Effect of Cross-Diffusion on the Stability of a Triple-Diffusive Oldroyd-B Fluid Layer

    Get PDF
The onset and stability of a triple cross-diffusive viscoelastic fluid layer is investigated. The rheology of viscoelastic fluid is approximated by the nonlinear Oldroyd-B constitutive equation which encompasses Maxwell and Newtonian fluid models as special cases. By performing the linear instability analysis, analytical expression for the occurrence of stationary and oscillatory convection is obtained. The numerical results show that the elasticity and cross-diffusion effects reinforce together in displaying complex dynamical behavior on the system. The presence of cross-diffusion is found to either stabilize or destabilize the system depending on the strength of species concentration as well as elasticity of the fluid and also alters the nature of convective instability. The disconnected closed oscillatory neutral curve lying well below the stationary neutral curve is observed to be convex in its shape in contrast to quasiperiodic bifurcation from the quiescent basic state noted in the case of Newtonian fluids. This striking feature is attributed to the viscoelasticity of the fluid. By performing a weakly nonlinear stability analysis, the stability of bifurcating solution is discussed. It is worth reporting that the viscoelastic parameters significantly influence the stability of stationary bifurcation though the stationary onset is unaffected by viscoelasticity. Besides, subcritical instability is occurs and the critical Rayleigh number at which such an instability is possible decreases in the presence of cross-diffusion terms. The results of Maxwell and Newtonian fluids are delineated as particular cases from the present study

Taila kalpana has widely used dosage form described in Ayurvedic formulations for both external and internal use. Taila murchana is the first step of Taila preparation. Murchana has been adopted for enhancing the potency of oil and to remove the bad odour and Amadosa. In classics Tailas like Tilataila (sesame), Eranda (Castor) taila, Katu (Mustard) Taila needs Murchanaas preliminary process of Taila paaka. It has been mentioned in detail for the first time in Bhaishajya Ratnavali. Fat/Water soluble active principles of drugs are extracted into medicated oil in this method. Taila with Murchana are having more therapeutic potency and shelf life than crude Taila. The process of Murchana has high significance in today's scenario of globalization and the urge for better therapeutic efficacy. Hence the process of Murchana must be strictly included as the prerequisites of any medicated oil preparations. In this article an attempt has been done to review concepts regarding Taila murchana in literature of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics

Modelling of Red Giant Stars: The state-of-the-art

    Get PDF
The seismic data obtained by the CoRoT and Kepler space missions have provided inferences of the global and structural properties of thousands of red giants. When compared with stellar model predictions, these inferences can significantly improve our understanding of stellar evolution. We present a brief review of the structure and evolution of red giant stars, devoting some emphasis on the major, still open problems

The global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors, 2010–19: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

BACKGROUND: Understanding the magnitude of cancer burden attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors is crucial for development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies. We analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to inform cancer control planning efforts globally. METHODS: The GBD 2019 comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate cancer burden attributable to behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risk factors. A total of 82 risk–outcome pairs were included on the basis of the World Cancer Research Fund criteria. Estimated cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 and change in these measures between 2010 and 2019 are presented. FINDINGS: Globally, in 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4·45 million (95% uncertainty interval 4·01–4·94) deaths and 105 million (95·0–116) DALYs for both sexes combined, representing 44·4% (41·3–48·4) of all cancer deaths and 42·0% (39·1–45·6) of all DALYs. There were 2·88 million (2·60–3·18) risk-attributable cancer deaths in males (50·6% [47·8–54·1] of all male cancer deaths) and 1·58 million (1·36–1·84) risk-attributable cancer deaths in females (36·3% [32·5–41·3] of all female cancer deaths). The leading risk factors at the most detailed level globally for risk-attributable cancer deaths and DALYs in 2019 for both sexes combined were smoking, followed by alcohol use and high BMI. Risk-attributable cancer burden varied by world region and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), with smoking, unsafe sex, and alcohol use being the three leading risk factors for risk-attributable cancer DALYs in low SDI locations in 2019, whereas DALYs in high SDI locations mirrored the top three global risk factor rankings. From 2010 to 2019, global risk-attributable cancer deaths increased by 20·4% (12·6–28·4) and DALYs by 16·8% (8·8–25·0), with the greatest percentage increase in metabolic risks (34·7% [27·9–42·8] and 33·3% [25·8–42·0]). INTERPRETATION: The leading risk factors contributing to global cancer burden in 2019 were behavioural, whereas metabolic risk factors saw the largest increases between 2010 and 2019. Reducing exposure to these modifiable risk factors would decrease cancer mortality and DALY rates worldwide, and policies should be tailored appropriately to local cancer risk factor burden

Effect of gravity modulation on electrothermal convection in a dielectric fluid saturated anisotropic porous layer

    No full text
This paper deals with linear and nonlinear stability analyses of thermal convection in a dielectric fluid saturated anisotropic Brinkman porous layer subject to the combined effect of AC electric field and time-periodic gravity modulation (GM). In the realm of linear theory, the critical stability parameters are computed by regular perturbation method. The local nonlinear theory based on truncated Fourier series method gives the information of convection amplitudes and heat transfer. Principle of exchange of stabilities is found to be valid and subcritical instability is ruled out. Based on the governing linear autonomous system several qualitative results on stability are discussed. The sensitive dependence of the solution of Lorenz system of electrothermal convection to the choice of initial conditions points to the possibility of chaos. Low frequency g-jitter is found to have significant stabilizing influence which is in turn diminished by an imposed AC electric field. The role of other governing parameters on the stability threshold and on transient heat transfer is determined. © 2014 by ASME

Effect of thermal modulation on the onset of convection in a viscoelastic fluid saturated porous layer

    No full text
The effect of thermal modulation on the onset of convection in a horizontal, anisotropic porous layer saturated by a viscoelastic fluid is investigated by a linear stability analysis. Darcy's law with viscoelastic correction is used to describe the fluid motion. The perturbation method is used to find the critical Rayleigh number and the corresponding wavenumber for small amplitude thermal modulation. The stability of the system characterized by a correction Rayleigh number is calculated as a function of the thermal and mechanical anisotropy parameters, the viscoelastic parameters and the frequency of modulation. It is found that the onset of convection can be delayed or advanced by the factors represented by these parameters. The results of the problem have possible implications in mantle convection. © Springer 2006
