Descripción del gran ecosistema marino del noreste de Brasil usando un modelo trófico
The objective of this study was to describe the marine ecosystem off northeastern Brazil. A trophic model was constructed for the 1970s using Ecopath with Ecosim. The impact of most of the forty-one functional groups was modest, probably due to the highly reticulated diet matrix. However, seagrass and macroalgae exerted a strong positive impact on manatee and herbivorous reef fishes, respectively. A high negative impact of omnivorous reef fishes on spiny lobsters and of sharks on swordfish was observed. Spiny lobsters and swordfish had the largest biomass changes for the simulation period (1978-2000); tunas, other large pelagics and sharks showed intermediate rates of biomass decline; and a slight increase in biomass was observed for toothed cetaceans, large carnivorous reef fishes, and dolphinfish. Recycling was an important feature of this ecosystem with low phytoplankton-originated primary production. The mean transfer efficiency between trophic levels was 11.4%. The gross efficiency of the fisheries was very low (0.00002), probably due to the low exploitation rate of most of the resources in the 1970s. Basic local information was missing for many groups. When information gaps are filled, this model may serve more credibly for the exploration of fishing policies for this area within an ecosystem approach.
Meridional Circulation and Global Solar Oscillations
We investigate the influence of large-scale meridional circulation on solar
p-modes by quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, as proposed by
\cite{lavely92}. As an input flow we use various models of stationary
meridional circulation obeying the continuity equation. This flow perturbs the
eigenmodes of an equilibrium model of the Sun. We derive the signatures of the
meridional circulation in the frequency multiplets of solar p-modes. In most
cases the meridional circulation leads to negative average frequency shifts of
the multiplets. Further possible observable effects are briefly discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submittted to Solar Physics Topical Issue

Renormalized quantum tomography
The core of quantum tomography is the possibility of writing a generally
unbounded complex operator in form of an expansion over operators that are
generally nonlinear functions of a generally continuous set of spectral
densities--the so-called "quorum" of observables. The expansion is generally
non unique, the non unicity allowing further optimization for given criteria.
The mathematical problem of tomography is thus the classification of all such
operator expansions for given (suitably closed) linear spaces of unbounded
operators--e.g. Banach spaces of operators with an appropriate norm. Such
problem is a difficult one, and remains still open, involving the theory of
general basis in Banach spaces, a still unfinished chapter of analysis. In this
paper we present new nontrivial operator expansions for the quorum of
quadratures of the harmonic oscillator, and introduce a first very preliminary
general framework to generate new expansions based on the Kolmogorov
construction. The material presented in this paper is intended to be helpful
for the solution of the general problem of quantum tomography in infinite
dimensions, which corresponds to provide a coherent mathematical framework for
operator expansions over functions of a continuous set of spectral densities.Comment: 23 pages, no figure
Gravitons in One-Loop Quantum Cosmology: Correspondence Between Covariant and Non-Covariant Formalisms
The discrepancy between the results of covariant and non-covariant one-loop
calculations for higher-spin fields in quantum cosmology is analyzed. A
detailed mode-by-mode study of perturbative quantum gravity about a flat
Euclidean background bounded by two concentric 3-spheres, including
non-physical degrees of freedom and ghost modes, leads to one-loop amplitudes
in agreement with the covariant Schwinger-DeWitt method. This calculation
provides the generalization of a previous analysis of fermionic fields and
electromagnetic fields at one-loop about flat Euclidean backgrounds admitting a
well-defined 3+1 decomposition.Comment: 29 pages, latex, recently appearing in Physical Review D, volume 50,

GAMBUT field experiment of peatland wildfires in Sumatra: from ignition to spread and suppression
Peat wildfires can burn over large areas of peatland, releasing ancient carbon and toxic gases into the atmosphere over prolonged periods. These emissions cause haze episodes of pollution and accelerate climate change. Peat wildfires are characterised by smouldering - the flameless, most persistent type of combustion. Mitigation strategies are needed in arctic, boreal, and tropical areas but are hindered by incomplete scientific understanding of smouldering. Here, we present GAMBUT, the largest and longest to-date field experiment of peat wildfires, conducted in a degraded peatland of Sumatra. Temperature, emission and spread of peat fire were continuously measured over 4-10 days and nights, and three major rainfalls. Measurements of temperature in the soil provide field experimental evidence of lethal fire severity to the biological system of the peat up to 30 cm depth. We report that the temperature of the deep smouldering is 13% hotter than shallow layer during daytime. During night-time, both deep and shallow smouldering had the same level of temperature. The experiment was terminated by suppression with water. Comparison of rainfall with suppression confirms the existence of a critical water column height below which extinction is not possible. GAMBUT provides a unique understanding of peat wildfires at field conditions that can contribute to mitigation strategies
Relativistic Gauge Conditions in Quantum Cosmology
This paper studies the quantization of the electromagnetic field on a flat
Euclidean background with boundaries. One-loop scaling factors are evaluated
