A Theoretical Formation of Emotional Intelligence and Childhood Trauma among Adolescents

Problem Statement: Much has been documented on the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) on adolescents in terms of their problem-solving skills (Ajawani, 2012), creativity (Vijaykumar, 2012), and academic performance (Shenoy & Thingujam, 2012). Increasingly, emphasis has been paid on the effect of EI on health among this population. For example, EI has been shown to interact with personality traits to affect psychological well-being (Salami, 2012). EI, based on literature focusing on the adult population, shows that it is a protective factor and can buffer against psychological distress (e.g. Hunt & Evans, 2004; Schmidt & Andrykowski, 2004). However, little is known regarding the role that EI could play in influencing such outcome among traumatized adolescents. Whilst one study has shown that low EI predicted the likelihood for being bullied by peers (Lomas et.al, 2012), no research has focused on the effect of childhood trauma. To what extent EI could interact with the experience of childhood trauma in influencing different degrees of psychological distress among adolescents is unknown.Purpose of Study: The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it aims to provide a brief review of literature pertaining to the relationship between psychological well-being and emotional intelligence among adolescents. Secondly, it aims to point out the gap in research looking at the link between EI and childhood trauma and to formulate a theoretical model for understanding the foregoing relationship. The theoretical postulate is integrated with theories from trauma and EI literature. In brief, it postulates that the experience of childhood trauma would have a significant impact on the development of traumatized self (Brewin, 2002) among these adolescents. This traumatized self is characterized by altered self-capacities of which interpersonal conflicts or difficulties with oneself and others are part (Briere & Spinazolli, 2005).Conclusions: This would hinder the development of EI which would in turn affect different degrees of psychological well-being. This theoretical model will be relevant for not only researchers investigating childhood trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in general but also it will have significant clinical implications for counselor and psychotherapists who work with adolescent

Strong WW Scattering at Photon Linear Colliders

We investigate the possibility of observing strong interactions of longitudinally polarized weak vector bosons in the process γγZZ\gamma \gamma \to ZZ at a photon linear collider. We make use of polarization of the photon beams and cuts on the decay products of the ZZ bosons to enhance the signal relative to the background of transversely polarized ZZZZ pairs. We find that the background overwhelms the signal unless there are strong resonant effects, as for instance from a technicolor analogue of the hadronic f2(1270)f_2(1270) meson.Comment: 13 pages including 6 figures (uuencoded), some rewording to the text, LBL-35746, MAD/PH/83

Production of Weak Bosons and Higgs Bosons at e-e- Colliders

We present calculations of cross sections for single WW^- and ZZ production and WW,WZ,Wγ,ZZW^-W^-, W^-Z, W^-\gamma, ZZ, and W+WW^+W^- pair production within the Standard Model at eee^-e^- linear colliders. We evaluate Standard-Model Higgs boson production in the channels eeeeHe^-e^- \to e^-e^- H, eνWHe^-\nu W^- H, and eeZHe^-e^- ZH. We also illustrate the enhancements in the WWW^-W^- cross section that would result from a strongly-interacting Higgs sector or from a HH^{--} resonance in a Higgs doublet + triplet model.Comment: Standard Latex, 19 pages of text. 11 postscript figures included; hardcopies by fax or mail available upon request. Spin configuration of top quark pair production with large extra dimensions at photon-photon colliders

Top quark pair production at photon-photon colliders is studied in low scale quantum gravity scenario. From the dependence of the cross sections on the spin configuration of the top quark and anti-quark, we introduce a new observable, top spin asymmetry. It is shown that there exists a special top spin basis where with the polarized parent electron beams the top spin asymmetry vanishes in the standard model but retains substantial values with the large extra dimension effects. We also present lower bounds of the quantum gravity scale MSM_S from total cross sections with various combinations of the laser, electron beam, and top quark pair polarizations. The measurements of the top spin state (ttˉ)(t_\uparrow\bar{t}_\downarrow) with unpolarized initial beams are shown to be most effective, enhancing by about 5% the MSM_S bounds with respect to totally unpolarized case.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, ReVTe

Hydrophobic and ionic-interactions in bulk and confined water with implications for collapse and folding of proteins

