    Characterisation of aluminium black dross before and after stepwise salt-phase dissolution in non-aqueous solvents

    Aqueous leaching to recover salts from black dross is accompanied by hazardous gas generation. The gas-generating phases vary significantly across differently sourced black dross. The challenge for the industry is how to accurately qualify and quantify the problematic components of black dross, especially minor reactive phases. This paper employed XRF, EDX, XRD, Raman and FTIR to analyse two industrial black dross samples from various sources. A novel pre-treatment method before characterisation was devised using water-free glycerol and anhydrous ethanol to remove the major salt components, without reacting the gas-generating phases. The results show that around 80 % of the salts existent in the black dross had been removed successfully through pre-treatment. This method facilitated the determination of minor reactive phases characterised by XRD, XRF and EDX, and had little effect on the characterisation by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The ammonia-generating nitride phase was detected by XRD, Raman and FTIR. The FTIR, moreover, allowed the successful identification of carbide. Best practice guidelines for the industrial analysis of black dross has been proposed. The guidelines would provide industry with evidence to include or adjust gas treatment methods and operational parameters when dealing with compositional variability in industrially-sourced black dross

    Quantum singularities in a model of f(R) Gravity

    The formation of a naked singularity in a model of f(R) gravity having as source a linear electromagnetic field is considered in view of quantum mechanics. Quantum test fields obeying the Klein-Gordon, Dirac and Maxwell equations are used to probe the classical timelike naked singularity developed at r=0. We prove that the spatial derivative operator of the fields fails to be essentially self-adjoint. As a result, the classical timelike naked singularity remains quantum mechanically singular when it is probed with quantum fields having different spin structures.Comment: 12 pages, final version.     Electron transport in nanotube--molecular wire hybrids

    We study contact effects on electron transport across a molecular wire sandwiched between two semi-infinite (carbon) nanotube leads as a model for nanoelectrodes. Employing the Landauer scattering matrix approach we find that the conductance is very sensitive to parameters such as the coupling strength and geometry of the contact. The conductance exhibits markedly different behavior in the two limiting scenarios of single contact and multiple contacts between the molecular wire and the nanotube interfacial atoms. In contrast to a single contact the multiple-contact configuration acts as a filter selecting single transport channels. It exhibits a scaling law for the conductance as a function of coupling strength and tube diameter. We also observe an unusual narrow-to-broad-to-narrow behavior of conductance resonances upon decreasing the coupling.Comment: 4 pages, figures include

    The results of recent studies suggest that the mouse Sac (saccharin preference) locus is identical to the Tas1r3 (taste receptor) gene. The goal of this study was to identify Tas1r3 sequence variants associated with saccharin preference in a large number of inbred mouse strains. Initially, we sequenced approximately 6.7 kb of the Tas1r3 gene and its flanking regions from six inbred mouse strains with high and low saccharin preference, including the strains in which the Sac alleles were described originally (C57BL/6J, Sac(b); DBA/2J, Sac(d)). Of the 89 sequence variants detected among these six strains, eight polymorphic sites were significantly associated with preferences for 1.6 mm saccharin. Next, each of these eight variant sites were genotyped in 24 additional mouse strains. Analysis of the genotype-phenotype associations in all 30 strains showed the strongest association with saccharin preference at three sites: nucleotide (nt) -791 (3 bp insertion/deletion), nt +135 (Ser45Ser), and nt +179 (Ile60Thr). We measured Tas1r3 gene expression, transcript size, and T1R3 immunoreactivity in the taste tissue of two inbred mouse strains with different Tas1r3 haplotypes and saccharin preferences. The results of these experiments suggest that the polymorphisms associated with saccharin preference do not act by blocking gene expression, changing alternative splicing, or interfering with protein translation in taste tissue. The amino acid substitution (Ile60Thr) may influence the ability of the protein to form dimers or bind sweeteners. Here, we present data for future studies directed to experimentally confirm the function of these polymorphisms and highlight some of the difficulties of identifying specific DNA sequence variants that underlie quantitative trait loci
