch a mini soccer game.
Then, we will study the importance to participate in this cup because each neighbor every year want to get a place to play in “El Mundialito de los Pobres”. Finally, this thesis shows us how the radio, TV, and the internet give to the “Mundialito” a special place in their spaces such us: newspaper, magazines, news, TV programs or social networks. We chose two media: El Mercurio Newspaper and the OndasAzuayas Radio.
So that, in this work we contrast the social imaginary of violence and crime with our research work the “mundialito”. We will know what the concept of social imaginaries are . This is a qualitative and quantitative research because we did some interviews to the players, people, organizers and coaches. Consequently, we emphasize our investigation on these results, and we will define if the “Mundialito de los Pobres” is or not a social imaginaryLicenciado en Ciencias de la Comunicación. On the n-fold pseudo-hyperspace suspensions of continua
Let X be a (metric) continuum. Let n be a positive integer, let Cn(X) denote the space of all nonempty closed subsets of X with at most n components and let F1(X) denote the space of singletons. The n-fold pseudo-hyperspace suspension of X is the quotient space Cn(X)/F1(X). We present properties of this hyperspace
Image Management in a Touristic Destination: A Qualitative Approach Analysis of the Border City of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
This paper summarizes an academic experience. It has been made by the contributions of a group of experts from a Mexican university participating in a discussion panel called "Image of a Touristic Destination". This was done within the framework of the activities carried out during the 8va. Catedra Patrimonial "Sergio Molina" on October 19-21, 2016. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the process of image management of a border touristic destination through the experience of Ciudad Juárez, in order to obtain an improvement in it. The concept of image is analyzed from its components of responsibility and participation in management between Government (message), Society (context), and Universities (management). The methodological approach selected was exploratory. The grounded theory method was selected and thematic analysis with the support of the Atlas-ti software was made. Suggestions are offered for actions which seek to highlight the positive aspects of the city as a touristic destination. The importance of generating responsibility and participation within a social network was highlighted. It was recommended to take advantage of the economic and intellectual resources in education of the Juarez society so that they can know their culture and history
