Normal-State Spin Dynamics and Temperature-Dependent Spin Resonance Energy in an Optimally Doped Iron Arsenide Superconductor
The proximity of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the phase
diagram of iron arsenides, the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling and the
"resonance peak" in the superconducting spin excitation spectrum have fostered
the hypothesis of magnetically mediated Cooper pairing. However, since most
theories of superconductivity are based on a pairing boson of sufficient
spectral weight in the normal state, detailed knowledge of the spin excitation
spectrum above the superconducting transition temperature Tc is required to
assess the viability of this hypothesis. Using inelastic neutron scattering we
have studied the spin excitations in optimally doped BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 (Tc = 25
K) over a wide range of temperatures and energies. We present the results in
absolute units and find that the normal state spectrum carries a weight
comparable to underdoped cuprates. In contrast to cuprates, however, the
spectrum agrees well with predictions of the theory of nearly antiferromagnetic
metals, without complications arising from a pseudogap or competing
incommensurate spin-modulated phases. We also show that the temperature
evolution of the resonance energy follows the superconducting energy gap, as
expected from conventional Fermi-liquid approaches. Our observations point to a
surprisingly simple theoretical description of the spin dynamics in the iron
arsenides and provide a solid foundation for models of magnetically mediated

Influence of apical oxygen on the extent of in-plane exchange interaction in cuprate superconductors
In high Tc superconductors the magnetic and electronic properties are
determined by the probability that valence electrons virtually jump from site
to site in the CuO2 planes, a mechanism opposed by on-site Coulomb repulsion
and favored by hopping integrals. The spatial extent of the latter is related
to transport properties, including superconductivity, and to the dispersion
relation of spin excitations (magnons). Here, for three antiferromagnetic
parent compounds (single-layer Bi2Sr0.99La1.1CuO6+delta, double-layer
Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3O6 and infinite-layer CaCuO2) differing by the number of apical
atoms, we compare the magnetic spectra measured by resonant inelastic x-ray
scattering over a significant portion of the reciprocal space and with
unprecedented accuracy. We observe that the absence of apical oxygens increases
the in-plane hopping range and, in CaCuO2, it leads to a genuine 3D
exchange-bond network. These results establish a corresponding relation between
the exchange interactions and the crystal structure, and provide fresh insight

