    Polymeric Squaraine Dyes as Electron Donors in Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

    A polysquaraine low band gap polymer was synthesized by Yamamoto coupling of a monomeric dibromo indolenine squaraine dye. The resulting polymer has a weight average molar mass in the order of Mw ~30.000-50.000 and a polydispersity of ca. 1.7 as determined by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC). The electronic properties of monomer and polymer were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy. Owing to exciton coupling the absorption bands of the polymer are red-shifted and strongly broadened compared to the monomer squaraine dye. Bulk heterojunction solar cells were prepared from blends of the polysquaraine with the fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in different weight ratios (1:3 to 1:1). The power conversion efficiencies under simulated AM 1.5 conditions yielded 0.45 % for these non-optimized systems. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) shows that the photoresponse spans the range from 300 to 850 nm, which illustrates the promising properties of this novel organic semiconductor as a low band gap donor material in organic photovoltaics.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    One-dimensional semiconductor in a polar solvent: Solvation and low-frequency dynamics of an excess charge carrier

    Due to solvation, excess charge carriers on 1d semiconductor nanostructures immersed in polar solvents undergo self-localization into polaronic states. Using a simplified theoretical model for small-diameter structures, we study low-frequency properties of resulting 1d adiabatic polarons. The combined microscopic dynamics of the electronic charge density and the solvent leads to macroscopic Langevin dynamics of a polaron and to the appearance of local dielectric relaxation modes. Polaron mobility is evaluated as a function of system parameters. Numerical estimates indicate that the solvated carriers can have mobilities orders of magnitude lower than the intrinsic values.Comment: Typo in Eq.(12) has been correcte

    Quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence induced by silver nanoparticles

    The interaction between chlorophyll (Chl) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was evaluated by analyzing the optical behavior of Chl molecules surrounded by different concentrations of AgNPs (10, 60, and 100 nm of diameter). UV–Vis absorption, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements were performed for Chl in the presence and absence of these nanoparticles. AgNPs strongly suppressed the Chl fluorescence intensity at 678 nm. The Stern-Volmer constant (KSV) showed that fluorescence suppression is driven by the dynamic quenching process. In particular, KSV was nanoparticle size-dependent with an exponential decrease as a function of the nanoparticle diameter. Finally, changes in the Chl fluorescence lifetime in the presence of nanoparticles demonstrated that the fluorescence quenching may be induced by the excited electron transfer from the Chl molecules to the metal nanoparticles

    Delaminated CoAl-Layered Double Hydroxide@TiO2 Heterojunction Nanocomposites for CO2 Photocatalytic Reduction

    Photocatalytic reduction offers an attractive route for CO2 utilization as a chemical feedstock for solar fuels production but remains challenging due to the poor efficiency, instability, and/or toxicity of current catalyst systems. Delaminated CoAl-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDH-DS) combined with TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) or nanoparticles (NPs) are promising nanocomposite photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Heterojunction formation between visible light absorbing delaminated CoAl nanosheets and UV light absorbing TiO2 nanotubes greatly enhances interfacial contact between both high aspect ratio components relative to their bulk counterparts. The resulting synergic interaction confers a significant improvement in photoinduced charge carrier separation, and concomitant aqueous phase CO2 photocatalytic reduction, in the absence of a sacrificial hole acceptor. CO productivity for a 3 wt% LDH-DS@TiO2-NT nanocomposite of 4.57 ÎĽmol gcat -1 h-1 exhibits a tenfold and fivefold increase over that obtained for individual TiO2 NT and delaminated CoAl-LDH components respectively and is double that obtained for 3 wt% bulk-LDH@TiO2-NT and 3 wt% LDH-DS@TiO2-NP catalysts.     Child malaria treatment decisions by mothers of children less than five years of age attending an outpatient clinic in south-west Nigeria: an application of the PEN-3 cultural model

