Scottish theme towns: have new identities enhanced development?
Three small towns in southwest Scotland have recently been branded as distinct theme towns, based on books, artists and food. This is an attempt to make them more attractive to visitors and thereby improve their economy. The objective of this research is to establish whether the new identities possessed by the towns have enhanced their development. It is argued, using data reviewing the past decade, that they have all developed, albeit at different rates, in terms of the economy and culture. Moreover, it is maintained that social capital has been enhanced and is a factor whose importance has been under-appreciated by planners and observers of this type of process. The relevance of the new identity to the pre-branding identity is also seen as a factor in successful development and ideas of authenticity and heritage are brought to bear on the relationship

Color discrimination in anomalous trichromacy: experiment and theory
In anomalous trichromacy, the color signals available from comparing the activities of the two classes of cone sensitive in the medium and long wavelength parts of the spectrum are much reduced from those available in normal trichromacy, and color discrimination thresholds along the red-green axis are correspondingly elevated. Yet there is evidence that suprathreshold color perception is relatively preserved; this has led to the suggestion that anomalous trichromats post-receptorally amplify their impoverished red-green signals. To test this idea, we measured chromatic discrimination from white and from saturated red and green pedestals. If there is no post-receptoral compensation, the anomalous trichromat's loss of chromatic contrast will apply equally to the pedestal and to the test color. Coupled with a compressively nonlinear neural representation of saturation, this means that a given pedestal contrast will cause a smaller than normal modulation of discrimination sensitivity. We examined cases where chromatic pedestals impair the color discrimination of normal trichromatic observers. As predicted, anomalous observers experienced less impairment than normal trichromats, though they remained less sensitive than normal trichromats. Although the effectiveness of chromatic pedestals in impairing color discrimination was less for anomalous than for normal trichromats, the chromatic pedestals were more effective for anomalous observers than would be expected if the anomalous post-receptoral visual system were the same as in normal trichromacy; the hypothesis of zero compensation can be rejected. This might suggest that the effective contrast of the pedestal is post-receptorally amplified. But on closer analysis, the results do not support candidate simple models involving post-receptoral compensation either
Coronary vasodilatory action of elgodipine in coronary artery disease
The effects of intravenous elgodipine, a new second-generation dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, on hemodynamics and coronary artery diameter were investigated in 15 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for suspected coronary artery disease. Despite a significant decrease in systemic blood pressure, elgodipine infused at a rate of 1.5 micrograms/kg/min over a period of 10 minutes did not affect heart rate and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. The contractile responses during isovolumic contraction showed a slight but significant increase in maximum velocity (56 +/- 10 to 60 +/- 10 seconds-1; p less than 0.005), whereas the time constant of early relaxation was shortened from 49 +/- 11 to 44 +/- 9 ms (p less than 0.05). Coronary sinus and great cardiac vein flow increased significantly by 15 and 26%, respectively. As mean aortic pressure decreased, a significant decrease in coronary sinus (-27%) and great cardiac vein (-28%) resistance was observed, while the calculated myocardial oxygen consumption remained unchanged. In all, 69 coronary segments (including 13 stenotic segments) were analyzed quantitatively using computer-assisted quantitative coronary angiography. A significant increase in mean coronary artery diameter (2.27 +/- 0.53 to 2.48 +/- 0.53 mm; p less than 0.000001), as well as in obstruction diameter, (1.08 +/- 0.29 to 1.36 +/- 0.32 mm; p less than 0.02), was observed. The results demonstrate that elgodipine, in the route and dose described, induces significant vasodilatation of both coronary resistance and epicardial conductance vessels, without adverse effects on heart rate, myocardial oxygen demand and contractile indexes
The Time-Domain Spectroscopic Survey: Understanding the Optically Variable Sky with SEQUELS in SDSS-III
The Time-Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) is an SDSS-IV eBOSS subproject
primarily aimed at obtaining identification spectra of ~220,000
optically-variable objects systematically selected from SDSS/Pan-STARRS1
multi-epoch imaging. We present a preview of the science enabled by TDSS, based
on TDSS spectra taken over ~320 deg^2 of sky as part of the SEQUELS survey in
SDSS-III, which is in part a pilot survey for eBOSS in SDSS-IV. Using the
15,746 TDSS-selected single-epoch spectra of photometrically variable objects
in SEQUELS, we determine the demographics of our variability-selected sample,
and investigate the unique spectral characteristics inherent in samples
selected by variability. We show that variability-based selection of quasars
complements color-based selection by selecting additional redder quasars, and
mitigates redshift biases to produce a smooth quasar redshift distribution over
a wide range of redshifts. The resulting quasar sample contains systematically
higher fractions of blazars and broad absorption line quasars than from
color-selected samples. Similarly, we show that M-dwarfs in the TDSS-selected
stellar sample have systematically higher chromospheric active fractions than
the underlying M-dwarf population, based on their H-alpha emission. TDSS also
contains a large number of RR Lyrae and eclipsing binary stars with
main-sequence colors, including a few composite-spectrum binaries. Finally, our
visual inspection of TDSS spectra uncovers a significant number of peculiar
spectra, and we highlight a few cases of these interesting objects. With a
factor of ~15 more spectra, the main TDSS survey in SDSS-IV will leverage the
lessons learned from these early results for a variety of time-domain science

