The hepatocutaneous syndrome or superficial necrolytic dermatitis, is a dogs affection which is manifested with crusting and ulceration lesions in distal extremities on the face and the external genitals. These cutaneous lesions coincide together with hepatic lesions and decreased blood amino acid levels. In this article three cases of dogs with this syndrome are described. One comparison can be made with necrolytic migratory erythema described in human medecine
Comportamiento frente a cloruros de un hormigón autocompactable de alta resistencia con mezclas ternarias de nano y micro sÃlice
In this paper, the influence of additions of nanosilica (nSi) and microsilica (mSi) on the behavÂiour of binary and ternary mixtures in chloride environments is studied. The main objective is to obtain high-performance self-compacting concrete (HPSCC) with a high durability which can meet specific demands in such aggressive environments. Ten blends were manufactured using Portland cement (CEM I 52.5 R) and additions of nSi and mSi in binary and ternary mixtures. The results of three tests frequently used to evaluate resistance to chloride penetration– electrical resistivity, migration and chloride diffusion –were studied and compared. Both binary and ternary mixtures presented significant improvements in chloride resistance, generally in proportion to the total content of the addition. In all the ternary mixtures, high resistivity is obtained, which indicates that such mixtures have a notably low chloride penetrability. Furthermore, these mixtures provided extremely low chloride diffusion coefficients even at small addition ratios.
Based on the analytic and comparative study of a large documentary collection that frequently raises complex exegetical questions, the information related to Ossius, bishop of Córdoba, is valued, fixed, and duly contextualized until the end of the first oecumenical council. The knowledge of his life, closely linked to the Constantinian policy intending to standardize clerical affairs, allows a better and more accurate understanding of the ecclesiastical history of his time. After specifying his action in the Donatist schism, his relevant interventions carried out in the East, recently subordinated to Constantine, are examined. These interventions, basically inserted in the vast and multifaceted Arian conflict, show that Ossius takes sides with the Alexandrian bishop from the beginning. This one may infer from his stay as imperial commissioner both in Alexandria and Antioch, cities in which he presides over respective synods and accomplish other tasks: it seems revealing the composition (at least partial) by Ossius of the Antiochene synodal letter, which demonstrates the authority he then had. Regarding the general synod summoned by the regent upon verifying the impossible reconciliation between Alexander and Arius, its course and the exalted position that the Hispanic continued to have in it are exposed; and this despite the fact that the president of the assembly was Constantine, whom he would however replace frequently.
Environmental assessment of a new building envelope material derived from urban agriculture wastes: the case of the tomato plants stems
Purpose:
Decarbonizing cities is one of today biggest challenges. In this regard, particular attention has been paid on improving the environmental performance of buildings. In this framework, this work consists in assessing the environmental impact of an innovative building envelope component derived from urban agriculture (UA) wastes. In fact, rooftop UA seems to be a possible solution to the rising food demand due to increasing urban demographic growth. Consequently, rooftop UA wastes need to be treated in sustainable ways.
Methods:
This study aims to determine the carbon footprint and embodied energy of a new infill wall material, derived from UA wastes produced by a building rooftop greenhouse tomato crop, and evaluate the potential biogenic carbon that such by-product could fix temporally until its end of life. After an initial description of the manufacturing process of the new material, its carbon footprint and embodied energy have been calculated by means of the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology according to the ISO 14044 and the ISO 14067 guidelines adapted to the analyzed context. In particular, the inventory analysis is based on data collected from the production of samples of the new material at the laboratory scale.
Results and discussion:
The results of the LCA indicate that, when the biogenic carbon fixed in the UA wastes is considered, a negative carbon footprint of -0.2 kg CO2 eq. per kg of material can be obtained. Hence, it can be assumed that from a life cycle perspective the material is able to fix carbon emissions instead of emitting them. Specifically, for the considered scenario, approximately 0.42 kg CO2 eq./m2 per year could be sequestered. However, the crop area required to produce enough waste to manufacture a unit of material is quite high. Therefore, future studies should focus on individuate solutions to reduce the density of the new component, and also different urban crops with higher waste production rates.
Conclusions:
The outcomes of the study put in evidence the potential of the new proposed infill wall component in fixing carbon emissions from UA, allowing to also compensate those relating to the production and transportation stages of the component life cycle. Moreover, producing by-products with UA wastes, hence temporally storing the carbon fixed by crops, may contribute to reduce the carbon cycles speed conversely to traditional waste management solutions, other than lower new raw materials depletion
Modelling the night sky brightness and light pollutionsources of Montsec protected area
We proceeded to the modelling of the night sky brightness of Montsec area (north-east of Spain), an astronomical protected area certified as a Starlight Reserve. We have used the hyperspectral version of ILLUMINA, an artificial sky brightness model. Ground based measurements for Montsec and other areas of Catalonia [15], [16], including both photometric and spectroscopic data, has been used to fit and evaluate the input parameters of the model. In this first modelling attempt, Lleida, the biggest city in the area, has been considered as the unique source of light pollution. In 2014 there was an update of the lighting infrastructure in Lleida. A detailed comparison of the sky brightness before and after the change is shown in order to measure the effects that different kind of lamps can produce. This information could be used to plan for future updates and improvements of the lighting systems in the area.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Groups without cultured representatives dominate eukaryotic picophytoplankton in the oligotrophic South East Pacific Ocean
Background: Photosynthetic picoeukaryotes (PPE) with a cell size less than 3 µm play a critical role in oceanic primary production. In recent years, the composition of marine picoeukaryote communities has been intensively investigated by molecular approaches, but their photosynthetic fraction remains poorly characterized. This is largely because the classical approach that relies on constructing 18S rRNA gene clone libraries from filtered seawater samples using universal eukaryotic primers is heavily biased toward heterotrophs, especially alveolates and stramenopiles, despite the fact that autotrophic cells in general outnumber heterotrophic ones in the euphotic zone.