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Using the PEN-3 cultural model, this study sought to understand mothers treatment decisions about their child febrile illness by examining positive health beliefs and practices held by mothers, examine existential (unique) practices that are indigenous to mothers and have no harmful health consequences, and explore negative beliefs and practices that limit recommended responses to febrile illness in children.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This qualitative study was conducted in the paediatric section of an outpatient clinic in south-west Nigeria. A total of 123 mothers with children less than five years of age with febrile illness diagnosed as malaria by physicians were individually interviewed on their treatment-seeking practices prior to visiting the clinic and their reasons for attendance at the clinic.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>For some mothers interviewed, effective treatment from the clinic for their child's febrile illness, coupled with physician's approach with malaria diagnosis and treatment practices was important in generating positive maternal treatment-seeking responses to child febrile illness. In addition, beliefs related to a child teething highlighted existential decisions with treatment-seeking for child febrile illness in this setting. Finally, the belief that febrile illness is not all that severe despite noticeable signs and symptoms was a concerning negative perception shared by some mothers in this study.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings highlight the need to consider not only the responses that may serve as barriers to effective treatment, but also an acknowledgment of the positive and existential responses that are equally critical in influencing mothers' management of malaria in their children.</p

    An assessment of the malaria-related knowledge and practices of Tanzania's drug retailers: exploring the impact of drug store accreditation.

    BACKGROUND: Since 2003 Tanzania has upgraded its approximately 7000 drug stores to Accredited Drug Dispensing Outlets (ADDOs), involving dispenser training, introduction of record keeping and enhanced regulation. Prior to accreditation, drug stores could officially stock over-the-counter medicines only, though many stocked prescription-only antimalarials. ADDOs are permitted to stock 49 prescription-only medicines, including artemisinin combination therapies and one form of quinine injectable. Oral artemisinin monotherapies and other injectables were not permitted at any time. By late 2011 conversion was complete in 14 of 21 regions. We explored variation in malaria-related knowledge and practices of drug retailers in ADDO and non-ADDO regions. METHODS: Data were collected as part of the Independent Evaluation of the Affordable Medicines Facility - malaria (AMFm), involving a nationally representative survey of antimalarial retailers in October-December 2011. We randomly selected 49 wards and interviewed all drug stores stocking antimalarials. We compare ADDO and non-ADDO regions, excluding the largest city, Dar es Salaam, due to the unique characteristics of its market. RESULTS: Interviews were conducted in 133 drug stores in ADDO regions and 119 in non-ADDO regions. Staff qualifications were very similar in both areas. There was no significant difference in the availability of the first line antimalarial (68.9% in ADDO regions and 65.2% in non-ADDO regions); both areas had over 98% availability of non-artemisinin therapies and below 3.0% of artemisinin monotherapies. Staff in ADDO regions had better knowledge of the first line antimalarial than non-ADDO regions (99.5% and 91.5%, p = 0.001). There was weak evidence of a lower price and higher market share of the first line antimalarial in ADDO regions. Drug stores in ADDO regions were more likely to stock ADDO-certified injectables than those in non-ADDO regions (23.0% and 3.9%, p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: ADDO conversion is frequently cited as a model for improving retail sector drug provision. Drug stores in ADDO regions performed better on some indicators, possibly indicating some small benefits from ADDO conversion, but also weaknesses in ADDO regulation and high staff turnover. More evidence is needed on the value-added and value for money of the ADDO roll out to inform retail policy in Tanzania and elsewhere

    Role of mid-gap states in charge transport and photoconductivity in semiconductor nanocrystal films

    Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have attracted significant interest for applications in solution-processable devices such as light-emitting diodes and solar cells. However, a poor understanding of charge transport in nanocrystal assemblies, specifically the relation between electrical conductance in dark and under light illumination, hinders their technological applicability. Here we simultaneously address the issues of 'dark' transport and photoconductivity in films of PbS nanocrystals, by incorporating them into optical field-effect transistors in which the channel conductance is controlled by both gate voltage and incident radiation. Spectrally resolved photoresponses of these devices reveal a weakly conductive mid-gap band that is responsible for charge transport in dark. The mechanism for conductance, however, changes under illumination when it becomes dominated by band-edge quantized states. In this case, the mid-gap band still has an important role as its occupancy (tuned by the gate voltage) controls the dynamics of band-edge charges
