    Does the transgenic Cry1Ac toxin adversely affect the population dynamics of floral-visiting insects in soybean crop?

    One of the strategies of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)-soybean is the use of genetically modified plants. However, there are concerns about the unknown effects associated with this technology on nontarget organisms. The objective of this study was to determine the population dynamics of species of floral-visiting insects in Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and non-Bt soybean. In the experiment, two soybean treatments were assessed, one of soy DM 6563 Intacta and the other BMX Potência RR. Floral-visiting insects were collected in the flowering period every 15 min/h for 12 h/day, every 3 to 4 days. 549 floralvisiting insects (Class Insecta) were collected, comprising 8 orders, 30 families, and 92 species. Of these, 279 were present in the cultivar DM 6563 Intacta and 270 in the cultivar BMX Potência. The most abundant species were Apis mellifera (35.15%), Musca species 1 (10.01%), and Lagria villosa (5.28%). Species composition was similar for the two cultivars. The highest number of species visited the flowers of the cultivars between 8:00 and 11:00 am, while the lowest intensity of visitation occurred between 12:00 and 15:00 pm. After diversity was determined, it was observed that cultivar BMX Potência (non-Bt) had a higher diversity than cultivar DM 6563 Intacta (Bt).Keywords: Pollinators, species diversity, transgeni

    The Effect Of Dye-polymer Interactions On The Kinetics Of The Isomerization Of 4-dimethyl-aminoazobenzene And Mercury Dithizonate

    Thermal and photo-isomerization reactions of mercury dithizonate and 4-dimethyl-aminoazobenzene were studied in solutions and in polymer matrices. We used exponential functions to calculate the rate constants for both processes. The kinetic behavior was well described by monoexponential functions for these dyes dissolved in solvents, although bi-exponential functions are required when these dyes are dissolved in polymers. The rate constants are strongly influenced by dye/solvent and dye/polymer interactions, as well as by the aging processes of the polymer matrix. In general, the reaction is faster in more polar mediums, solvents or polymer matrices, since stabilization of different tautomers takes place. We also showed that larger molecules isomerize slowly and slower isomerization has also been observed for annealed samples.     An independent estimate of the triple-Pomeron coupling

    The value of the important triple-Pomeron coupling is estimated by an unorthodox procedure using the known diffractive parton distribution functions. The result is g_{3P}\simeq 0.2g_N, where g_N is the Pomeron-nucleon coupling. This is in excellent agreement with an independent determination, g_{3P}\simeq 0.2g_N, previously obtained by analysing the available data in the triple-Regge region with absorptive effects taken into account.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Nitric oxide released from luminal s-nitroso-n-acetylcysteine increases gastric mucosal blood flow

    Nitric oxide (NO)-mediated vasodilation plays a key role in gastric mucosal defense, and NO-donor drugs may protect against diseases associated with gastric mucosal blood flow (GMBF) deficiencies. In this study, we used the ex vivo gastric chamber method and Laser Doppler Flowmetry to characterize the effects of luminal aqueous NO-donor drug S-nitroso-N-acetylcysteine (SNAC) solution administration compared to aqueous NaNO2 and NaNO3 solutions (pH 7.4) on GMBF in Sprague-Dawley rats. SNAC solutions (600 μM and 12 mM) led to a rapid threefold increase in GMBF, which was maintained during the incubation of the solutions with the gastric mucosa, while NaNO2 or NaNO3 solutions (12 mM) did not affect GMBF. SNAC solutions (600 μM and 12 mM) spontaneously released NO at 37 °C at a constant rate of 0.3 or 14 nmol·mL-1·min-1, respectively, while NaNO2 (12 mM) released NO at a rate of 0.06 nmol·mL-1·min-1 and NaNO3 (12 mM) did not release NO. These results suggest that the SNAC-induced GMBF increase is due to their higher rates of spontaneous NO release compared to equimolar NaNO2 solutions.     Conservative Treatment Of The Dentigerous Cyst: Report Of Two Cases

    The purpose of this paper is to present two cases of dentigerous cyst associated to permanent teeth in children treated by conservative techniques. Dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental cysts of the jaws. Conservative treatment is very effective to this entity and aims at eliminating the cystic tissue and preserving the permanent tooth involved in the pathology. Two techniques are described as conservative treatment for these cysts, marsupialization and the decompression. Two children presented with dentigerous cysts. A female child was affected by a large lesion at the right side of the mandible associated to tooth 45. The other lesion arose at the left maxilla associated to tooth 21 of a male child. Each dentigerous cyst promoted severe tooth displacement.     Intracultural diversity in a model of social dynamics

    We study the consequences of introducing individual nonconformity in social interactions, based on Axelrod's model for the dissemination of culture. A constraint on the number of situations in which interaction may take place is introduced in order to lift the unavoidable ho mogeneity present in the final configurations arising in Axelrod's related models. The inclusion of this constraint leads to the occurrence of complex patterns of intracultural diversity whose statistical properties and spatial distribution are characterized by means of the concepts of cultural affinity and cultural cli ne. It is found that the relevant quantity that determines the properties of intracultural diversity is given by the fraction of cultural features that characterizes the cultural nonconformity of individuals.Comment: 7 pages, 2 tables, 6 figure

    Proposal for a Time-Dependent Dynamic Identification Algorithm for Structural Health Monitoring

    This paper describes the design, test and validation processes of a dynamicidentification algorithm aimed at the time-dependent assessment of modern structures and heritage buildings for civil and seismic engineering purposes. Full validation of the algorithm is performed through analysis of numerically simulated data from an idealized masonry tower. Making use of output-only vibration measurements, the non-parametric algorithm can generate dynamic features results as time-dependent functions for the complete observation period. The algorithm can work in the presence of different dynamic loads and non-linear structural behaviours, close spectral frequency components and noisecontaminated data. Time-dependent structural dynamic parameters that can be computed are modal frequencies, modal displacements, modal curvatures, and higher derivatives of mode shapes. The proposed algorithm aims to be used as the core estimator of timedependent identification methods devoted to the health monitoring of structures and infrastructures, being suitable for a multitude of tasks ranging from the simple operational modal analysis (in pre and post-event condition) to the complex online assessment of the structural response during seismic events for rapid damage identification