for the one-boundary and two-boundary backgrounds. The mode-by-mode analysis of
Faddeev-Popov quantum amplitudes is performed by using zeta-function
regularization, and is compared with the space-time covariant evaluation of the
same amplitudes. It is shown that a particular gauge condition exists for which
the corresponding operator matrix acting on gauge modes is in diagonal form
from the beginning. Moreover, various relativistic gauge conditions are studied
in detail, to investigate the gauge invariance of the perturbative quantum
theory.Comment: 26 pages, plain TeX, no figure
Modeling magnetospheric fields in the Jupiter system
The various processes which generate magnetic fields within the Jupiter
system are exemplary for a large class of similar processes occurring at other
planets in the solar system, but also around extrasolar planets. Jupiter's
large internal dynamo magnetic field generates a gigantic magnetosphere, which
is strongly rotational driven and possesses large plasma sources located deeply
within the magnetosphere. The combination of the latter two effects is the
primary reason for Jupiter's main auroral ovals. Jupiter's moon Ganymede is the
only known moon with an intrinsic dynamo magnetic field, which generates a
mini-magnetosphere located within Jupiter's larger magnetosphere including two
auroral ovals. Ganymede's magnetosphere is qualitatively different compared to
the one from Jupiter. It possesses no bow shock but develops Alfv\'en wings
similar to most of the extrasolar planets which orbit their host stars within
0.1 AU. New numerical models of Jupiter's and Ganymede's magnetospheres
presented here provide quantitative insight into the processes that maintain
these magnetospheres. Jupiter's magnetospheric field is approximately
time-periodic at the locations of Jupiter's moons and induces secondary
magnetic fields in electrically conductive layers such as subsurface oceans. In
the case of Ganymede, these secondary magnetic fields influence the oscillation
of the location of its auroral ovals. Based on dedicated Hubble Space Telescope
observations, an analysis of the amplitudes of the auroral oscillations
provides evidence that Ganymede harbors a subsurface ocean. Callisto in
contrast does not possess a mini-magnetosphere, but still shows a perturbed
magnetic field environment. Callisto's ionosphere and atmospheric UV emission
is different compared to the other Galilean satellites as it is primarily been
generated by solar photons compared to magnetospheric electrons.Comment: Chapter for Book: Planetary Magnetis
Helioseismology of Sunspots: A Case Study of NOAA Region 9787
Various methods of helioseismology are used to study the subsurface
properties of the sunspot in NOAA Active Region 9787. This sunspot was chosen
because it is axisymmetric, shows little evolution during 20-28 January 2002,
and was observed continuously by the MDI/SOHO instrument. (...) Wave travel
times and mode frequencies are affected by the sunspot. In most cases, wave
packets that propagate through the sunspot have reduced travel times. At short
travel distances, however, the sign of the travel-time shifts appears to depend
sensitively on how the data are processed and, in particular, on filtering in
frequency-wavenumber space. We carry out two linear inversions for wave speed:
one using travel-times and phase-speed filters and the other one using mode
frequencies from ring analysis. These two inversions give subsurface wave-speed
profiles with opposite signs and different amplitudes. (...) From this study of
AR9787, we conclude that we are currently unable to provide a unified
description of the subsurface structure and dynamics of the sunspot.Comment: 28 pages, 18 figure
Symmetric Log-Domain Diffeomorphic Registration: A Demons-based Approach
pmid 18979814International audienceModern morphometric studies use non-linear image registration to compare anatomies and perform group analysis. Recently, log-Euclidean approaches have contributed to promote the use of such computational anatomy tools by permitting simple computations of statistics on a rather large class of invertible spatial transformations. In this work, we propose a non-linear registration algorithm perfectly fit for log-Euclidean statistics on diffeomorphisms. Our algorithm works completely in the log-domain, i.e. it uses a stationary velocity field. This implies that we guarantee the invertibility of the deformation and have access to the true inverse transformation. This also means that our output can be directly used for log-Euclidean statistics without relying on the heavy computation of the log of the spatial transformation. As it is often desirable, our algorithm is symmetric with respect to the order of the input images. Furthermore, we use an alternate optimization approach related to Thirion's demons algorithm to provide a fast non-linear registration algorithm. First results show that our algorithm outperforms both the demons algorithm and the recently proposed diffeomorphic demons algorithm in terms of accuracy of the transformation while remaining computationally efficient
Perspectives in Global Helioseismology, and the Road Ahead
We review the impact of global helioseismology on key questions concerning
the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun, and consider the exciting
challenges the field faces as it enters a fourth decade of science
exploitation. We do so with an eye on the past, looking at the perspectives
global helioseismology offered in its earlier phases, in particular the
mid-to-late 1970s and the 1980s. We look at how modern, higher-quality, longer
datasets coupled with new developments in analysis, have altered, refined, and
changed some of those perspectives, and opened others that were not previously
available for study. We finish by discussing outstanding challenges and
questions for the field.Comment: Invited review; to appear in Solar Physics (24 pages, 6 figures