Direct intra-tumoral injection of zinc-acetate halts tumor growth in a xenograft model of prostate cancer
Intracellular levels of zinc have shown a strong inverse correlation to growth and malignancy of prostate cancer. To date, studies of zinc supplementation in prostate cancer have been equivocal and have not accounted for bioavailability of zinc. Therefore, we hypothesized that direct intra-tumoral injection of zinc could impact prostate cancer growth. In this study, we evaluated the cytotoxic properties of the pH neutral salt zinc acetate on the prostate cancer cell lines PC3, DU145 and LNCaP. Zinc acetate killed prostate cancer cell lines in vitro, independent of androgen sensitivity, in a dose-dependent manner in a range between 200 and 600 μM. Cell death occurred rapidly with 50% cell death by six hours and maximal cell death by 18 hours. We next established a xenograft model of prostate cancer and tested an experimental treatment protocol of direct intra-tumoral injection of zinc acetate. We found that zinc treatments halted the growth of the prostate cancer tumors and substantially extended the survival of the animals, whilst causing no detectable cytoxicity to other tissues. Thus, our studies form a solid proof-of-concept that direct intra-tumoral injection of zinc acetate could be a safe and effective treatment strategy for prostate cancer
Inflammatory potential of the diet and risk of colorectal cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study
Pro-inflammatory diets are associated with risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC), however inconsistencies exist in subsite- and sex-specific associations. The relationship between CRC and combined lifestyle-related factors that contribute towards a low-grade inflammatory profile has not yet been explored. We examined the association between the dietary inflammatory potential and an inflammatory profile and CRC risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. This cohort included 476,160 participants followed-up of 14 years and 5,991 incident CRC cases (3,897 colon and 2,094 rectal tumours). Dietary inflammatory potential was estimated using an Inflammatory Score of the Diet (ISD). An Inflammatory Profile Score (IPS) was constructed, incorporating the ISD, physical activity level and abdominal obesity. The associations between the ISD and CRC and IPS and CRC were assessed using multivariable regression models. More pro- inflammatory diets were related to a higher CRC risk, particularly for colon cancer; Hazar Ratio (HR) for highest versus lowest ISD quartile was 1.15 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-1.27) for CRC, 1.24 (95% CI 1.09-1.41) for colon cancer and 0.99 (95% CI 0.83-1.17) for rectal cancer. Associations were more pronounced in men and not significant in women. The IPS was associated with CRC risk, particularly colon cancer among men; HRs for the highest versus lowest IPS were 1.62 (95% CI 1.31- 2.01) for colon cancer overall and 2.11 (95% CI 1.50-2.97) for colon cancer in men. This study shows that more pro-inflammatory diets and a more inflammatory profile are associated with higher risk of CRC, principally colon cancer and in men. This article is protected by copyright. Gradual caldera collapse at Bárdarbunga volcano, Iceland, regulated by lateral magma outflow
Large volcanic eruptions on Earth commonly occur with a collapse of the roof of a crustal magma reservoir, forming a caldera. Only a few such collapses occur per century, and the lack of detailed observations has obscured insight into the mechanical interplay between collapse and eruption.We usemultiparameter geophysical and geochemical data to show that the 110-squarekilometer and 65-meter-deep collapse of Bárdarbunga caldera in 2014-2015 was initiated through withdrawal of magma, and lateral migration through a 48-kilometers-long dike, from a 12-kilometers deep reservoir. Interaction between the pressure exerted by the subsiding reservoir roof and the physical properties of the subsurface flow path explain the gradual, nearexponential decline of both collapse rate and the intensity of the 180-day-long eruption
Calculation of the relative metastabilities of proteins in subcellular compartments of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
[abridged] Background: The distribution of chemical species in an open system
at metastable equilibrium can be expressed as a function of environmental
variables which can include temperature, oxidation-reduction potential and
others. Calculations of metastable equilibrium for various model systems were
used to characterize chemical transformations among proteins and groups of
proteins found in different compartments of yeast cells.
Results: With increasing oxygen fugacity, the relative metastability fields
of model proteins for major subcellular compartments go as mitochondrion,
endoplasmic reticulum, cytoplasm, nucleus. In a metastable equilibrium setting
at relatively high oxygen fugacity, proteins making up actin are predominant,
but those constituting the microtubule occur with a low chemical activity. A
reaction sequence involving the microtubule and spindle pole proteins was
predicted by combining the known intercompartmental interactions with a
hypothetical program of oxygen fugacity changes in the local environment. In
further calculations, the most-abundant proteins within compartments generally
occur in relative abundances that only weakly correspond to a metastable
equilibrium distribution. However, physiological populations of proteins that
form complexes often show an overall positive or negative correlation with the
relative abundances of proteins in metastable assemblages.
Conclusions: This study explored the outlines of a thermodynamic description
of chemical transformations among interacting proteins in yeast cells. The
results suggest that these methods can be used to measure the degree of
departure of a natural biochemical process or population from a local minimum

RNA localization in neurite morphogenesis and synaptic regulation: current evidence and novel approaches
It is now generally accepted that RNA localization in the central nervous system conveys important roles both during development and in the adult brain. Of special interest is protein synthesis located at the synapse, as this potentially confers selective synaptic modification and has been implicated in the establishment of memories. However, the underlying molecular events are largely unknown. In this review, we will first discuss novel findings that highlight the role of RNA localization in neurons. We will focus on the role of RNA localization in neurotrophin signaling, axon outgrowth, dendrite and dendritic spine morphogenesis as well as in synaptic plasticity. Second, we will briefly present recent work on the role of microRNAs in translational control in dendrites and its implications for learning and memory. Finally, we discuss recent approaches to visualize RNAs in living cells and their employment for studying RNA trafficking in neurons
