Dynamics of tournaments: the soccer case
A random walk-like model is considered to discuss statistical aspects of
tournaments. The model is applied to soccer leagues with emphasis on the
scores. This competitive system was computationally simulated and the results
are compared with empirical data from the English, the German and the Spanish
leagues and showed a good agreement with them. The present approach enabled us
to characterize a diffusion where the scores are not normally distributed,
having a short and asymmetric tail extending towards more positive values. We
argue that this non-Gaussian behavior is related with the difference between
the teams and with the asymmetry of the scores system. In addition, we compared
two tournament systems: the all-play-all and the elimination tournaments.Comment: To appear in EPJ
Absorbing-state phase transitions in fixed-energy sandpiles
We study sandpile models as closed systems, with conserved energy density
playing the role of an external parameter. The critical energy density,
, marks a nonequilibrium phase transition between active and absorbing
states. Several fixed-energy sandpiles are studied in extensive simulations of
stationary and transient properties, as well as the dynamics of roughening in
an interface-height representation. Our primary goal is to identify the
universality classes of such models, in hopes of assessing the validity of two
recently proposed approaches to sandpiles: a phenomenological continuum
Langevin description with absorbing states, and a mapping to driven interface
dynamics in random media. Our results strongly suggest that there are at least
three distinct universality classes for sandpiles.Comment: 41 pages, 23 figure
Exploring interactions of plant microbiomes
A plethora of microbial cells is present in every gram of soil, and microbes are found extensively in plant and animal tissues. The mechanisms governed by microorganisms in the regulation of physiological processes of their hosts have been extensively studied in the light of recent findings on microbiomes. In plants, the components of these microbiomes may form distinct communities, such as those inhabiting the plant rhizosphere, the endosphere and the phyllosphere. In each of these niches, the "microbial tissue" is established by, and responds to, specific selective pressures. Although there is no clear picture of the overall role of the plant microbiome, there is substantial evidence that these communities are involved in disease control, enhance nutrient acquisition, and affect stress tolerance. In this review, we first summarize features of microbial communities that compose the plant microbiome and further present a series of studies describing the underpinning factors that shape the phylogenetic and functional plant-associated communities. We advocate the idea that understanding the mechanisms by which plants select and interact with their microbiomes may have a direct effect on plant development and health, and further lead to the establishment of novel microbiome-driven strategies, that can cope with the development of a more sustainable agriculture
A novel enzymatically-mediated drug delivery carrier for bone tissue engineering applications: combining biodegradable starch-based microparticles and differentiation agents
In many biomedical applications, the performance
of biomaterials depends largely on their degradation
behavior. For instance, in drug delivery applications, the
polymeric carrier should degrade under physiological
conditions slowly releasing the encapsulated drug. The aim
of this work was, therefore, to develop an enzymaticmediated
degradation carrier system for the delivery of
differentiation agents to be used in bone tissue engineering
applications. For that, a polymeric blend of starch with
polycaprolactone (SPCL) was used to produce a microparticle
carrier for the controlled release of dexamethasone
(DEX). In order to investigate the effect of enzymes on the
degradation behavior of the developed system and release
profile of the encapsulated osteogenic agent (DEX), the
microparticles were incubated in phosphate buffer solution
in the presence of a-amylase and/or lipase enzymes (at
physiological concentrations), at 37 C for different periods
of time. The degradation was followed by gravimetric
measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and
Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the
release of DEX was monitored by high performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC). The developed microparticles
were shown to be susceptible to enzymatic degradation, as observed by an increase in weight loss and porosity with
degradation time when compared with control samples
(incubation in buffer only). For longer degradation times,
the diameter of the microparticles decreased significantly
and a highly porous matrix was obtained. The in vitro
release studies showed a sustained release pattern with
48% of the encapsulated drug being released for a period of
30 days. As the degradation proceeds, it is expected that
the remaining encapsulated drug will be completely
released as a consequence of an increasingly permeable
matrix and faster diffusion of the drug. Cytocompatibility
results indicated the possibility of the developed microparticles
to be used as biomaterial due to their reduced
cytotoxic effects
Impact of a Tutored Theoretical-Practical Training to Develop Undergraduate Studentsâ Skills for the Detection of Caries Lesions: Study Protocol for a Multicenter Controlled Randomized Study
Background: Tutored laboratorial activities could be a manner of improving the competency development of students. However, its impact over conventional theoretical classes has not yet been tested. Additionally, different university contexts could influence this issue and should be explored.
Objective: To assess the impact of a tutored theoretical-practical training for teaching undergraduate students to detect caries lesions as compared with theoretical teaching activities. The impact of these teaching/learning activities will be assessed in terms of efficacy, cost/benefit, retention of knowledge/acquired competences, and student acceptability.
Methods: Sixteen centers (7 centers from Brazil and 9 centers from other countries throughout the world) are involved in the inclusion of subjects for this protocol. A randomized controlled study with parallel groups will be conducted. One group (control) will be exposed to a 60- to 90-minute conventional theoretical class and the other group (test) will be exposed to the same theoretical class and also a 90-minute laboratory class, including exercises and discussions based on the evaluation of a pool of images and extracted teeth. The mentioned outcomes will be evaluated immediately after the teaching activities and also in medium- and long-term analyses. To compare the long-term outcomes, students who enrolled in the university before the participating students will be interviewed for data collection and these data will be used as a control and compared with the trained group. This stage will be a nonrandomized phase of this study, nested in the main study. Appropriate statistical analysis will be performed according to the aims of this study. Variables related to the centers will also be analyzed and used to model adjustment as possible sources of variability among results.
Results: This ongoing study is funded by a Brazilian national funding agency (CNPq- 400736/2014-4). We expect that the tutored theoretical-practical training will improve the undergraduate studentsâ performance in the detection of caries lesions and subsequent treatment decisions, mainly in terms of long-term retention of knowledge. Our hypothesis is that tutored theoretical-practical training is a more cost-effective option for teaching undergraduate students to detect caries lesions.
Conclusions: If our hypothesis is confirmed, the use of laboratory training in conjunction with theoretical classes could be used as an educational strategy in Cariology to improve the development of undergraduate studentsâ skills in the detection of caries lesions and clinical decision-making
