On the commutability of homogenization and linearization in finite elasticity
We study non-convex elastic energy functionals associated to (spatially)
periodic, frame indifferent energy densities with a single non-degenerate
energy well at SO(n). Under the assumption that the energy density admits a
quadratic Taylor expansion at identity, we prove that the Gamma-limits
associated to homogenization and linearization commute. Moreover, we show that
the homogenized energy density, which is determined by a multi-cell
homogenization formula, has a quadratic Taylor expansion with a quadratic term
that is given by the homogenization of the quadratic term associated to the
linearization of the initial energy density
Second-order -regularity in nonlinear elliptic problems
A second-order regularity theory is developed for solutions to a class of
quasilinear elliptic equations in divergence form, including the -Laplace
equation, with merely square-integrable right-hand side. Our results amount to
the existence and square integrability of the weak derivatives of the nonlinear
expression of the gradient under the divergence operator. This provides a
nonlinear counterpart of the classical -coercivity theory for linear
problems, which is missing in the existing literature. Both local and global
estimates are established. The latter apply to solutions to either Dirichlet or
Neumann boundary value problems. Minimal regularity on the boundary of the
domain is required. If the domain is convex, no regularity of its boundary is
needed at all
Empirical evaluation of microtremor H/V spectral ratio
The objective of this work is to perform a purely empirical assessment of the actual capabilities of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio technique to provide reliable and relevant information concerning site conditions and/or site amplification. This objective has been tackled through the homogeneous (re)processing of a large volume of earthquakes and ambient noise data recorded by different research teams in more than 200 sites located mainly in Europe, but also in the Caribbean and in Tehran. The original recordings were first gathered in a specific database with information on both the sites and recorded events. Then, for all sites close to an instrumented reference, average site-to-reference spectral ratios (“spectral ratio method” (SSR)) were derived in a homogeneous way (window selection, smoothing, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, averaging), as well as H/V ratios (“HVSRE–RF”) on earthquake recordings. H/V ratios were also obtained from noise recordings at each site (either specific measurements, or extracted from pre- or post-event noise windows). The spectral curves resulting from these three techniques were estimated reliable for a subset of 104 sites, and were thus compared in terms of fundamental frequency, amplitude and amplification bandwidth, exhibiting agreements and disagreements, for which interpretations are looked for in relation with characteristics of site conditions. The first important result consists in the very good agreement between fundamental frequencies obtained with either technique, observed for 81% of the analyzed sites. A significant part of the disagreements correspond to thick, low frequency, continental sites where natural noise level is often very low and H/V noise ratios do not exhibit any clear peak. The second important result is the absence of correlation between H/V peak amplitude and the actual site amplification measured on site-to-reference spectral ratios. There are, however, two statistically significant results about the amplitude of the H/V curve: the peak amplitude may be considered as a lower bound estimate of the actual amplification indicated by SSR (it is smaller for 79% of the 104 investigated sites), and, from another point of view, the difference in amplitude exhibits a questioning correlation with the geometrical characteristics of the sediment/basement interface: large SSR/HV differences might thus help to detect the existence of significant 2D or 3D effects.Published75-1084.1. Proposal for taking data with the KLOE-2 detector at the DANE collider upgraded in energy
This document reviews the physics program of the KLOE-2 detector at
DANE upgraded in energy and provides a simple solution to run the
collider above the -peak (up to 2, possibly 2.5 GeV). It is shown how a
precise measurement of the multihadronic cross section in the energy region up
to 2 (possibly 2.5) GeV would have a major impact on the tests of the Standard
Model through a precise determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of the
muon and the effective fine-structure constant at the scale. With a
luminosity of about cms, DANE upgraded in energy
can perform a scan in the region from 1 to 2.5 GeV in one year by collecting an
integrated luminosity of 20 pb (corresponding to a few days of data
taking) for single point, assuming an energy step of 25 MeV. A few years of
data taking in this region would provide important tests of QCD and effective
theories by physics with open thresholds for pseudo-scalar (like
the ), scalar (, etc...) and axial-vector (, etc...)
mesons; vector-mesons spectroscopy and baryon form factors; tests of CVC and
searches for exotics. In the final part of the document a technical solution
for the energy upgrade of DANE is proposed.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Measurements of Flavour Dependent Fragmentation Functions in Z^0 -> qq(bar) Events
Fragmentation functions for charged particles in Z -> qq(bar) events have
been measured for bottom (b), charm (c) and light (uds) quarks as well as for
all flavours together. The results are based on data recorded between 1990 and
1995 using the OPAL detector at LEP. Event samples with different flavour
compositions were formed using reconstructed D* mesons and secondary vertices.
The \xi_p = ln(1/x_E) distributions and the position of their maxima \xi_max
are also presented separately for uds, c and b quark events. The fragmentation
function for b quarks is significantly softer than for uds quarks.Comment: 29 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures (and colour figs) included, submitted

W+W- production and triple gauge boson couplings at LEP energies up to 183 GeV
A study of W-pair production in e+e- annihilations at Lep2 is presented,
based on 877 W+W- candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 57
pb-1 at sqrt(s) = 183 GeV. Assuming that the angular distributions of the
W-pair production and decay, as well as their branching fractions, are
described by the Standard Model, the W-pair production cross-section is
measured to be 15.43 +- 0.61 (stat.) +- 0.26 (syst.) pb. Assuming lepton
universality and combining with our results from lower centre-of-mass energies,
the W branching fraction to hadrons is determined to be 67.9 +- 1.2 (stat.) +-
0.5 (syst.)%. The number of W-pair candidates and the angular distributions for
each final state (qqlnu, qqqq, lnulnu) are used to determine the triple gauge
boson couplings. After combining these values with our results from lower
centre-of-mass energies we obtain D(kappa_g)=0.11+0.52-0.37,
D(g^z_1)=0.01+0.13-0.12 and lambda=-0.10+0.13-0.12, where the errors include
both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined
setting the other two couplings to the Standard Model value. The fraction of W
bosons produced with a longitudinal polarisation is measured to be
0.242+-0.091(stat.)+-0.023(syst.). All these measurements are consistent with
the Standard Model expectations.Comment: 48 pages, LaTeX, including 13 eps or ps figures, submitted to
