• Identificar as representações sociais de conhecimento em enfermagem, na perspetiva dos estudantes de enfermagem;
Influence of HOTAIR rs920778 and rs12826786 genetic variants on prostate cancer risk and progression-free survival
Aim: Evaluate the impact of the single nucleotide polymorphisms rs920778 and rs12826786 in the long
noncoding RNA HOTAIR in the susceptibility and prognosis of prostate cancer (PCa) patients. Patients
& methods: HOTAIR single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped by restriction fragment length
polymorphism in 151 PCa cases and 180 cancer-free controls. Odds ratio, 95% CIs and prognostic significance were calculated. Results: Our data showed no statistically significant associations between HOTAIR
polymorphic variants in rs920778 and rs12826786 and PCa susceptibility. However, the CC genotype in
rs12826786 was significantly associated with shorter biochemical recurrence-free survival in pT3-stage PCa
patients. Conclusion: Our results indicate that HOTAIR rs12826786 CC genotype may be an independent
prognostic biomarker in a particular subset of PCa tumors.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (IF/00601/2012 to BM Costa; SFRH/BD/52287/2013 to AI Oliveira; SFRH/BD/88220/2012 to AX Magalhaes), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (BM Costa), Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro (BM Costa) and Inter-University Doctoral Programme in Ageing and Chronic Disease (PhDOC; to AI Oliveira and AX Magalhaes). New liquid supports in the development of integrated platforms for the reuse of oxidative enzymes and polydopamine production
Polydopamine (PDA), a bioinspired polymer from mussel adhesive proteins, has attracted impressive attention as a novel coating for (nano) materials with an adequate conformal layer and adjustable thickness. Currently, PDA is obtained from dopamine chemical oxidation under alkaline conditions, limiting its use in materials sensible to alkaline environments. Envisaging a widespread use of PDA, the polymerization of dopamine by enzymatic catalysis allows the dopamine polymerization in a large range of pHs, overcoming thus the limitations of conventional chemical oxidation. Moreover, the conventional method of polymerization is a time-consuming process and produces PDA films with poor stability, which restricts its applications. On the other hand, the main bottleneck of enzyme-based biocatalytic processes is the high cost of the single use of the enzyme. In this work, laccase was used to catalyse dopamine polymerization. To improve its performance, a liquid support for integrating the laccase and its reuse together with the PDA production and recovery was developed using aqueous biphasic systems (ABS). Firstly, dopamine polymerization by laccase was optimized in terms of pH, temperature and initial dopamine concentration. It was demonstrated that the highest enzymatic polymerization of dopamine was achieved at pH 5.5, 30°C and 2 mg ml−1 of dopamine. Then, ABS composed of polymers, salts and ionic liquids were evaluated to optimize the laccase confinement in one phase while PDA is recovered in the opposite phase. The most promising ABS allowing the separation of laccase from the reaction product is composed of polypropylene glycol (400 g mol−1) and K2HPO4. The polymerization of dopamine in ABS leads to a remarkable improvement of polymerization of 3.9-fold in comparison to the conventional chemical PDA polymerization. The phase containing the confined laccase was reused for four consecutive reaction cycles, with a relative polymerization of 68.9% in the last cycle. The results of this work proved that ABS are a promising approach to create a liquid support for enzyme reuse allowing the process intensification efforts. The use of biocatalysts in ABS emerges as sustainable and alternative platforms from environmental and techno-economic points of view.publishe
Attachment to parents, romantic relationships, lifestyle, physical and mental health in university students
This study focused on the understanding of the relationship among attachment to parents, characteristics of romantic relationships, physical symptoms, lifestyle and psychological morbidity in 250 university students, aged between 17 and 29 years (M=20.88; SD=2.03), who answered self-report questionnaires. We concluded that attachment to parents for young adults is related to physical symptoms, psychological morbidity and characteristics of romantic relationships. Being in a romantic relationship has effects on health, since it is related to a healthier lifestyle and less physical symptoms. We explored the predictors of physical symptoms and lifestyle, and analyzed the influence of sex, type of family and socioeconomic status on the variables studied. As a result, implications can be drawn to develop interventions with youngsters and parents
New spectral data of some flavonoids from Deguelia hatschbachii A.M.G. Azevedo
From the roots of Deguelia hatschbachii, the known flavonoids scandenin (1), methyl robustate (2) and 4',5- dihydroxy-6-(3,3-dimethylalyll)-7-methoxy flavanone (3) were isolated and characterized by comparison of their spectroscopic data with those found in the literature. Now the inclusion of 1D- and 2D-NMR and MS/MS data has allowed the complete assignment of all hydrogen and carbon chemical shifts in their NMR spectra, as well as the elucidation of the fragmentation pathways of 1-3 in the mass spectrometer.