Methodology/Principal Findings: In order to better assess the composition of the eukaryotic picophytoplankton in the South East Pacific Ocean, encompassing the most oligotrophic oceanic regions on earth, we used a novel approach based on flow cytometry sorting followed by construction of 18S rRNA gene clone libraries. This strategy dramatically increased the recovery of sequences from putative autotrophic groups. The composition of the PPE community appeared highly variable both vertically down the water column and horizontally across the South East Pacific Ocean. In the central gyre, uncultivated lineages dominated: a recently discovered clade of Prasinophyceae (IX), clades of marine Chrysophyceae and Haptophyta, the latter division containing a potentially new class besides Prymnesiophyceae and Pavlophyceae. In contrast, on the edge of the gyre and in the coastal Chilean upwelling, groups with cultivated representatives (Prasinophyceae clade VII and Mamiellales) dominated.
Conclusions/Significance: Our data demonstrate that a very large fraction of the eukaryotic picophytoplankton still escapes cultivation. The use of flow cytometry sorting should prove very useful to better characterize specific plankton populations by molecular approaches such as gene cloning or metagenomics, and also to obtain into culture strains representative of these novel groups
Assessment of microbial plankton diversity as an ecological indicator in the NW Mediterranean coast
High-throughput sequencing of microbial assemblages has been proposed as an alternative methodology to the traditional ones used in marine monitoring and environmental assessment. Here, we evaluated pico- and nanoplankton diversity as ecological indicators in NW Mediterranean coastal waters by comparing their diversity in samples subjected to varying degrees of continental pressures. Using metabarcoding of the 16S and 18S rRNA genes, we explored whether alphadiversity indices, abundance of Operational Taxonomic Units and taxonomic groups (and their ratios) provide information on the ecological quality of coastal waters. Our results revealed that only eukaryotic diversity metrics and a limited number of prokaryotic and eukaryotic taxa displayed potential in assessing continental influences in our surveyed area, resulting thus in a restrained potential of microbial plankton diversity as an ecological indicator. Therefore, incorporating microbial plankton diversity in environmental assessment could not always result in a significant improvement of current marine monitoring strategies.Preprint2,35
Molecular diversity and distribution of marine fungi across 130 European environmental samples.
Journal ArticleEnvironmental DNA and culture-based analyses have suggested that fungi are present in low diversity and in low abundance in many marine environments, especially in the upper water column. Here, we use a dual approach involving high-throughput diversity tag sequencing from both DNA and RNA templates and fluorescent cell counts to evaluate the diversity and relative abundance of fungi across marine samples taken from six European near-shore sites. We removed very rare fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) selecting only OTUs recovered from multiple samples for a detailed analysis. This approach identified a set of 71 fungal 'OTU clusters' that account for 66% of all the sequences assigned to the Fungi. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that this diversity includes a significant number of chytrid-like lineages that had not been previously described, indicating that the marine environment encompasses a number of zoosporic fungi that are new to taxonomic inventories. Using the sequence datasets, we identified cases where fungal OTUs were sampled across multiple geographical sites and between different sampling depths. This was especially clear in one relatively abundant and diverse phylogroup tentatively named Novel Chytrid-Like-Clade 1 (NCLC1). For comparison, a subset of the water column samples was also investigated using fluorescent microscopy to examine the abundance of eukaryotes with chitin cell walls. Comparisons of relative abundance of RNA-derived fungal tag sequences and chitin cell-wall counts demonstrate that fungi constitute a low fraction of the eukaryotic community in these water column samples. Taken together, these results demonstrate the phylogenetic position and environmental distribution of 71 lineages, improving our understanding of the diversity and abundance of fungi in marine environments.Gordon and Betty Moore FoundationDeutsche ForschungsgemeinschaftMarie Curie International Outgoing FellowshipMarie Curie Intra-European FellowshipEMBO Long-Term fellowshi
SMASHing the LMC: A Tidally-induced Warp in the Outer LMC and a Large-scale Reddening Map
We present a study of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using ~2.2 million red clump (RC) stars selected from
the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History. To correct for line-of-sight dust
extinction, the intrinsic RC color and magnitude and their radial dependence
are carefully measured by using internal nearly dust-free regions. These are
then used to construct an accurate 2D reddening map (165 square degrees with
~10 arcmin resolution) of the LMC disk and the 3D spatial distribution of RC
stars. An inclined disk model is fit to the 2D distance map yielding a best-fit
inclination angle i = 25.86(+0.73,-1.39) degrees with random errors of +\-0.19
degrees and line-of-nodes position angle theta = 149.23(+6.43,-8.35) degrees
with random errors of +/-0.49 degrees. These angles vary with galactic radius,
indicating that the LMC disk is warped and twisted likely due to the repeated
tidal interactions with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). For the first time,
our data reveal a significant warp in the southwestern part of the outer disk
starting at rho ~ 7 degrees that departs from the defined LMC plane up to ~4
kpc toward the SMC, suggesting that it originated from a strong interaction
with the SMC. In addition, the inner disk encompassing the off-centered bar
appears to be tilted up to 5-15 degrees relative to the rest of the LMC disk.
These findings on the outer warp and the tilted bar are consistent with the
predictions from the Besla et al. simulation of a recent direct collision with
the SMC.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, published in Ap
