The Ginzburg regime and its effects on topological defect formation
The Ginzburg temperature has historically been proposed as the energy scale
of formation of topological defects at a second order symmetry breaking phase
transition. More recently alternative proposals which compute the time of
formation of defects from the critical dynamics of the system, have been
gaining both theoretical and experimental support. We investigate, using a
canonical model for string formation, how these two pictures compare. In
particular we show that prolonged exposure of a critical field configuration to
the Ginzburg regime results in no substantial suppression of the final density
of defects formed. These results dismiss the recently proposed role of the
Ginzburg regime in explaining the absence of topological defects in 4He

Modelling caregiving interactions during stress
Few studies describing caregiver stress and coping have focused on the effects of informal caregiving for depressed care recipients.The major purpose of this paper was to investigate the dynamics of the informal care support and receipt interactions among caregivers and care recipients using a computational modelling approach.Important concepts in coping skills, strong ties support networks and stress buffering studies were used as a basis for the model design and verification.Simulation experiments for several cases pointed out that the model is able to reproduce interaction among strong tie network members during stress.In addition, the possible equillibria of the model have been determined, and the model has been automatically verified against expected overall properties

Measuring Cosmic Defect Correlations in Liquid Crystals
From the theory of topological defect formation proposed for the early
universe, the so called Kibble mechanism, it follows that the density
correlation functions of defects and anti-defects in a given system should be
completely determined in terms of a single length scale , the relevant
domain size. Thus, when lengths are expressed in units of , these
distributions should show universal behavior, depending only on the symmetry of
the order parameter, and space dimensions. We have verified this prediction by
analyzing the distributions of defects/anti-defects formed in the
isotropic-nematic phase transition in a thin layer of nematic liquid crystals.
Our experimental results confirm this prediction and are in reasonable

New games, new rules: big data and the changing context of strategy
Big data and the mechanisms by which it is produced and disseminated introduce important changes in the ways information is generated and made relevant for organizations. Big data often represents miscellaneous records of the whereabouts of large and shifting online crowds. It is frequently agnostic, in the sense of being produced for generic purposes or purposes different from those sought by big data crunching. It is based on varying formats and modes of communication (e.g., texts, image and sound), raising severe problems of semiotic translation and meaning compatibility. Crucially, the usefulness of big data rests on their steady updatability, a condition that reduces the time span within which this data is useful or relevant. Jointly, these attributes challenge established rules of strategy making as these are manifested in the canons of procuring structured information of lasting value that addresses specific and long-term organizational objectives. The developments underlying big data thus seem to carry important implications for strategy making, and the data and information practices with which strategy has been associated. We conclude by placing the understanding of these changes within the wider social and institutional context of longstanding data practices and the significance they carry for management and organizations
Determinants of exercise-induced oxygen desaturation including pulmonary emphysema in COPD: Results from the ECLIPSE study
Exercise-induced oxygen desaturation (EID) is related to mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We investigated: (1) the prevalence of EID; (2) the relative-weight of several physiological determinants of EID including pulmonary emphysema, and (3) the relationship of EID with certain patients' clinical characteristics. Data from 2050 COPD patients (age: 63.3 ± 7.1years; FEV1: 48.7 ± 15.7%pred.) were analyzed. The occurrence of EID (SpO2post ≤88%) at the six-minute walking test (6MWT) was investigated in association with emphysema quantified by computed-tomography (QCT), and several clinical characteristics. 435 patients (21%) exhibited EID. Subjects with EID had more QCT-emphysema, lower exercise capacity and worse health-status (BODE, ADO indexes) compared to non-EID. Determinant of EID were obesity (BMI≥30 kg/m2), impaired FEV1 (≤44%pred.), moderate or worse emphysema, and low SpO2 at rest (≤93%). Linear regression indicated that each 1-point increase on the ADO-score independently elevates odds ratio (≤1.5fold) for EID.About one in five COPD patients in the ECLIPSE cohort present EID. Advanced emphysema is associated with EID. In addition, obesity, severe airflow limitation, and low resting oxygen saturation increase the risk for EID. Patients with EID in GOLD stage II have higher odds to have moderate or worse emphysema compared those with EID in GOLD stage III-IV. Search for Spontaneous Nucleation of Magnetic Flux During Rapid Cooling of YBCO films Through Tc
We describe an experimental search for spontaneous formation of flux lines
during a rapid quench of thin YBaCuO films through Tc. This effect is expected
according to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism of a creation of topological defects of
the order parameter during a symmetry breaking phase transition. Spontaneously
formed vortices were previously observed in superfluid 3He, while a similar
experiment in superfluid 4He gave negative results. Using a high Tc SQUID, we
measured both the magnetic flux in the sample during a quench with a
sensitivity of 20 phi-0/cm^2, and the field noise which one would expect from
flux lines pinned in the film. The sensitivity was sufficient to detect
spontaneous flux at a level corresponding to 10^(-3) of the prediction. Within
our resolution, we saw no evidence for this effect.Comment: Manuscript and 4 figure
Morphological identification of animal hairs: Myths and misconceptions, possibilities and pitfalls
The examination of hair collected from crime scenes is an important and highly informative discipline relevant to many forensic investigations. However, the forensic identification of animal (non-human) hairs requires different skill sets and competencies to those required for human hair comparisons. The aim of this is paper is not only to highlight the intrinsic differences between forensic human hair comparison and forensic animal hair identification, but also discuss the utility and reliability of the two in the context of possibilities and pitfalls. It also addresses and dispels some of the more popular myths and misconceptions surrounding the microscopical examination of animal hairs. Furthermore, future directions of this discipline are explored through the proposal of recommendations for minimum standards for the morphological identification of animal hairs and the significance of the newly developed guidelines by SWGWILD is discussed
One-year change in health status and subsequent outcomes in COPD
BACKGROUND: Poor health status has been associated with morbidity and mortality in patients with COPD. To date, the impact of changes in health status on these outcomes remains unknown. AIMS: To explore the relationship of clinically relevant changes in health status with exacerbation, hospitalisation or death in patients with COPD. METHODS: Characteristics and health status (St George's Respiratory Questionnaire, SGRQ) were assessed over a period of 3 years in 2138 patients with COPD enrolled in the Evaluation of COPD Longitudinally to Identify Predictive Surrogate Endpoints (ECLIPSE) study: a longitudinal, prospective, observational study. Associations between change in health status (=4 units in SGRQ score) during year 1 and time to first exacerbation, hospitalisation and death during 2-year follow-up were assessed using Kaplan-Meier plots and log-rank test. RESULTS: 1832 (85.7%) patients (age 63.4±7.0 years, 65.4% male, FEV1 48.7±15.6% predicted) underwent assessment at baseline and 1 year. Compared with those who deteriorated, patients with improved or stable health status in year 1 have a lower likelihood of exacerbation (HR 0.78 (95% CI 0.67 to 0.89), p<0.001 and 0.84 (0.73 to 0.97), p=0.016, respectively), hospitalisation (0.72 (0.58 to 0.90), p=0.004 and 0.77 (0.62 to 0.96), p=0.023, respectively) or dying (0.61 (0.39 to 0.95), p=0.027 and 0.58 (0.37 to 0.92), p=0.019, respectively) during 2-year follow-up. This effect persisted after stratification for age and the number of exacerbations and hospitalisations during the first year of the study. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with stable or improved health status during year 1 of ECLIPSE had a lower likelihood of exacerbation, hospitalisation or dying during 2-year follow-up. Interventions that stabilise and improve health status may also improve outcomes in patients with COPD
