    Landau Gauge Fixing on GPUs

    In this paper we present and explore the performance of Landau gauge fixing in GPUs using CUDA. We consider the steepest descent algorithm with Fourier acceleration, and compare the GPU performance with a parallel CPU implementation. Using 32432^4 lattice volumes, we find that the computational power of a single Tesla C2070 GPU is equivalent to approximately 256 CPU cores.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures and 3 table

    El artículo 26 de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos, establece que toda persona tiene derecho a la educación ¿cómo se transforma esa declaración en realidad en el nivel universitario? Democratizar el acceso y la permanencia en los estudios superiores, involucra un compromiso que aúna la política educativa institucional con la concepción de un proyecto pedagógico que genera condiciones para garantizar que las puertas abiertas de la universidad no se vuelvan giratorias . En tal sentido, implica reconocer las complejas situaciones que se presentan año a año en relación con las competencias académicas de los estudiantes, el imaginario docente sobre lo que deberían saber , lo que traen de la secundaria y las dificultades reales de los estudiantes -no circunscriptas solo a lo académico- si bien es el principal espacio donde se evidencia. Conocer quiénes son, qué piensan sobre sus fortalezas y sus debilidades para insertarse como alumno universitario, qué esperan de una tutoría, cuáles son sus hábitos de estudio, etc. son algunas de las cuestiones que, entre otro conjunto de iniciativas, el equipo del Programa de Tutorías para los ingresantes a la Carrera de Ingeniería en Alimentos intentó responder y en esta oportunidad, compartirlo con los colegas de América Latina

    An additional brain endocast of the ictidosaur riograndia guaibensis (Eucynodontia: Probainognathia): Intraspecific variation of endocranial traits

    Recently, the morphology and encephalization of the brain endocast of the Triassic non-mammaliaform probainognathian cynodont Riograndia guaibensis were studied. Here, we analyzed the brain endocast of an additional specimen of this species. The new endocast shows well-defined olfactory bulbs and a median sulcus dividing the hemispheres, traits that were not clearly observed in the first studied specimen. Encephalization quotients were also calculated, revealing similar values to other non-mammaliaform cynodonts and lower than those of the first analyzed specimen. The analyzed cranium is slightly larger than the first studied one and may represent an advanced ontogenetic stage. Hence, these differences may be related to the intraspecific variation of this cynodont or alternatively, to the preservation of each specimen.Fil: Kerber, Leonardo.     Quantitative genome re-sequencing defines multiple mutations conferring chloroquine resistance in rodent malaria

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Drug resistance in the malaria parasite <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>severely compromises the treatment and control of malaria. A knowledge of the critical mutations conferring resistance to particular drugs is important in understanding modes of drug action and mechanisms of resistances. They are required to design better therapies and limit drug resistance.</p> <p>A mutation in the gene (<it>pfcrt</it>) encoding a membrane transporter has been identified as a principal determinant of chloroquine resistance in <it>P</it>. <it>falciparum</it>, but we lack a full account of higher level chloroquine resistance. Furthermore, the determinants of resistance in the other major human malaria parasite, <it>P. vivax</it>, are not known. To address these questions, we investigated the genetic basis of chloroquine resistance in an isogenic lineage of rodent malaria parasite <it>P. chabaudi </it>in which high level resistance to chloroquine has been progressively selected under laboratory conditions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Loci containing the critical genes were mapped by Linkage Group Selection, using a genetic cross between the high-level chloroquine-resistant mutant and a genetically distinct sensitive strain. A novel high-resolution quantitative whole-genome re-sequencing approach was used to reveal three regions of selection on chr11, chr03 and chr02 that appear progressively at increasing drug doses on three chromosomes. Whole-genome sequencing of the chloroquine-resistant parent identified just four point mutations in different genes on these chromosomes. Three mutations are located at the foci of the selection valleys and are therefore predicted to confer different levels of chloroquine resistance. The critical mutation conferring the first level of chloroquine resistance is found in <it>aat1</it>, a putative aminoacid transporter.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Quantitative trait loci conferring selectable phenotypes, such as drug resistance, can be mapped directly using progressive genome-wide linkage group selection. Quantitative genome-wide short-read genome resequencing can be used to reveal these signatures of drug selection at high resolution. The identities of three genes (and mutations within them) conferring different levels of chloroquine resistance generate insights regarding the genetic architecture and mechanisms of resistance to chloroquine and other drugs. Importantly, their orthologues may now be evaluated for critical or accessory roles in chloroquine resistance in human malarias <it>P. vivax </it>and <it>P. falciparum</it>.</p

