    Resonant Raman scattering off neutral quantum dots

    Resonant inelastic (Raman) light scattering off neutral GaAs quantum dots which contain a mean number, N=42, of electron-hole pairs is computed. We find Raman amplitudes corresponding to strongly collective final states (charge-density excitations) of similar magnitude as the amplitudes related to weakly collective or single-particle excitations. As a function of the incident laser frequency or the magnetic field, they are rapidly varying amplitudes. It is argued that strong Raman peaks should come out in the spin-density channels, not related to valence-band mixing effects in the intermediate states.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review

    Modelling the future of the Hawaiian honeycreeper : an ecological and epidemiological problem

    The Hawaiian honeycreeper (Drepanididae) faces the threat of extinction; this is believed to be due primarily to predation from alien animals, endemic avian malaria (Plasmodium relictum) and climate change. A deterministic SI modelling approach is developed, incorporating these three factors and a metapopulation approach in conjunction with a quasi-equilibrium assumption to simplify the vector populations. This enables the qualitative study of the behaviour of the system. Numerical results suggest that although (partial) resistance to avian malaria may be advantageous for individual birds, allowing them to survive infection, this allows them to become carriers of infection and hence greatly increases the spread of this disease. Predation obviously reduces the life-expectancy of honeycreepers, but in turn this reduces the spread of infection from resistant carriers; therefore the population-level impact of predation is reduced. Various control strategies proposed in the literature are also considered and it is shown that predation control could either help or hinter, depending upon resistance of the honeycreeper species. Captive propagation or habitat restoration may be the best feasible solution to the loss of both heterogeneity within the population and the loss of the species as a whole

    Berezinians, Exterior Powers and Recurrent Sequences

    We study power expansions of the characteristic function of a linear operator AA in a pqp|q-dimensional superspace VV. We show that traces of exterior powers of AA satisfy universal recurrence relations of period qq. `Underlying' recurrence relations hold in the Grothendieck ring of representations of \GL(V). They are expressed by vanishing of certain Hankel determinants of order q+1q+1 in this ring, which generalizes the vanishing of sufficiently high exterior powers of an ordinary vector space. In particular, this allows to explicitly express the Berezinian of an operator as a rational function of traces. We analyze the Cayley--Hamilton identity in a superspace.     Assessing regional variation in yield from weathered basement aquifers in West Africa and modelling their future groundwater development and sustainability

    A data-driven modelling approach was applied to quantify the potential groundwater yield from weathered crystalline basement aquifers in West Africa, which are a strategic resource for achieving water and food security. To account for possible geological control on aquifer productivity, seven major geological domains were identified based on lithological, stratigraphic, and structural characteristics of the crystalline basement. Extensive data mining was conducted for the hydrogeological parameterisation that led to the identification of representative distributions of input parameters for numerical simulations of groundwater abstractions. These were calibrated to match distributions of measured yields for each domain. Calibrated models were then applied to investigate aquifer and borehole scenarios to assess groundwater productivity. Considering the entire region, modelling results indicate that approximately 50% of well-sited standard 60-m-deep boreholes could sustain yields exceeding 0.5 L/s, and 25% could sustain the yield required for small irrigation systems (> 1.0 L/s). Results also highlighted some regional differences in the ranges of productivities for the different domains, and the significance of the depth of the static water table and the lateral extent of aquifers across all geological domains. This approach can be applied to derive groundwater maps for the region and provide the quantitative information required to evaluate the potential of different designs of groundwater supply networks

    Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) in layered soils: a Material Point approach

    Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) can be used to determine in-situ soil properties and represent a practical choice for site investigation offshore, especially for linear infrastructure, such as offshore wind export cables. Information gained from CPTs is key for predicting soil-structure interaction behaviour, for example when predicting the tow forces involved in seabed ploughing, as the CPT provides an analogue to the process. The numerical modelling of CPTs is challenging due to the significant distortion in the soil displaced by the penetrating cone. This means that solving this sort of problem using finite elements, although not impossible, is numerically tiresome in terms of remeshing and mapping of state variables. Therefore, in this paper we adopt the Material Point Method (MPM) to develop a CPT prediction tool in layered soils. This MPM is combined with a novel non-matching mesh frictional boundary to represent the penetrometer. The developed tool will be used to understand the response of layered soils commonly found offshore as a step towards predicting the interaction of ploughs and anchors with the seabed

    Dietary Liberalization in Tetrahydrobiopterin-Treated PKU Patients:Does It Improve Outcomes?

    Purpose: this systematic review aimed to assess the effects of dietary liberalization following tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) treatment on anthropometric measurements, nutritional biomarkers, quality of life, bone density, mental health and psychosocial functioning, and burden of care in PKU patients. Methods: the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases were searched on 7 April 2022. We included studies that reported on the aforementioned domains before and after dietary liberalization as a result of BH4 treatment in PKU patients. Exclusion criteria were: studies written in a language other than English; studies that only included data of a BH4 loading test; insufficient data for the parameters of interest; and wrong publication type. Both within-subject and between-subject analyses were assessed, and meta-analyses were performed if possible. Results: twelve studies containing 14 cohorts and 228 patients were included. Single studies reported few significant differences. Two out of fifteen primary meta-analyses were significant; BMI was higher in BH4-treated patients versus controls (p = 0.02; standardized mean difference (SMD) (95% confidence interval (CI)) = −0.37 (−0.67, −0.06)), and blood cholesterol concentrations increased after starting BH4 treatment (p = 0.01; SMD (CI) = −0.70 (−1.26, −0.15)). Conclusion: there is no clear evidence that dietary liberalization after BH4 treatment has a positive effect on anthropometric measurements, nutritional biomarkers, or quality of life. No studies could be included for bone density, mental health and psychosocial functioning, and burden of care

    Composite Spin Waves, Quasi-Particles and Low Temperature resistivity in Double Exchange Systems

    We make a quantum description of the electron low temperature properties of double exchange materials. In these systems there is a strong coupling between the core spin and the carriers spin. This large coupling makes the low energy spin waves to be a combination of ion and electron density spin waves. We study the form and dispersion of these composite spin wave excitations. We also analyze the spin up and down spectral functions of the temperature dependent quasi-particles of this system. Finally we obtain that the thermally activated composite spin waves renormalize the carriers effective mass and this gives rise to a low temperature resistivity scaling as T ^{5/2}.Comment: 4 pages, REVTE
