White working-class disunity: the Southern Rhodesian Labour Party
A journal article on the disunity within the Labour Party of Southern Rhodesia.in the literature currently available on the Southern Rhodesia Labour Party (S.R.L.P.) and cognate trades and political organisations operating during the Second World War, the theme of white working-class disunity has received less scrutiny than the more spectacular theme of conflicting attitudes towards race, as epitomised in the controversy surrounding the African Branch of the S.R.L.P. Whilst that issue was the overt and immediate cause of the disintegration of the party before the 1946 general election, it also served as a convenient pretext for fission, thereby obscuring a long history of rancour and discord due to personality differences, party organisation and policy considerations, which was of equal significance. Doris Lessing deftly summarised the motives underlying the manipulation of the African Branch as a politically emotive issue in her partisan but perceptive interpretation of H. H. Davies’s behaviour at the abortive reunion conference at Gwelo in 1945: ‘The issue that was fought out on the surface was the question of the colour bar. Global modelling of H2 mixing ratios and isotopic compositions with the TM5 model
The isotopic composition of molecular hydrogen (H2) contains independent information for constraining the global H2 budget. To explore this, we have implemented hydrogen sources and sinks, including their isotopic composition, into the global chemistry transport model TM5. For the first time, a global model now includes a simplified but explicit isotope reaction scheme for the photochemical production of H2. We present a comparison of modelled results for the H2 mixing ratio and isotope composition with available measurements on the seasonal to inter annual time scales for the years 2001–2007. The base model results agree well with observations for H2 mixing ratios. For dD[H2], modelled values are slightly lower than measurements. A detailed sensitivity study is performed to identify the most important parameters for modelling the isotopic composition of H2. The results show that on the global scale, the discrepancy between model and measurements can be closed by adjusting the default values of the isotope effects in deposition, photochemistry and the stratosphere-troposphere exchange within the known range of uncertainty. However, the available isotope data do not provide sufficient information to uniquely constrain the global isotope budget. Therefore, additional studies focussing on the isotopic composition near the tropopause and on the isotope effects in the photochemistry and deposition are recommended
Deconstructing 1S0 nucleon-nucleon scattering
A distorted-wave method is used to analyse nucleon-nucleon scattering in the
1S0 channel. Effects of one-pion exchange are removed from the empirical phase
shift to all orders by using a modified effective-range expansion. Two-pion
exchange is then subtracted in the distorted-wave Born approximation, with
matrix elements taken between scattering waves for the one-pion exchange
potential. The residual short-range interaction shows a very rapid energy
dependence for kinetic energies above about 100 MeV, suggesting that the
breakdown scale of the corresponding effective theory is only 270MeV. This may
signal the need to include the Delta resonance as an explicit degree of freedom
in order to describe scattering at these energies. An alternative strategy of
keeping the cutoff finite to reduce large, but finite, contributions from the

Isolation and preliminary characterization of a caprine rotavirus
Five cytopathic rotavirus strains were isolated in MA 104 cells from stool specimens of kids with diarrhoea.
Pre-treatment of the virus with trypsin and incorporation of low levels of trypsin in the maintenance
medium were important for the successful cultivation of the strains in these cells. The isolates
were shown to be group A rotaviruses by antigenic reactivity with a group A monoclonal antibody.
This was confirmed by the migration patterns of the viral RNA genome during polyacrylamide gel
electrophoresis, which also confirmed that all five strains had an identical RNA electropherotype.
Analysis with monoclonal antibodies to the subgroup-specific VP6 antigen showed that these strains

Thin-Film Metamaterials called Sculptured Thin Films
Morphology and performance are conjointed attributes of metamaterials, of
which sculptured thin films (STFs) are examples. STFs are assemblies of
nanowires that can be fabricated from many different materials, typically via
physical vapor deposition onto rotating substrates. The curvilinear--nanowire
morphology of STFs is determined by the substrate motions during fabrication.
The optical properties, especially, can be tailored by varying the morphology
of STFs. In many cases prototype devices have been fabricated for various

A renormalisation group approach to two-body scattering in the presence of long-range forces
We apply renormalisation-group methods to two-body scattering by a
combination of known long-range and unknown short-range potentials. We impose a
cut-off in the basis of distorted waves of the long-range potential and
identify possible fixed points of the short-range potential as this cut-off is
lowered to zero. The expansions around these fixed points define the power
countings for the corresponding effective field theories. Expansions around
nontrivial fixed points are shown to correspond to distorted-wave versions of
the effective-range expansion. These methods are applied to scattering in the
presence of Coulomb, Yukawa and repulsive inverse-square potentials.Comment: 22 pages (RevTeX), 4 figure

Removal of 2-butoxyethanol gaseous emissions by biotrickling filtration packed with polyurethane foam
The removal of 2-butoxyethanol from gaseous emissions was studied using two biotrickling filters (BTF1 and BTF2) packed with polyurethane foam. Two different inoculum sources were used: a pure culture of Pseudomonas sp. BOE200 (BTF1) and activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (BTF2). The bioreactors were operated at inlet loads (ILs) of 130 and 195 g m−3 hour−1 and at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 12.5 s. Under an IL of ∼130 g m−3 hour−1, BTF1 presented higher elimination capacities (ECs) than BTF2, with average values of 106 ± 7 and 68 ± 8 g m−3 hour−1, respectively. However, differences in ECs between BTFs were decreased by reducing the irrigation intervals from 1 min every 12 min to 1 min every 2 hours in BTF2. Average values of EC were 111 ± 25 and 90 ± 7 g m−3 hour−1 for BTF1 and BTF2, respectively, when working at an IL of ∼195 g m−3 hour−1. Microbial analysis revealed a significant shift in the microbial community of BTF1 inoculated with Pseudomonas sp. BOE200. At the end of the experiment, the species Microbacterium sp., Chryseobacterium sp., Acinetobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Mycobacterium sp. were detected. In BTF2 inoculated with activated sludge, the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) technique showed a diverse microbial community including species that was able to use 2-butoxyethanol as its carbon source, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas putida as representative species. Although BTF1 inoculated with Pseudomonas sp. BOE200 and higher gas velocity (probably greater gas/liquid mass transfer rate) showed a slight improvement in performance, the use of activated sludge as inoculum seems to be a more feasible option for the industrial application of this technology
Search for heavy neutrinos mixing with tau neutrinos
We report on a search for heavy neutrinos (\nus) produced in the decay
D_s\to \tau \nus at the SPS proton target followed by the decay \nudecay in
the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if \nus is a component
of .\
From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with
protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with
background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the
mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the \nus
mass range from 10 to 190 . Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future
experimental searches. The results obtained are used to constrain an

On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes
The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by
grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is
known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic
Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping
of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then,
sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is
linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio,
IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino
production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as
briefly reviewed in this paper.
The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is
illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino
detector during the year 2000. No significant excess for any of the suggested