    O oferecimento de serviços à população pelo governo é um aspecto amplamente discutido dentro do cenário brasileiro. O transporte público, foco de grandes discussões há alguns anos, está diretamente conectado com vários outros elementos dentro de uma cidade. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo de caso de uma cidade do interior do estado de São Paulo, com enfoque sistêmico, utilizando a metodologia de sistemas soft, discutindo as relações entre os problemas atuais da gestão do transporte público e possíveis melhorias para satisfazer as necessidades dos usuários. Pôde-se verificar vários pontos falhos importantes do sistema analisado, e a escolha da aplicação da SSM contribuiu para a compreensão da situação-problema existente, porque foram feitas ligações entre o mundo sistêmico e o real, o que proporcionou a modelagem de soluções que envolvessem todas as partes interessadas no sistema

    Geographic Structuring of the Plasmodium falciparum Sarco(endo)plasmic Reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (PfSERCA) Gene Diversity

    Artemisinin, a thapsigargin-like sesquiterpene has been shown to inhibit the Plasmodium falciparum sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase PfSERCA. To collect baseline pfserca sequence information before field deployment of Artemisinin-based Combination therapies that may select mutant parasites, we conducted a sequence analysis of 100 isolates from multiple sites in Africa, Asia and South America. Coding sequence diversity was large, with 29 mutated codons, including 32 SNPs (average of one SNP/115 bp), of which 19 were novel mutations. Most SNP detected in this study were clustered within a region in the cytosolic head of the protein. The PfSERCA functional domains were very well conserved, with non synonymous mutations located outside the functional domains, except for the S769N mutation associated in French Guiana with elevated IC50 for artemether. The S769N mutation is located close to the hinge of the headpiece, which in other species modulates calcium affinity and in consequence efficacy of inhibitors, possibly linking calcium homeostasis to drug resistance. Genetic diversity was highest in Senegal, Brazil and French Guiana, and few mutations were identified in Asia. Population genetic analysis was conducted for a partial fragment of the gene encompassing nucleotide coordinates 87-2862 (unambiguous sequence available for 96 isolates). This supported a geographic clustering, with a separation between Old and New World samples and one dominant ancestral haplotype. Genetic drift alone cannot explain the observed polymorphism, suggesting that other evolutionary mechanisms are operating. One possible contributor could be the frequency of haemoglobinopathies that are associated with calcium dysregulation in the erythrocyte

    New cladotherian mammal from southern Chile and the evolution of mesungulatid meridiolestidans at the dusk of the Mesozoic era

    In the last decades, several discoveries have uncovered the complexity of mammalian evolution during the Mesozoic Era, including important Gondwanan lineages: the australosphenidans, gondwanatherians, and meridiolestidans (Dryolestoidea). Most often, their presence and diversity is documented by isolated teeth and jaws. Here, we describe a new meridiolestidan mammal, Orretherium tzen gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Cretaceous of southern Chile, based on a partial jaw with five cheek teeth in locis and an isolated upper premolar. Phylogenetic analysis places Orretherium as the earliest divergence within Mesungulatidae, before other forms such as the Late Cretaceous Mesungulatum and Coloniatherium, and the early Paleocene Peligrotherium. The in loco tooth sequence (last two premolars and three molars) is the first recovered for a Cretaceous taxon in this family and suggests that reconstructed tooth sequences for other Mesozoic mesungulatids may include more than one species. Tooth eruption and replacement show that molar eruption in mesungulatids is heterochronically delayed with regard to basal dryolestoids, with therian-like simultaneous eruption of the last premolar and last molar. Meridiolestidans seem endemic to Patagonia, but given their diversity and abundance, and the similarity of vertebrate faunas in other regions of Gondwana, they may yet be discovered in other continents.Fil: Martinelli, Agustín Guillermo.