Visual adaptation and face perception
The appearance of faces can be strongly affected by the characteristics of faces viewed previously. These perceptual after-effects reflect processes of sensory adaptation that are found throughout the visual system, but which have been considered only relatively recently in the context of higher level perceptual judgements. In this review, we explore the consequences of adaptation for human face perception, and the implications of adaptation for understanding the neural-coding schemes underlying the visual representation of faces. The properties of face after-effects suggest that they, in part, reflect response changes at high and possibly face-specific levels of visual processing. Yet, the form of the after-effects and the norm-based codes that they point to show many parallels with the adaptations and functional organization that are thought to underlie the encoding of perceptual attributes like colour. The nature and basis for human colour vision have been studied extensively, and we draw on ideas and principles that have been developed to account for norms and normalization in colour vision to consider potential similarities and differences in the representation and adaptation of faces
A Simple Likelihood Method for Quasar Target Selection
We present a new method for quasar target selection using photometric fluxes
and a Bayesian probabilistic approach. For our purposes we target quasars using
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry to a magnitude limit of g=22. The
efficiency and completeness of this technique is measured using the Baryon
Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data, taken in 2010. This technique was
used for the uniformly selected (CORE) sample of targets in BOSS year one
spectroscopy to be realized in the 9th SDSS data release. When targeting at a
density of 40 objects per sq-deg (the BOSS quasar targeting density) the
efficiency of this technique in recovering z>2.2 quasars is 40%. The
completeness compared to all quasars identified in BOSS data is 65%. This paper

Photometric redshifts and quasar probabilities from a single, data-driven generative model
We describe a technique for simultaneously classifying and estimating the
redshift of quasars. It can separate quasars from stars in arbitrary redshift
ranges, estimate full posterior distribution functions for the redshift, and
naturally incorporate flux uncertainties, missing data, and multi-wavelength
photometry. We build models of quasars in flux-redshift space by applying the
extreme deconvolution technique to estimate the underlying density. By
integrating this density over redshift one can obtain quasar flux-densities in
different redshift ranges. This approach allows for efficient, consistent, and
fast classification and photometric redshift estimation. This is achieved by
combining the speed obtained by choosing simple analytical forms as the basis
of our density model with the flexibility of non-parametric models through the
use of many simple components with many parameters. We show that this technique
is competitive with the best photometric quasar classification
techniques---which are limited to fixed, broad redshift ranges and high
signal-to-noise ratio data---and with the best photometric redshift techniques
when applied to broadband optical data. We demonstrate that the inclusion of UV
and NIR data significantly improves photometric quasar--star separation and
essentially resolves all of the redshift degeneracies for quasars inherent to
the ugriz filter system, even when included data have a low signal-to-noise
ratio. For quasars spectroscopically confirmed by the SDSS 84 and 97 percent of
the objects with GALEX UV and UKIDSS NIR data have photometric redshifts within
0.1 and 0.3, respectively, of the spectroscopic redshift; this amounts to about
a factor of three improvement over ugriz-only photometric redshifts. Our code