Embedding Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes as Conductive Nanofiller onto Bi2Te3 Thermoelectric Matrix
Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) are devices that have the ability to directly convert heat into electrical power, or vice-versa, and are being envisaged as one off-the-grid power source. Furthermore, carbon-based materials have been used as a conducting filler to improve several properties in thermoelectric materials. The present work studied the influence on the thermoelectric performance of Bi2Te3 bulk materials by incorporating different concentrations of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT). In order to control and understand the influence of MWCNT dispersion in the nanocomposite, two different production methods (manual grinding and ultrasonication) were carried out and compared. It was verified that a larger dispersion leads to a better outcome for thermoelectric performance. The achieved Seebeck coefficient was up to -162 μV K-1 with a Power Factor of 0.50 μW K-2m-1, for the nanocomposite produced with 11.8 %V of MWCNT. This result demonstrates the ability to increase the thermoelectric performance of Bi2Te3 throughout the addition of MWCNT
Evolutionary genetics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV-1: “The Tortoise and the Hare”
The already enormous burden caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) alone is aggravated by co-infection. Despite obvious differences in
the rate of evolution comparing these two human pathogens, genetic diversity plays an important
role in the success of both. The extreme evolutionary dynamics of HIV-1 is in the basis of a robust
capacity to evade immune responses, to generate drug-resistance and to diversify the populationlevel reservoir of M group viral subtypes. Compared to HIV-1 and other retroviruses, M. tuberculosis
generates minute levels of genetic diversity within the host. However, emerging whole-genome
sequencing data show that the M. tuberculosis complex contains at least nine human-adapted phylogenetic lineages. This level of genetic diversity results in differences in M. tuberculosis interactions
with the host immune system, virulence and drug resistance propensity. In co-infected individuals,
HIV-1 and M. tuberculosis are likely to co-colonize host cells. However, the evolutionary impact of
the interaction between the host, the slowly evolving M. tuberculosis bacteria and the HIV-1 viral
“mutant cloud” is poorly understood. These evolutionary dynamics, at the cellular niche of monocytes/macrophages, are also discussed and proposed as a relevant future research topic in the context
of single-cell sequencing. This work has been funded by National funds, through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)—project UIDB/50026/2020 and UIDP/50026/2020; by the projects NORTE-01- 0145-FEDER-000013 and NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000023, supported by Norte Portugal Regional

Evaluating the fire behaviour of cement-based lightweight materials with textile waste incorporation using a cone calorimeter
The conscientious utilization of natural resources and the efficient waste management have
become a matter of great concern in recent years due to the harmful impacts on the environment.
The construction sector presents itself as one of the sectors that most contributes to raw materials
consumption and waste generation, demanding the investigation of more sustainable and ecofriendly
building materials, where the valorisation of wastes originated from other industries
can be promising. Following the sustainability concept in construction materials, this work investigates
the potential use of textile waste in cement-based lightweight construction material,
evaluating the fire reaction of the material using the cone calorimeter equipment. The samples
were tested at three different radiant heat fluxes (35 kW/m2, 50 kW/m2, 75 kW/m2) to simulate
different fire situations. For the highest heat flux, the lightweight construction element with
textile waste incorporation showed a Heat Release Rate Average ≤ 18 kW/m2, a peak Heat
Release Rate Average ≤ 60 kW/m2, and a Total Heat Release Average ≤ 33 MJ/m2. These results
reveal a very satisfactory fire behaviour compared to other materials and show the suitability of
using textile waste as lightweight cement-based materials.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
