Deep Herschel view of obscured star formation in the Bullet cluster
We use deep, five band (100â500 ÎŒm) data from the Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) to fully constrain the obscured star formation rate, SFRFIR, of galaxies in the Bullet cluster (z = 0.296), and a smaller background system (z = 0.35) in the same field. Herschel detects 23 Bullet cluster members with a total SFRFIR = 144±14 yr-1. On average, the background system contains brighter far-infrared (FIR) galaxies, with ~50% higher SFRFIR (21 galaxies; 207± 9 yr-1). SFRs extrapolated from 24 ÎŒm flux via recent templates (SFR24 ”m) agree well with SFRFIR for ~60% of the cluster galaxies. In the remaining ~40%, SFR24 ”m underestimates SFRFIR due to a significant excess in observed S100/S24 (rest frame S75/S18) compared to templates of the same FIR luminosity
Wolverhampton urban environmental survey : an integrated geoscientific case study
Geoscience and land use information for the Metropolitan Borough of Wolverhampton have been collated,
with the assistance of the Metropolitan Authority, and interpreted with the aid of a Geographical
Information System (GIS). The digital data can be rapidly manipulated within the GIS to produce
customised thematic maps of the urban area.
The report is a summary of a study undertaken in the Borough over a period of three years, and is supported
by a number of satellite reports which describe in more detail different aspects of the work.
The Borough of Wolverhampton lies on the western edge of the South Staffordshire Coalfield. The Western
Boundary Fault bisects the Borough and marks the edge of the exposed coalfield. To the west of this
structure the Coal Measures are concealed by a thick sequence of Upper Carboniferous and Permo-Triassic
redbeds. Glacial deposits, mainly clay-rich till with subordinate sands, gravels and laminated clays, cover
much of the area. The till is of variable thickness but due to its impermeability it affords some protection
to the migration of potential contaminants. Spoil and waste (made ground) from former coal workings cover
much of the eastern part of the Borough which is also extensively undermined. Thematic maps indicating
the extent and depth of the made ground, depth of till, extent of undermining and location of landfill sites
provide useful planning information

Discovery of a multiply lensed submillimeter galaxy in early HerMES Herschel/SPIRE data
âIn these times, during the rise in the popularity of institutional repositories, the Society does not forbid authors from depositing their work in such repositories. However, the AAS regards the deposit of scholarly work in such repositories to be a decision of the individual scholar, as long as the individual's actions respect the diligence of the journals and their reviewers.â Original article can be found at: http://iopscience.iop.org/ Copyright American Astronomical SocietyWe report the discovery of a bright (f (250 ÎŒm)>400 mJy), multiply lensed submillimeter galaxy HERMES J105751.1+573027 in Herschel/SPIRE Science Demonstration Phase data from the HerMES project. Interferometric 880 ÎŒm Submillimeter Array observations resolve at least four images with a large separation of âŒ9âł. A high-resolution adaptive optics Kp image with Keck/NIRC2 clearly shows strong lensing arcs. Follow-up spectroscopy gives a redshift of z = 2.9575, and the lensing model gives a total magnification of ÎŒ ⌠11 ± 1. The large image separation allows us to study the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) of the lensed source unobscured by the central lensing mass. The far-IR/millimeter-wave SED is well described by a modified blackbody fit with an unusually warm dust temperature, 88 ± 3 K. We derive a lensing-corrected total IR luminosity of (1.43 ± 0.09) Ă 1013 Lâ, implying a star formation rate of âŒ2500 Mâ yr-1. However, models primarily developed from brighter galaxies selected at longer wavelengths are a poor fit to the full optical-to-millimeter SED. A number of other strongly lensed systems have already been discovered in early Herschel data, and many more are expected as additional data are collected.Peer reviewe
SEGREGATION IN THE AUSTRALIAN LABOUR MARKET *
An important measure of the success of immigration is the assimilation of immigrants into the labour force of the host country. This criterion is important from both the perspective of immigrants themselves and that of the host country. Conversely, concentration of migrants in a few sectors is undesirable because of its adverse socio-economic consequences. Since the pattern of distribution of migrant employment influences the structure and outcomes in the labour market in various ways, it attracts public, academic and policymakers' attention. The present paper employs various numerical measures to estimate the degree of immigrant segregation across occupations and industries in Australia. The results indicate that the occupational distribution of immigrants is very similar to the proportion of native workers employed in the various occupations. This similarity also characterises the industrial distribution of immigrant employment. Thus, contrary to popular perception and findings for the United States, evidence from the Australian labour market does not indicate the existence of widespread immigrant segregation.