Water and water-mediated interactions determine thermodynamic and kinetics of protein folding, protein aggregation and self-assembly in confined spaces. To obtain insights into the role of water in the context of folding problems, we describe computer simulations of a few related model systems. The dynamics of collapse of eicosane shows that upon expulsion of water the linear hydrocarbon chain adopts an ordered helical hairpin structure with 1.5 turns. The structure of dimer of eicosane molecules has two well ordered helical hairpins that are stacked perpendicular to each other. As a prelude to studying folding in confined spaces we used simulations to understand changes in hydrophobic and ionic interactions in nano droplets. Solvation of hydrophobic and charged species change drastically in nano water droplets. Hydrophobic species are localized at the boundary. The tendency of ions to be at the boundary where water density is low increases as the charge density decreases. Interaction between hydrophobic, polar, and charged residue are also profoundly altered in confined spaces. Using the results of computer simulations and accounting for loss of chain entropy upon confinement we argue and then demonstrate, using simulations in explicit water, that ordered states of generic amphiphilic peptide sequences should be stabilized in cylindrical nanopores

Z boson pair production at LHC in a stabilized Randall-Sundrum scenario

We study the Z boson pair production at LHC in the Randall-Sundrum scenario with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. It is shown that comprehensive account of the Kaluza-Klein graviton and radion effects is crucial to probe the model: The KK graviton effects enhance the cross section of ggZZg g \to Z Z on the whole so that the resonance peak of the radion becomes easy to detect, whereas the RS effects on the qqˉZZq\bar{q} \to Z Z process are rather insignificant. The pTp_T and invariant-mass distributions are presented to study the dependence of the RS model parameters. The production of longitudinally polarized Z bosons, to which the SM contributions are suppressed, is mainly due to KK gravitons and the radion, providing one of the most robust methods to signal the RS effects. The 1σ1 \sigma sensitivity bounds on (Λπ,mϕ)(\Lambda_\pi, m_\phi) with k/MPl=0.1k/M_{\rm Pl} =0.1 are also obtained such that the effective weak scale Λπ\Lambda_\pi of order 5 TeV can be experimentally probed.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex file, 18 eps figure

    Iridium-catalyzed C–H borylation of pyridines

    Get PDF
The iridium-catalysed C–H borylation is a valuable and attractive method for the preparation of aryl and heteroaryl boronates. However, application of this methodology for the preparation of pyridyl and related azinyl boronates can be challenged by low reactivity and propensity for rapid protodeborylation, particularly for a boronate ester ortho to the azinyl nitrogen. Competition experiments have revealed that the low reactivity is due to inhibition of the active catalyst through coordination of the azinyl nitrogen lone pair at the vacant site on the iridium. This effect can be overcome through the incorporation of a substituent at C-2. Moreover, when this is sufficiently electron-withdrawing protodeborylation is sufficiently slowed to permit isolation and purification of the C-6 boronate ester. Following functionalization, reduction of the directing C-2 substituent provides the product arising from formal ortho borylation of an unhindered pyridine ring

Searching for a light Fermiophobic Higgs Boson at the Tevatron

We propose new production mechanisms for light fermiophobic Higgs bosons (hfh_f) with suppressed couplings to vector bosons (VV) at the Fermilab Tevatron. These mechanisms (e.g. qqH±hfqq'\to H^\pm h_f) are complementary to the conventional process qqVhfqq'\to Vh_f, which suffers from a strong suppression of 1/tan2β1/\tan^2\beta in realistic models with a hfh_f. The new mechanisms extend the coverage at the Tevatron Run II to the larger tanβ\tan\beta region, and offer the possibility of observing new event topologies with up to 4 photons.Comment: 15 pages, including 5 eps-figure

Associated production of neutral toppion with a pair of heavy quarks in γγ\gamma\gamma collisions

We have studied a neutral toppion production process γγffˉΠt0(f=t,b)\gamma\gamma\to f\bar{f}\Pi_{t}^{0}(f=t,b) in the topcolor-assisted technicolor(TC2) model. We find that the cross section of γγttˉΠt0\gamma\gamma\to t\bar{t}\Pi_{t}^{0} is much larger than that of γγbbˉΠt0\gamma\gamma\to b\bar{b}\Pi_{t}^{0}. On the other hand, the cross section can be obviously enhanced with the increasing of c.m.energy. With s=1600\sqrt{s}=1600 GeV, the cross section of ttˉΠt0t\bar{t}\Pi_t^0 production can reach the level of a few fb. The results show that γγttˉΠt0ttˉ(tcˉ)\gamma\gamma\to t\bar{t}\Pi^0_t \to t\bar{t}(t\bar{c}) is the most ideal channel to detect neutral toppion due to the clean SM background. With such sufficient signals and clean background, neutral toppion could be detected at TESLA with high c.m.energy.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
